I have said for a while now that music is a different thing than slapping together some "difficult techniques". Polyphia doesn't make music by any classical understanding of the term. They make difficult to reproduce noise. Just because it's hard, doesn't mean it's good. I have also seen Tim talk about "the greatest guitarist in the world" when describing himself. As a goal, it's fine, as a self-identification, it's unearned hubris.

I agree 100% with the Polyphia take. Been playing for 35 years, and couldn't even dream of doing what they do technically. But then you realize they throw every gymnastic guitar technique into the first 20 seconds of the first song you hear from them. Once you get past the 'holy shit, are they really doing that?' initial reaction, you realize that's it. You try another song, and it's the exact same thing. It's static, overly technical elevator music. Give me a power chord progression or minor scale riff to bop my head to any day of the week. But, they're where they are, so there's something to bet said for that.

Music is not about any of the things you list IMO. Music is about how it makes the listener feel. If you hear something and you can't connect to it then stop listening to it. All music has worth. Its all about making that connection. Not about competition. Music changes it is not a static thing. All music from the first man to bang on a log with a stick until now adds to the collective whole of what music is. I have to ask. Why if they don't care for or understand a piece of music do people think its ok to put it down. Its all subjective. Just say you like it or not. And move on. I am not pointing this comment at just you. This is to anyone that is stuck thinking this way. If anything GenZ is more open minded to music. And I am A boomer .Peace@@Annunaki_0517

It's one thing to not like them, but to say they "suck" is outrageous. Music taste is 100% subjective. You either like it or you don't, but every person in Polyphia is an incredibly talented musician. Tattoos have nothing to do with it. Most people over 30 thought The Beatles made devil music when they came out and were getting popular. Just goes to show you that you can't teach an old dog new tricks I guess. Also, I'm not listening to any opinions of a dude who pronounces "Cerberus" like "seer-a-bus". Come on bro. Also the comment you made about his new signature was so fucking dumb. He got the idea from an Ibanez he picked up from a guitar store. He couldn't find any information about it, so he contacted Ibanez. They told him the guitar was a MASSIVE failure and they'll never make something like it again. He asked them if they could make him something like it because the one he had was so shitty (the model they admittedly said was garbage) and they were reluctant. He told them he had someone else who would build it (Tosin Abasi offered to do it because they were unwilling to give Tosin what he wanted as well) and they decided to do it. It then turned into a demo guitar which they kept altering until it became what he wanted. You made it seem like he forced Ibanez to build it which is just dumb. Also also Polyphia style bands did not contribute to the "death of real music". 4 chord pop did that all on its own in the 90's. Your takes are extremely horrible.

@ayeronical
@ayeronical Год назад
instrumental music and music with vocals are two departments, if you learned to write instrumental music, you'll quite struggle to get a good grasp of vocal melodies unless you re-observe music with vocals, that's how I learned after all. vocals are less octave-dynamic and does not quite mix well with fast-arpeggios (even raps aren't arpeggiated melody) because vocal melody is more of ascension-descension and monotone/duotone pattern when it comes to fast rap-pace vocals. Polyphia uses a lot of octave jumping and arpeggio as their flavor of instrumental music, and of course, since there are no vocals, practically the whole song is a whole riff playground. You can see them adjust their melody complexity when it comes to ABC and Bloodbath to make the vocals easily adapt to the beat. It seems impossible to put vocals atop Polyphia because they write instrumental music, try putting vocals on Megalovania or some 200BPM instrumental music, it's the same degree of impossible lol, there's a reason why it's called instrumental, and not minus-one.

It's hard to imagine that Holdsworth wasn't aware of what could be done to take guitar out of the usual chords/solos and still be popular enough to be on record, as done before him by Jeff Beck. Holdsworth admitted he loved jazz saxophone (Coltrane) and that inspired his style. He mastered innovative guitar lines in a mostly unconventional jazz format but he didn't really cross over into other genre's did he. The most notable thing about his best album Blow by Blow is the RHYTHM section - he is the weak link in this own band. He has been promoted above his talent by the music press IMO. I think those who hate polyphia is just due to poor musical memory. Some people just can't memorize complex pieces and then blame them for their inability. Goat for me is one of the most memorizable songs from them along side playing god that I had to learned them both in classical guitar. They're are fun as shit to play with and goat sounds even greater in accoustic. Ego death is another one that I'm learning, the first 60 seconds are one of the most beautiful and difficult riffs I've ever heard from a guitar. I'm learning it and when you slow it down you can fully appreciate those first 60 seconds. A literal death of the ego is required if you even want to play it fast. Some people can't just appreciate fast paced music. And that's okay, but to say something sucks because of it is just absurd. And to say their music is math, literally every song is math. Everything you listen to is literally math. Their recording are just made super tight post production, but when you actually play their songs live they sound human. For something to sucks, it literally requires to be tremendously bad, beyond human comprehension. Is just sounds like bitter and jelous talk (how I know?) Few years ago I hated polyphia too because of how Tim looked. I've let my ego died and began to learn from someone who's essence is new to the guitar world. Essential even. A lot of people are interested in guitar thanks to him. I had to learn goat and playing god when I first heard them this year because nothing sounds like them. The reason guitar stopped being mainstream is because it got repetitive. And now this guy's come along to atleats give new life and y'all just shit on it..make it make sense lmao. Jealousy holds everyone back. Learn from the best and shut up

Oddly never heard of Polyphia, but I know what fret-boring masturbation is, and from what you describe, Polyphia sounds like it. When I was a teen attending MI in the late 80s I thought the more you could shred the better a musician you were. That’s why I took private lessons from Paul Gilbert. When I grew up I realized there was a difference between great guitar playing and great musicianship. While shredding is impressive and requires the development of great skill, what’s the point if it’s emotionally unmoving? That’s just masturbation. I had to realize what drew me into music in the first place and that was the soul I found in it. If music, more specifically a song doesn’t move you, what’s the point? Randy and Eddie could shred with soul, wing-nut not so much. Amazing guitarist, but a lousy musician, if that makes any sense beyond my own head. Addendum- Perhaps I’m being too harsh on Wing-nut. As a teen I saw him play with Alcatrazz when he was an up and coming sensation, and loved that music. It’s his later solo work combined with his arrogance that has left me with the image of him as a jerk-off.

I’m pretty sure iv not heard anyone sound like they don’t know what they are talking about based on the opinions they have stated. First off Tim Henson was playing Malmsteen songs when he was like 13 years old lol. Malmsteen has got nothing on Tim. Tim can play Malmsteen riffs and licks but Malmsteen can’t play Henson riffs and licks. Doesn’t that tell you something? Also why wouldn’t you do or say whatever you had to to get your vision brought into reality. Tim Henson makes Ibanez a lot of money. That’s why they made the guitar. And when the guitar came out originally it didn’t sell well because there wasn’t a demand for that kind of instrument. The kind of demand that now exists which is why it took 5th place. Make sense? Also Tim Henson has more style in his left testicle alone than 95 percent of guitar players. Your gonna say what? That Malmsteen has more style than Tim? That would be laughable. The most ridiculous part though was that Malmsteen plays with feel and Polyphia or Henson doesn’t. That’s super wild. Malmsteen just tries to play arpeggios as fast as he can while Tim can an does use the same amount of notes but in a much more creative and melodic way. You just sound mad that someone is so much cooler and better virtuoso wise than Malmsteen while being so much younger and better looking(you said it lol) while having so much more style haha. Polyphia's sound does take you on a journey, and it's not actually very complex, if complex at all. It's just that to your generation blues licks with bends = feeling, that's not what this is but it's not what it's supposed to be either. It's instrumental music that fits the modern landscape of popular music, so if you don't listen to much of that, then you naturally are not atoned to the language and therefore miss out on the story they tell.

It makes the fans feel things. It's not sadness or joy, but there's euphoria, passion, they have very nostalgic and melancholic passages in their deeps cuts... There's a plathera of more complex and technical players, but they're lacking this. The guitarist sounded like Clapton on the Beano Album. He had a killer sound . On the bands break I went over and introduced myself as Paul and he said his name was Ron. I told him I loved his Marshall and which model is it because I would love to get one if I could find one cheap. By then I was looking into Rons face and suddenly it hit me. WTF it's Ron Wood from the Stones. It turned out this was a hobby band. They played at small clubs under a new name for every gig to keep the media away. It was just meant to be fun. Anyways he had 2 weeks before played in a small studio with a band doing their first record. The studio got an amp in for him that once the record was over they were going to sell. Ron set it up for me to pick up at Selmer Music Store. It was in U.S. money about $280.00 USD cash. The amp was a 69 Marshall JCM 50 head. It is now sold as a model 1987x as a reissue. I met a lot of big names but mostly in rooms full of people so I could not have a conversation. Only Keith Moon and Steve Howe did I spend any time with. My best friend was Elton Johns accountant who was my band Tallis biggest fan. He taught me how to manage and promote without any money, lol. I have watched your video for several years and kind of witness the things happened in this channel,so from the point of view as a long time follower,I think you are a really smart person , you have your own strong opinions, and really good at delivery these out. which is impressive. But in my culture we call these " small smart" , you really need to become more open minded and not criticize things in a negative point of view. some time you dont need to be mean and harsh to point out some unique and sharp opinions. your channel is dying and there must be some reason. when you get " big smart" then people will appreciate more what you did and said, you will feel more love and happiness. I really hope you get better with this channel and get less mental health issues. But if you are not changing, we all know how things will end up with. I m unfollowing now and wish you all the best.

You just said I have mental health issues because I expressed an opinion on musical taste. Which of us is being small-minded here? Is society this unaccepting of divergent opinions that it’s now considered crazy to disagree in matters of opinion? Maybe you should reassess.

This guy's comments about Polyphia's lack of emotion and fretboard acrobatics, reminds me of how my classic rock guitar friends used to talk about Joe Satriani. "I'm sure he's a virtuoso, but he's just showing off. He's got no soul." Believe it or not, guitarists used to say the same thing about Hendrix and Beck. Some people just don't get it. There's plenty of groove and emotion in Polyphia's music, it's just not the kind of music that he finds groovy or emotional. Different strokes for different folks. Hell, it took me years to appreciate polka and Romanian gypsy music, but one day I just got it, and now I can appreciate it. I still haven't found a way to groove on the Grateful Dead, but there's got to be something there, right? Millions of Deadheads can't be wrong.

The guitarist in polypia (tattooed one) was making fun of bending, with a joke as boomer bends. A little bit provocative, but funny actually :) Then I saw in some comments people calling these new guys as teen tappers. That teen tapping joke is also hillarious. :))) The comparison you brought however, malsmsteen vs polyphia, is very true. The new guys do not have the vibratos or bends, which Malmsteen used always perfectly. Listening to Polypia is like listening to some other instrument rather than guitar. Bends and vibrato makes guitar (especially electric) sounds like a guitar.

I don't like polyphia, but I don't care if something is too much technical or whatever. I love miles Davis and necrophagist too, I listen to steely Dan and meshugga. If it sounds good to me I'm ok with that, I can find interest in death metal and in blues. They are very different but I can see good things on both styles, or others like country, fussion, flamenco, classical... One thing I don't like is the quantisation on music, it sounds too much artificial, but sometimes can be necessary.
