Spotts Performance builds a stout 1970 Ram IV for 70 Bonneville Funeral car. Engine is stroked to 461 CID, dished Icon pistons (designed by Spotts Performance) custom hydraulic roller cam, ported heads, electronic ignition pushing around 500 HP. This engine was built and detailed to look completely factory, yet have tons of torque.

I’m Amazed when I’m at a Pontiac show and people don’t know what my dual quad RAV is in my car. Half the people on here don’t know what a RAIv is or what manifolds were available. I will say some are right though about using up the real IV heads when there aluminum available. As someone who has done real IV cars it would be nice if the parts for restos stayed for restos . Plenty of aftermarket these days to choose from that looks the part, and the IV stuff is getting rare and hard to find. . But either way great build, paul does a great job with these and knows his stuff. 👍

It was a cool project - Since they never had one, it was a cool idea to make it look stock under the hood.

Cool motor, Waste going into a hearse. Talk him into a stock low compression 455. Save the RAIV for a nice Goat or Fbird.

where could I get exhaust manifolds like that. I didn't think you could get RA 4 manifolds for a 67 firebird.? I didn't think they ever made RA 4 long branch. what car did they come in?

69 FB RAIV manifolds - fits 67 - 69 F body and 65-70 Big car Also the 69 GP, but only came in 69 FB/TA from the factory

must be putting out closer to 600 hp with roller cam
@spotperf1635
@spotperf1635 6 лет назад
not really - closer to 500 - its a hydraulic roller pump gas engine, designed for a very heavy 1970 Bonneville funeral car. Torque was the object while a good idle and streetability were important.
@BDAZZ67
@BDAZZ67 6 лет назад
spotperf. What type of head work was done to achieve the 500 hp! What kind of torque numbers is that putting down and was motor on dyno.

Shorter the stroke, higher the red line. Quicker for the engine to climb the rpms, the quicker the car. You get better the quarter mile times. Getting to the finish line first wins the race. Not having the best trap speed. I prefer the 400ci crank over 455. You can bore the block 60 over safely. With a roller lifter, 570 lift cam and a dual quad carborator manifold set up to breathe, that would kick ass on the quarter mile. My personal opinion.
@1972Ventura455ho
@1972Ventura455ho 2 года назад
I have a 467 that i shift at 6200. Unless your going to run aluminum heads that are ported there is no sense in revving a Pontiac engine. Pontiacs are all about torque not like a chevy that has to rev to do anything
@patrickshaw8595

@@1972Ventura455ho Old thread but: Okay race cars began classing themselves according to engine displacement long ago. They noticed that oversquare engines could be revved higher before breakage IF the valvetrain could be made to operate that fast. So overhead cams, four valves-per-cylinder, etc etc. "RPMS take up no space and weigh nothing", so they always made higher dynamometer numbers. Aaaand - then you are right that cars are not dynos. It's about accelerating the car. Until the day that infinitely variable transmissions (gotta love variable pitch constant speed aircraft propellers!) become a thing for two ton 500 horsepower automobiles having the most area under the torque curve used for the transmission you got puts you ahead every time. Aaaaaand passenger cars don't have displacement limits ; ) But then again neither is there a special class for supercharged and turbocharged engines either. Today I just dropped 4 grand on a custom fully counterweighted 3.75" stroke billet 400 crank. Already got the Carillo CP rods for it. Mahle making me some custom pistons. You get the idea - it's 7500 rpm redline time ! And nothing says if I want to (and can afford it) I can't supercharge it a little. Kind of like adding displacement without large diameter heavy pistons or con-rod-stretching stroke. Total answer is you run what suits you - my car is a corner-turner road burner and clutchin' gears and hangin' the ass end out excites me - and I'll run what I run. Ponchos rule and that's the facts Jack.

I'm just a bit stumped why anyone would build such a motor then kill it with the low performance low rise stocker intake ? Not to mention point type ignition ? Are you one of the purists So I'm gonna spend god know how much money just so I can make My Land Yacht look factory ? is it for some type of contest ? Because no offense . Hey I love stock just as much as the next guy but when it come's to what's under my hood .. unless I'm going thru tech and an IHRA event certainly NOT NHRA I don't care what anyone thinks . So I''m gonna slap down one of the Butler boys best manifolds and tear shit up until I crack open yet another Pontiac main Web ...
