This is the type of project that we get really excited about. It's a 25 year old pontoon boat that is 100% unrecognizable after we restore it. We tore it down to the bare bones, repaired a couple small leaks in the pontoons, and installed new EVERYTHING to make this boat just as nice as any brand new pontoon boat on the showroom floor....for a lot less money than buying new! New flooring, seating, electrical, railings, and even a new 115 hp four stroke outboard. This boat has it all!

Thanks for tuning in! I sometimes sell the used furniture if it’s salvageable. Motors I simply trade in to the dealer I purchase new motors through. The projects we tackle range so much in price based on the work done that it’s hard to give a really accurate number. Most of the projects with new floors, seats, and railings end up between $15K and $20K…still around half the price of a new boat.

Sad to not see the installation steps! For the console cabling, do you drill after installing the flooring? I find it easier to pass the cables through before the flooring is bolted on, so I was wondering. Thanks!

We've got lots of other videos covering pontoon projects in detail. This video is a full instructional of another boat we restored: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BPHTvVAqn7o.html I honestly can't imagine running the cables before the deck gets installed. I always install the deck and vinyl first, then cut in my holes for running electrical and outboard rigging.

Thanks for the great video! It was intereting to see all that went into rebuilding this old pontoon boat. So, how much did this rebuild cost, compared to the cost of a similar brand new boat?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! This was a serious transformation, and it was really neat because the boat was bought brand new in 1999 by the customer who brought it to us to be restored. The new motor and rigging components take the total up quickly, but most boats we restore with new flooring, railings, seating, and custom accessories end up somewhere around $15,000 to $20,000 before adding an outboard. New 20' to 24' pontoons with a 60hp to 115hp are usually around $40,000 to $60,000 depending on the brand and options. Our projects are usually around half the price of buying a comparable new boat.

What do yall do with the railings/consoles that yall take off that are still in decent usable shape?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 4 месяца назад
We usually sell them locally if they're usable. It helps build a little contingency fund in case we run into any additional items, transportation, etc. Otherwise a lot of the aluminum gets scrapped.

Only thing left is the toons, frame and steering. What did this cost compared to a new boat?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 4 месяца назад
Yep, this was as close to a new boat as you can get. A new 24' with a new 115hp Mercury and all the options this boat has is close to $50K these days. This customer saved between $10K and $20K and get to keep the same boat that they bought brand new in 1999...plus they get to continue making more memories on the boat that they love and already have great memories on. There are some cases where a new boat is worth considering, but they get the same motor warranty as a new hull, and their seats have a 6 year warranty from a company with some of the best customer service possible. If a seat gets ripped they don't have to go to a dealer and wait months to maybe get a replacement for a huge cost...they can call Pontoon Stuff and have a new cushion within a few days!!

Laid up for a few weeks but really enjoying you videos. I have a 1995 20’ StarCraft StarDeck and my wife really likes the back sun deck and built in changing room. Thanks for showing a possible way to include those in a rebuild. Do you have any suggestions for temporary repairs to torn vinyl seats?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! Most boats that are trying to get by for an extra season or two will use vinyl tape to cover rips or seams that are pulling apart. It's not the prettiest thing, but it will keep water from getting in at the foam, and if you throw a towel over the seat you'll never know the tape is there!

Approximate cost for this featured restoration?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 4 месяца назад
Most of these restorations are around $10,000-$15,000 in materials from Pontoon Stuff. The repower with a new outboard can add $10,000+ in a hurry. Still ending up significantly less than a new boat!

There are several factors that play in unless you're doing a whole new railing kit and everything. I will have more videos coming up that will show the railing installs and fitting everything up with the railings. You're welcome to send me an email and I can send you the build sheet for this boat in terms of seating and accessories. TomsPontoons@gmail.com

So I have the same console but have a side mount throttle at the moment for my Yamaha 50 hp outboard. Thinking of a binnacle mount like you put on this. You have any suggestions on what to get? The side mount is a 703 I believe.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 5 месяцев назад
Yamaha's 704 Binnacle control would be your best bet. You can purchase the control new, but will need a keyswitch and ignition harness to go with it. You may be able to find a good used set on eBay or even at a marina close to you. This video shows a bit about that control: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OC_BWUWC8mw.html

I'm really glad you addressed the "changing station." We have a similar type setup in our exisitng Avalon pontoon where we store the porta-pottie and the front fishing seats. Any idea when Pontoonstuff will be coming out with that full rear bench seat, and can that "modification" be made(and shipped) by you guys? or will that be comong form Pontoonstuff as well? We are using our 2009 Avalon through this season, but lining up a full restore this spring.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 2 месяца назад
I'm not sure if that's in the plan for Pontoon Stuff to make something like that. They offer some bench configurations that go across the rear. It would be pretty difficult to fabricate something without having the boat on site. I am hoping that they come out with a lean back seat that has a flip out changing room at some point. That's very common on a lot of pontoons and would be an easy add-on for them to do in production.

I'm buying a 2020 model pontoon that has been garage kept it's entire life. It does have treated plywood decking. After watching this, should I be worried about the decking seeing it's 24 year's old? No soft spots but I'm worried now cause you say the life of treated wood is usually 25 to 30 year's.
@swollz1
@swollz1 3 месяца назад
Sorry meant 2000 model.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 3 месяца назад
@@swollz1 If you plan to continue using the boat as is I wouldn't be worried about the plywood for a long while if it's been garage stored and able to stay dry between uses. If you started to feel soft spots you could reassess, but that's not likely if it was that well taken care of. If you ever tear it down to replace the carpet with vinyl then I would 100% replace the plywood because you'd be that far into the project...that way you can get another 20-30 years of worry free boating with it.

Hey Tom, I’m going too start a restore on my 20’ crestliner in September and have my kit from PS delivered. I ordered the 20’ kit though and after seeing your vids, I see you order an extra foot for trim. Will I be ok with the 20’ kit, not sure if id be able to do the exchange. Thanks for any info you can provide.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 2 месяца назад
I only order the kits the way they come, so if your deck measures 20' long you will be 100% fine with what you ordered. I've had one piece come in out of the nearly 100 boats we've restored in the last few years that was cut a little funny and didn't work. They got me a new roll the next day to take care of the issue! Usually the 20' kit is closer to 21' of length....I never count on that, but it's usually how it comes (if I did a 21' deck I would order the 24' kit to be safe!)
@IPlead5

What is the cost for you to do something like this?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 5 месяцев назад
Most of our projects on a 24' boat like this where we replace everything from the deck up end up somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000. Tons of different levels of seats, accessories, etc. A new outboard adds quite a bit quickly, but is the heart of the boat in terms of peace of mind out on the water!

You know, I've thought the same thing. However, I think they may have changed the chemicals in it while still referring to it as CCA Treated. Or perhaps they lowered the amount of arsenic to a safer level. Either way, I try to wear a respirator and glasses whenever cutting or sanding the stuff!
