At 18:32, “Te Nangkoto” is a Kiribati (Micronesia) word that means “The” (Te) “Cloud” (Nang) “Pointer” (Koto). While traditional navigation methods may have been lost in other Pacific island nations, almost every island in Kiribati still have traditional navigators whose knowledge is family owned and a highly guarded skill. They never share it with others even in their own islands. They only pass their skill and knowledge to their son or grandson who will then possess almost all that there is to know. At the time the old navigator passed away, this son or grandson will be deemed worthy of the title of “Te Tia Borau (The Master Navigator)”.

If you go back even before the discovery of the pacific earlier it was the northern settlers which was 80% of Asian and 20% South American who are now name as micronesians by european that settle in the pacific way before the africans and polynesians. Micronesians were the best navigators and skilled magicians some early historians says that Micronesians ancestors were half spirits

What type if tree(s) were preferred for the main hulls of the ocean going boats? Did it depend on which island or was it one tree fits all?

The hibiscus Tiliaceus is used for making oars and also as wood for the floor. For masts, Hutu Barringtonia is used. For certain construction when the tree does not lend itself to it too much, in this case, the keel is composite. She is cut from Tournefortia argentea tahinu, Alphitonia toi and Nauclea forsteriana mara. They also use breadfruit wood for the shell.

@@Sariel555 thank you. Very helpful. What about the main hulls of the large ocean going boats? Or did they differ from island group to island group?
@Sariel555
@Sariel555 Год назад
@@pinkharrier47 Certainly it was different from one group to another, where they were, the mountainous islands or the atolls. Wood species should vary as well.

if my voyage is unknown I’d rather sail upwind. Easier to return or fall off to a new course..

32:13 that is Mau Pilaug the navigator from Micronesia, not Nainoa Thompson lol. Alot of false info in this video.

When you say one word from one island you are only going off what that island knows..you add in all the other words from each islands.

Technically I see most kiribati chart that make more sense. You should aldo acknowledge the kiribati navigation traditional knowledge. The clouds, the mwaneaba, the cloud formation like word nangkoto, zenith or taubuki, nao makoro are all kiribati terms. There is no real polynesia navigation in ur presentation its all hearsay for the polynesia.

This haole man is at least being honest and presenting facts without opinion. And his presentation supports what we know about our people. Instead of conflicting what we know is true like many others have done
