Nah he would be completely fine he almost launched his family on top the bridge… If his kid went over there forget about it.. oh and yes I live here and go through this canal weekly.
@@j.thomas7128 thats exactly false. Its much harder to make a sailboat go in light air. Thats just a stupid saying some landlubber came up with. Totally false.
You have no choice. The current is so strong it can push the boat backwards. You can see that here with the pontoon boat. Going with the current at a slow speed You have no control. I've see slow boats dragged by the current into the bridge!
You asked how the captain of the Grady White could have avoided the stuffings,.... He had power-trim on the two out boards,... I'd be tempted to try "lifting" the tilt on the outboards by 10 degrees to lift the nose,... apply a small amount of thrust and attempt to "tack" up the channel rather than go head on,... directly into the waves.
What?? This isn’t haulover. Also. A traditional boat is much closer to a bathtub than a pontoon ever will be. Being that traditional boats can collect and hold on to water where a pontoon does does not. It is much much easier to sink a traditional boat than it is to sink a pontoon. 🤦♂️
good for you... enjoy your lawn chair. Some of us enjoy our boats... and the pt pleasant canal is a hell of a lot of fun if you arent in a tiny boat...
Besides fishing charter boats I havent really been on a small boat. What are these "captain's" doing wrong? Not hitting rhe throttle when waves are coming???
2, 3, who knows soon, perhaps 4 logs. It's a power to dragweight issue, not the number of floats. There was a one on the Ohio years ago, 3 logs and 4 350hp tricked up mercs. Could run 70mph on the river (and yes the Ohio has rough water at times and some places all the time)
What's the point of having a no wake zone in the canal? Did someone tell the water that it was a no wake zone? Not one of those boats was going wake zone speed, kind of pointless in rough waters like that.
when you're pushing against 7-8mph of current there isnt a whole lot of no wake you can do... it is what it is...they just dont want you running through on plane
@@CaptainSloose which is stupid.running through on plane causes a lot less wake than crawling with your motor trimmed way up.especially with large displacement vessels.
@@edwardcote1331 the canal is pretty narrow I don’t think I’d want all the weekend knuckleheads running through there all hooked up. It’s my boating area though, I have to transit the canal any time I want to go into the barnegat. I pay an extra 2k for my slip so I don’t have to transit the canal to get to the ocean thankfully. Worth every penny.
With all the (some rather ignorant) hate directed at toons im going to set one up like one i saw on the ohio river just for south Florida (im in Crystal River) 30' 3 logs nicely appointed..and 4 race prepped 350 mercs. It would run against the current at 70mph. Oh yeah, it also had a flying bridge.
@@WavyBoatsalso a lot of people think all outboards have trim. Most rentals don't that I've seen. They don't want people burning up engines. For that matter I'm old enough my first I/O trim was a bolt and to raise it you turned a crank to pull a cable.
I don’t understand why people don’t use their motors to plan a little nose high in a canal like that. I go out of Indian river inlet Delaware all the time with a 22’ 8-10’ swells on out going tide just using the trim on motors to control my ride.
All these comment drive me wild. I live in key west and traverse by a seahunt ultra 196 powered by a Yamaha 115 HP. This is nothing... NOTHING. The biggest deal is the idiotic no wake here with such a squall. Tritoons would crush this trimmed up going faster. This really isn't that bad of a day.
@@WavyBoats Flemming key or Flemming bridge. This is a locals canal to go under instead of wrapping around the Army Dive Center. The canal is a wake zone. You'll have 44 ft freeman's and sport fishers passing by each other creating massive squalls on an outgoing tide. The markers are roughly 60 feet wide. Look up Flemming key cut or Flemming drive on satellite earth. It's the bridge on the Navy Base.
Does it really matter if you making a wake in a canal with waves like that. Seems there endangering boaters by limiting speed in what appears to be a strong current
News Flash if you’re boat is named after a lake than that’s probably where it should remain! 😂 Why are all these people so determined to go in the ocean in terrible conditions ? I know let’s get granny and children’s and let’s go cruising in a hurricane in my new flats boat 😂😂😂
First off buddy, this isn’t the ocean, and also pontoon boats do better than you would think in the canal. They are almost impossible to sink and some pontoons are meant for these conditions
When will pontoon boat operators (tooners) learn that those vessels are made for calm inland lakes or rivers, not for any kind of heavy wave action. Pontoons are the mini vans of the water.. neither one worth a damn.
Why yell at people sitting on the bow or forward of the railings? If they're not smart enough to realize that it a)illegal & b) just plain dangerous then let mother nature & natural selection do its thing!!
Obviously most of those captains don’t know what a boat wake is, or what causes it, or how it is amplified by the walls of the canal. And they don’t care if their wake creates a dangerous hazard to other boaters. They are completely self-centered and selfish, only wanting to hurry and get through the canal with no regard for the safety of others.
Couple thing; the pontoons trim is obviously in the absolute worst potion, you shouldn't speed or pass in the Canal, not a no wake zone except at marina entrances, all boats have different sweet spots as far as a safe speed in these conditions (learn this), not all express cruiser captains are turds, certainly not all center console captains are experts! And you gotta wonder about any pontoon captain in the Canal.
Why anyone brings glorified rafts in those waters is beyond me. Pontoon boat should stick to puttering up and down the bayou sipping cocktails and listening to James Taylor.
Many irresponsible, making waves passing fsst close to other boats, seriously unpolite, uncivilized, ane possibly ilegal. In my country would be immediately fined
