The Ensemble Oscillator was designed by Matthias Puech and 4ms Company and is a polyphonic voice of sixteen sine-based oscillators combining additive, FM, phase distortion, and wave-folding synthesis techniques.

This video convinced me of buying an Ensemble Oscillator. I really wanted those hassle-free diatonic chords (and all the dissonance in between). The module hasn't let me down and neither has your review. Thanks for this great reference video.

it gets gritty, but I'd be happy to give up both the wavefolders for more control over the oscillators. more fm algorithms would be killer on this thing.

But a polyphonic oscillator only makes sense, if the voices can be processes parallel by other modules, like filter, envelope, and if the voices can be triggered by multiple gates and CVs from a polyphonic keyboard controller.

Great demo of the Ensemble Oscillator! How did you get that bass percussive sound at the same time as the high notes? We tried to patch ours but are not getting anything close to the wonderful sounds you are making!

im quite tempted also to get into a small modular.but still bit afraid :).also for economic reasons,but also musical ones. lots of modular sounds well,but also havent heared many memorable things. seems small systems inspire more manual play.wonder if more modules inevitably lead into more focus on technology maybe and less on the play of the instrument...? partly because the process of building the instrument while playing it? anyway, i felt yours sounds different. also i really love the quality of the sound from the ensemble!! keep posting more stuff.! also nice name for your chanel!!! :)

Thanks ! Im programming modular with vcvrack already since quite a while. Was thinkin abou2x 84hp might be perfect for the modules i imagine :)! Also use modular grid But at the moment it exceeds my non existing budget no matter how i plan it 😹. Maybe ill join the club in a while..;). Also tempted with the 4ms sampler and marbles stages maestro morphagene ochd etc.. too many nice modules... still nice to think that its possible also to build smaller units like a capable sampling unit.. In vcv rack i was often surprised what kind of sonic adventures one can have with just one osc filter adsr and tons of cross modulation with lfos vcas... Greetings;).. hope to see your bigger rack as well! sonically i feel the ensemble osc has a wonderful rhich character...! Just one question, if you would play it via a keyboard, is it fully polyphonic with harmonic spread contained?

@@clouds533 hi clouds, I want to encourage your journey into eurorack... I feel exponentially inspired since I began patching; making music has become like meditation, as well as very philosophical and a brilliant experimental platform.... I understand your hesitation regarding the musicality of lots of modular conTent... though imho there are artists who transcend this, there is a significant learning curve... so notwithstanding my love for modular, it has been almost two years of patching most nights often for many hours and I'm only just approaching compositions that I believe worthy of release or performance I would encourage you to consider a 'hybrid' or semimodular setup . I started with the Moog DFAM which eurorack is well suited to expanding. Also, choose 1 fancy module (such as this one or the others you mention) and otherwise buy or build a bunch of basic Utilities and VCAs- if you don't fancy DIY (I don't) then you can find secondhand modules , especially those built by others , for relatively little money.. I have a large case full which cost me less than a basic poly synth.. even with such a large case, I still find my best works feature other sounds beyond the modular .

@@clouds533 it's been year, but I want to say that the 4ms ensemble is perfect for a tiny system since you get all that note quantization handled already. It needs minimal patching to be musical. a few lfos and an envelope with some reverb/delay is enough to keep me entertained for hours on end.

So would this module accept polyphonic midi to cv signal? Or is it polyphonic in the sense that you can modulate/sequence the root and pitch inputs independently?

It has 16 oscillators that are quantized to a scale. Using root and spread or pitch and detune you can adjust the frequencies before or after quantization. This gives you a lot of control but you are not able to send in polyphonic midi signals. I hope this helps!

I love having these kinds of videos on in the background while I work but it would be nice to have an actual voice over so I didn't need to read :-) But I get that not everyone likes talking.

@@pitchpatch I find that reading text and watching what's happening can sometimes be difficult because the text occasionally is too fast to read/process/and see what's happening. If someone is speaking, they're generally not talking faster than I can follow. But I understand that talking overtop can be interruptive if it's happening at the same time. There's definitely a balance to strike for these types of videos! Regardless of your chosen format I'm still going to watch! :-)

it's not at all, you can get some incredible tones from this module once you run it though some filtering. Pitching it an octave or two down is super nice too. I use it for ambient beds and drones all the time.
