Aloha - in 2013, the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laʻie, Hawaiʻi, celebrated its golden jubilee. Former performers gathered for two incredible presentations of the famous Evening Show. This performance features dancers from the 1960ʻs up to 1980ʻs. Enjoy seeing your friends and family in this historic production! TV production services were provided by students from BYU-Hawaii.

So grateful to have been part of the Polynesia Cultural Center from 1968-1983. Fell in love with everyone but especially my husband Richard Peters, seeing him hula, and oh! with his tenor voice, I’m in love forever.

My father was put on a banana boat age 9 in or about 1909, to come here to try and live as a white man. He grew up in the Waikato of NZ, never leaving these shores dying in his adopted country when we were very young. I grew up not knowing his mums native tong, only the few silent photos that I have hanging on our family home walls trying to tell me the stories of his place as a child in Savaii Western Samoa. Watching these Pacific singers and dances have brought more then a tear to my eyes, knowing now as a older person almost as old as the first Samoan dancers that there was so much that I have missed living in my mothers native lands. Thank you I have loved all that I have watched today.

ABSOLUTELY A-FREAK-ING-MAZ-ING! I had my 70th bd exactly a week ago and am an American male that has loved multi-ethnicities all of my life. Its New Year's Day 2022 at 7am and I somehow awakened to this and watched it mesmerized from beginning to end. What a wake up! As a native Afro-American, I'm always surprised to learn how Africa covers the globe and is infused into every land and culture, often directly, but definitely indirectly. My attention was first caught by the female lip/chin tats in a tv series (I forget) some years ago. There it was an American Indian (I think) tribe. I knew that men warriors had facial tats since I was a boy collecting boxed cereal figurines from cultures all over the world. I didn't know then that it was Māori and never knew until 30 years later. I was an NSA Buddhist, and we performed our annual global culture show in Hawaii during the mid 80s. Those olive hued Asian women, the vivid colors, bright smiles with an accessible welcoming demeanor and strong movements! I kinda had a warrior spirit so I connect with the warrior guys. As I watched this vid, memories and epiphanies flowed regarding the diversity of cultures around the globe, and yet the commonality of behaviors and the reasons behind them are connected. As traditions wane, I now can see deeper its intrinsic value on nurturing the young, maintaining family bonds of trust and expectations and community friendships necessary for survival and enhancing standards of living, ie, tech advances in medicine creating a covid vaccine so people can live, and the legacies left for future generations. For example. an American Indian reservation fairly escaped the epidemic while surrounding communities suffered greatly, and this was before the distribution of the vaccines. Somewhat isolated, their traditions move forward, and protecting and developing their chosen path. WOW! Old people getting on their last hurray! More than the best performers, it was about communal participation. I forgot what that was like, especially with covid culture the globe over. I'm sharing this vid and what I got out of it with some of my senior friends. We too need a last hurrah. I share this because you never know how far reaching and deep an impact one can have on another. Again, I participated in that kind of venue annually, and watching this unleashed how much I miss. The community is everybody. E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y! It takes the village. And everybody has a part and stake in it. Urban American community has migrated, and what's left is an influx of diverse, separate, motley group of (individuals), only meeting at planned events or electronically. Kids and young adults are glued to phones even at special dinners! Meaning, that their preferences and values lie (outside) of the family and community. And yet, they are incensed by cultural appropriation and cosplay. Yet, it's strange (to me) that Ireland and Germany continue the Afro-American creation of the Motown tradition that American black youth do not! Latin/Hispanic young adults have identified so thoroughly with Motown music that they changed LP album covers to Chulo visual art culture! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I am proud and take zero offense. But it's sad that Afro-American youth have distanced themselves from such a positive music experience and let thug rap dominate. So, I'm not listening to cultural appropriation when any sincere group takes the baton and runs with it. I had to tell my great-nieces to put away their phones and talk to me attentively while the dozen of us are out at a Christmas dinner- that I paid for. I have the clout to do that but was annoyed that I had to say it- with their mother present. All that and a lot more has inspired me to do something about my family and community dynamics. Where we grew up only houses apart, we're now spread across the nation from coast-to-coast, literally. But we do have a venue in place that can make it happen, and with university and tech support. Thank You Thank You Thank You! ...from the depths of my heart for capturing and sharing your event. I'll forever be grateful to you. One of my nieces is making her first visit to Honolulu next month. It'll be interesting to learn of her experience. May God continue you in Grace and Mercy in the now, and the hereafter. Love you. PEACE.

Sir, Mahalo nui loa. Your comments run deep. Also in Asian countries old school R & B and Gospel music are kept alive by young ASIANS. While most black children seem to loathe the rich amazing heritage their ancestors have brought to the global stage.

@@Harlowerayne yes, you are on point. Although most young blacks into hip hop and gangsta rap, there are some whose parents played R&B and gospel all day that have been immersed into the sound and culture. Yes, I know of Asian, (especially Japanese and Korean, China is catching up) R&B and gospel enthusiasts. Also German, Irish, French, Ghanaian, Nigerian and some others have continued the Afro-American R&B and gospel traditions in song, dance, and it does my heart good. They also exhibit the etiquette that we had (love of life, people, civil tongue, well dressed/no sag, couples dancing- the while tradition. Please continue to uplift one another, respect the elders, maintain high tactile relating, appreciate gender qualities, and perform community cultural shows/events with audience participation. Spread the joy near and far. Such beauty should never be forgotten. I leave you with this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bJz-F5sVsVo.html Janice is not Asian but American Indian. What do you think of Hazel on the koto? Today, Some would demean them for cultural appropriation. Here, m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8Z1CjyJQI1E.html people hate Suzi because of her demonstration of makeup. She's GLAMMED everybody, always without evil intentions. She def does cosplaying, but "blackface/blackfishing" nor cultural appropriation were intended. So many people misunderstand her. My point is that everybody, you and I included, borrow from each other's culture and have done it for a long time, consciously or unconsciously, especially as internet and affordable travel takes us abroad to new ventures. Please continue the spirit of R&B and gospel. Love what's good, and eschew every evil. Enjoy the blessings of God all the days of your life. Now I will take my leave.
