NOTE: This is just a "quick and dirty" message to a reader. I've since written a full tutorial that goes into much more detail. Check out "Contemporary Earrings and Shape Templates" on my website here: learn.thebluebottletree.com/c...
Super glue and E6000 are not good glues for attaching earring backs to polymer clay earrings because they pop off after a couple of years. A much better way is to embed the post into the polymer clay. Here is how that's done.
This was just a "quick and dirty" demo to answer a question on a FB group. If I were doing this for real, I'd spread the liquid clay better, and I'd blend and texture the "patch" of clay to make things neat before baking.
BTW, for more no-nonsense polymer clay information, you have to visit www.thebluebottletree.com. See you there!

Are all earring posts okay to go in the oven? I just use generic earring posts from the craft store.

So cool! Thanks for the tip. Does this affect people with sensitive ears? If I’m baking in a sterling silver backing I’m wondering if that would irritate a persons ears if it’s coming in contact with the clay?
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 4 года назад
Polymer clay is vinyl and does not generally cause skin sensitivity. Do be aware, however, that Sterling silver findings will not be wearable by many people who have sensitive ears. For many people only titanium or niobium can be worn.

Thank you! I'm new to earring making. Was that liquid clay you mentioned? And would that need to dry before putting on the thin layer over it? Also, can all earring backs be baked?
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 4 года назад
I mentioned Bake & Bond, which is a thick variety of liquid clay, but any brand would work, yes. Liquid clay doesn't dry, it must be baked to cure. Just put the layer over it and bake. Yes, all metal earring backs can be baked. I do have a tutorial that covers this in detail. Check it out here: learn.thebluebottletree.com/courses/polymer-clay-earrings/

is it ok to bake the stud open like that right away? Or we have to cover it? Since maybe gonna bake few earrings and isn't that bit dangerous for a metal to be bake in the oven?
@Miffny
@Miffny 4 года назад
Please how long should I bake the stud backs for on cured clay ? As I don't add backs until I sell my pieces. Thank you so much.

Wondering the same, because to take photos or cover with resin need plain studs in first bake!

Helloo! Im a really newbie on this! Where did you buy those cutters o did you make them?
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 4 года назад
They are called Kemper Kutters and they are available in many online craft shops. A Google search should find a source.

Do I have to use Bake and Bond? Could I use Gorilla Glue or other super glue?
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 4 года назад
It has to be a glue that will withstand the heat of baking. Those glues do not.

How do we proceed on an earring that’s already baked?
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 4 года назад
The same way. You can bake polymer clay again and again. For more details, check out the tutorial linked in the description.

Can i place the earring back on raw clay, press it down and add a little layer on top of it (basically without any glue) and then bake? also when i set it to bake, the earring will be face down and the metal part will be facing up, am i right?
@suziel5481
@suziel5481 4 года назад
Try it without the liquid clay? I'm going to try without and see if the earring back stays still before I pay for liquid clay :)

can you bake the clay without putting liquid clay? (since its not available in my country)
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 4 года назад
Sure, just make sure to press the clay down well so it doesn't peel apart after baking.

Thanks for that great tip. But, what about one on clip - on and screw - on backs? Not everyone can or wants to wear pierced earrings.
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 5 лет назад
You would use the same basic process. Cover the attachment with a small patch of polymer clay and then bake again. In the case of clip-on, you'll likely want to remove the little plastic comfort pad from the "flipper", if possible, and replace it after baking.

Has anyone ever had a reaction to the clay on their skin ? . I prefer embedding as it looks more finished but someone said that being so close to skin it may react. Please have you ever heard of clay reactions ?. Thank you. X
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 3 года назад
Polymer clay is vinyl. It does not typically cause a skin reaction. Far more important is the metal that you use for the posts.

You guys lucky see I can't use thumb takes cause like I have sensitive ears they need of be nickel free........ Me goes search for nickel free thumbtack
@thebluebottletree
@thebluebottletree 4 года назад
I always use post backs that don't irritate sensitive ears.. I have extremely sensitive ears, too. Look for post backs made from titanium or niobium. They are readily available if you look for them.
