This beautiful South Bay pontoon boat has everything a brand new boat has EXCEPT FOR VINYL FLOORING...which can be fixed for a fraction of the cost of buying a new boat! In this video we are taking the old carpet off and installing new teak pattern vinyl flooring from Pontoon Stuff. The dirty and wet gray carpet had to go, and the new tan teak woven vinyl looks like it was always meant to be on this boat. Click the like and subscribe buttons, and leave us a comment if you like the new look for this boat.

Have you ever used that gray nickel coin pattern vinyl flooring (gym flooring)? It appears to be very tough and easy to maintain and clean.

I've just stuck to the marine vinyl products, really just the options from Pontoon Stuff. We use products that have been proven and have great warranties...safest bet over trying something new. I'd worry other materials wouldn't hold up to the sun.

Original carpet was an OK color, but that new vinyl is PERFECT for that interior! Your customer is going to be very pleased

I'm sure it looked alright for a year or two, but it wasn't meant to be on there forever...especially after seeing this teak pattern with the different tones of tan. I think their decision was perfect!

Looks Amazing as usual. Do you know what year companies started switching from carpet to vinyl? Just curious Great Video keep them coming

Thanks Jason! I've seen boats that are 10 years old have vinyl original from the factory BUT it was the thinner heavy duty style. No cushion, not as comfortable, definitely not as aesthetically pleasing, and usually stains very easily. I think the woven vinyl options started around 2015 to 2016 on some boats, and then really took off as the best and most popular option in 2018 and 2019. Now it'll never go back to carpet!

Guys great video's ! I just bought a flooring kit with the woven vinyl, question is it better to pre cut holes in the floor or cut after installing the vinyl, and should I skim over the screws and seams before gluing? thank you
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! We only precut holes in the plywood when we’re doing ONLY flooring and everything else is going back together the same way it was from the factory for fuel lines, console position, etc. If it’s a fresh start with new seats and everything then I just cut and drill new everything to match the new layout.

Do you use Tongue and Groove wood?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 7 месяцев назад
No, just the CCA marine grade treated plywood from Pontoon Stuff. I have encountered tongue and groove on only a couple boats out of almost 100 that we’ve restored. I think it was used by a couple pontoon companies way back in the day, but they all moved away from it from what I’ve seen.

Is the underskinning important? Does it make a big difference in protecting the underskinning?
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 11 месяцев назад
It's important on boats that are traveling faster than 15-20 mph or will be on rough water often. This boat has a 150 hp outboard and goes around 32 mph wide open throttle...so that spray can cause a rougher ride and a noisier ride. It really helps with efficiency and quieting the ride on these more modern pontoons and tritoons.

hey nice work hope i can do the same how about woven vinal ? and i never understand how will the water drain ? plannning to put on catamaran indoor and outdoor have around 350 sqm 100 indoor 250sqm outdoor would you recommend to glue it direct or just to get it as a movable carpet so i can more it and wash it. the boat use is commercial so every day 150 people will step on it hope you can share some advice thanks
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 7 месяцев назад
This is a woven vinyl product here in this video. On pontoon boats the water runs off the floor and deck. It can go under the seats and under the railings. The vinyl is water resistant so water just runs right off. I would probably use it as movable carpet styles on something like that. I'm not sure how it'll hold up to that much traffic so having something that can be removed to clean or even replace seems like a better option.

@@tomspontoons thought about the carpet thingy just to make it by parts i just didnt understande where the water goes so if its inclined to the sides the water will pass left and right ? and than i can make french drain on the sides of the boat ? my worries that tha watter will be trap between the woven parts. other thing if i vacum it with water vacum i dont have workers problem it can be done 3 times a day will it make it work ? thanks alottttt
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 7 месяцев назад
@@michaeldanilov1740 Water can get between the weave, but it's not easy for it to get in there. If you have a fiberglass deck on that catamaran your best bet might just be an epoxy or other paint on flooring to protect and be easy to clean without worrying about water trapping issues. TuffCoat is a great option.

Another damn carpet! I hate companies for selling these! It looks great, feels great for about the 1st five years then its garbage. Great job again kids!!
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 11 месяцев назад
It feels good until it gets wet and stays wet for days at a time! Then the stains, traffic wear, and moss start to set in. There's a reason there are no boats at the boat shows and on dealer lots with carpet anymore...because it's NOT a good option for 99.9% of boaters out there!

The vinyl flooring seems great. But with that felt backing, i have samples and water just sucks into the felt. Worried it will hold water like carpet.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 2 месяца назад
I've actually heard that the felt is there partially for adhesion to the glue/deck, and also to wick moisture down to the wood where it will be able to dry quickly compared to carpet. I poured water onto a sample of vinyl over a bowl and let it sit. The water stayed on top until it evaporated...none went through. They say it's "water resistant" and not water proof, but from my findings it would take some serious pressure (why I don't recommend washing it with a power washer!) to drive water into the weave. I actually have worked with other brands of vinyl where it does hold water and will have water seep up through a few days after bringing it into the shop. Not sure how much is on the wood or held in the vinyl, but that does seem worrisome.

@@tomspontoons That is interesting. My samples are from marine vinyl fabric online store. Not the most expensive stuff, but I wonder if different manufacturers have different layers to help with this issue. I have samples from captains choice marine flooring coming. They tend to be even thicker than the ones I have, I am curious how well the new ones resist water.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 2 месяца назад
@@crackedphone6912I don’t think the thickness is the biggest factor. I think it’s the tightness of the weave and the water resistance of the foam backing. Some seems to be more porous that others and maybe it’s the foam that holds the water?
@crackedphone6912
@crackedphone6912 2 месяца назад
@@tomspontoons Good point on the weave tightness. My worry about the thickness is how long they'll hold water compared to thinner ones. The samples I have seem to have a looser weave. I see little gaps between threads all over. Some gaps are bigger than others. Perhaps this is the reason mine will absorb water sitting on top. Of the 3 samples I have, 2 of the colors absorb right away, the third takes quite a bit longer.
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 2 месяца назад
@@crackedphone6912 I would avoid the ones that quickly absorb water. The bummer is that the fully waterproof vinyl options are not as stylish looking and are not as comfortable to walk on as they're just felt backing with a full vinyl layer on top....no cushioning!

I installed the teak woven vinyl flooring on my pontoon, I put it outside for a few weeks waiting for my new railing to come in, we had a rain storm yesterday and when I brought it into the shop to start installing the railing the flooring is saturated from the rain, is this normal, if I walk on it the water squishes up and kind of foams up, if I push down on the vinyl and slide my hand across the floor it I can force quite a bit of water out of the vinyl, its seems like the felt is soaked. I worry the water will rot the new plywood prematurely. what are you thoughts, thanks
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons Месяц назад
I’ve never had that happen on my own boats nor boats I’ve done for customer. Do you remember where you sourced your vinyl flooring from?

Does the plywood not get wet with vinyl flooring
@tomspontoons
@tomspontoons 11 месяцев назад
Most vinyl options are water resistant...this one in particular would pretty much take a power washer (never use one to clean this stuff anyway!) to drive water through to the wood. The water just runs off and the surface dries quickly. I predict that the plywood on vinyl floored boats will last longer than that vinyl itself...which is going to be a VERY long time.

@@reynoldsautorepair173 I do not. The video linked below shows using it for the transom area. For the sides I use a 1/4" machine screw at the joints and mid way. @@reynoldsautorepair173 I have a metal cutting chop saw that I use for that, otherwise a sure hand on an angle grinder with a metal cut off wheel will work too. What brand tachometer do you have? If it's Faria, there's a chart on their website that tells you what pole setting to use for whatever motor you might have.
