Note: I forgot to mention and clarify, poodles that have more than 1 color are usually considered pups with genetic faults, hence, still currently NOT allowed in the show ring.
I am about to buy a an apricot colored poodle pup with white color on the nose and forehead..quite expensive so I want to know if they are prone to genetic diseases
So informative! My poodle was apricot (5 months old when I adopted him) and his back had like white hair tips and some white fur on his tail. Now he is 9 months old, he is a darkish apricot with red ears and red back and his white fur tips disappeared and turned red, he still has white clumps of fur on the base of his tail but it doesn't look like it's gonna change any soon (if it will even change) update a year later: His fur didn't change much at all, he is beautiful. The white hair on his tail are barely visible because the curls cover it (I only trimmed his tail once, he has a long fluffy tail)
This reminds me of goldfish I have had. I bought a baby fancy goldfish who was 100% copper-colored when I bought it. It then turned orange on the bottom 1/2 half of its body with black on the top 1/2 of its body. Then it changed again to being orange on the top 1/2 and silvery-white on the bottom 1/2. These changes happened over the course of about a year. I missed my fish being copper, as I chose her because of it, but I thought my fish was pretty in all of the colors it turned out to be.
Hahahaha! I feel you!! I miss my golden puppy hahahah she's cream now. This color change also happened to the clownfish that I rescued as well. The owners were moving out of the country and they were looking for a family to adopt their salt water tank. From like a yellowish color when properly cared for with the proper equipments as well, they turn into the exact same color as Nemo, a deep red orange color with bright white and black stripes.
Thanks so much for the informative videos. I'm a long time dog owner, but first time poodle owner. Iris is a 10 month old Silver Beige that is being trained as a SD. She was such a beautiful deep chocolate brown color but she is already whiting out :-( .I have been a dog groomer for 20 years and have loved this awesome breed from the first day I started grooming.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching! OMG that is amazing!!! I have so much respect and support for SDs huhuhu I would love to learn from an expert dog groomer like you too!!
I have a brown miniature poodle and when he was a puppy he was a dark chocolate colour and has since faded. I don't care as I never had any intention of using him for breeding. He's still very loved.
Nutella? Lol! My little toy poodle was born pitch black. His mom was black & his dad was red. But I had done my research to know that 90% of poodles coats 'clear' & don't grow up to be the colour they were born. He is now at 8 months & turning a very dark brown with red tinge to it in sunlight. Whatever colour he turns out when his coat finishes clearing I'll love him regardless. He's the best! I'm surprised how many people buy any sort of pups without looking into the traits of the breed.
I know right. Lol! Sadly many fall for social media trends without doing their research. The later reality kicks in especially one about genes and how unpredictable they are. :) Yes yes and yes about color. I actually choose my dogs based on temperament and health above everything else. 😀
my blue poodle, was born black and now she’s 3 years old, and her fur is changing to blue. you’ve always been able to see that she has a different tone than true blacks. blue poodles are so pretty :D
Thank You for clarifying the color-name of my sweet Phantom Standard Poodle Sequoia! I had no idea what to call his beautiful colors! He’s 13 months old and such a happy boy! He loves all dogs and people, so that’s quite a change from my two very aggressive Border Collie-Queensland Girls! I am so glad I purchased him because he worth his weight in gold! 🐩💙🐩
I had a toy male silver beige tuxedo parti and a toy female solid Cafe Au Lait absolutely loved them it’s been years since I’ve had poodles. I’ll be getting a mini this year I wanted another silver beige or Cafe but they’re so hard to find so I’m just getting a solid black and hoping he stays black and doesn’t turn blue 🤞🏾
Hahahah! I cannot believe you are watching my weird content hahahahahaha!! Post videos of your life in SG please! I miss you all so much! I can't wait to visit SG again!
My apricot poodle had a more pink nose as a puppy that was more brownish as she got older and green to hazel eyes. Though it’s considered a genetic fault, those were in my top favorite physical characteristics of hers.
That’s beautiful! To be honest, the breed standards for what they are today all began with multiple genetic faults. It starts somewhere. To me, every dog is beautiful so long as they are well taken cared of!
I'm sure your Phantom is beautiful!! I do pray that eventually they will allow these markings to be shown!! Would love to watch them on the show ring! Oh yes, I can totally understand why color and markings are highly sought after. I too once was obsessed with Reds hahahha
You’re right about one thing-there is nothing wrong with any of these dogs and so much with humans! Isn’t all of this elitist obsession over color and purity of breed more about our human need to compensate for our own feelings of inadequacy as people than it is to ensure good health for our dogs? Like if everyone sees how how exclusive and awesome my dog is, maybe they’ll believe I’m more valuable? Gross. Just as no child can ever compensate for her parents’ lack of genuine self-love, no amount of beauty, intelligence, obedience, or even physical health in any dog can make up for his owner’s perceived lack thereof. God help us.
Thanks and thanks again. You explained well about the colors. We have an tea color puppy poodle, taken from a dog farm. Price 1.500 €. But I hear that now the prices have gone up. Is a lovely but naughty 🤦 Poodles are available in different but beautiful colors. May I say that even your eyes have a beautiful color. Thanks another time for your clips! 👍🐩
Thank you so much! Happy to help! Thank you too for supporting our little channel by becoming a member. It means a lot to us! Congratulations on your new furry family member! May I ask what you named him or her? Hahaha wild guess are you from Italy? XD
Thank you for this video! Very informative! I’m in a dilemma 🤦🏻♀️ the breeder I’m working finally has a little girl but she’s a dark apricot. I was thinking I would get a black pup since that’s what she’s had in the passed years. This will be my first toy poodle. That being said what are your thoughts on apricot vs black?
Hi Diana! You are most welcome! I am happy the video helps! Hahaha, honestly, color is not that big of a deal. It really just depends on your preference. Between apricot and black, I would only choose apricot because I like seeing the face and eyes of my dogs in pictures. With black, you will barely see their facial features. But what's nice with black is that when they get dirty, it will not be seen XD
Hello enjoyed watching your video. You’re considering the nature pool as our bichon of 13 1/2 years passed away several months ago. Would you recommend sticking to AKC breeders? I have noticed that there are other sellers online of poodles but not sure of their backgrounds and how they are raised. Thank you
Hi Andrew! Thank you so much! You know, it's really hard to say what is right from wrong because quite frankly, the world is just soooooo twisted. LOL I personally will always seek a reputable AKC registered breeder as my first choice and filter out from there. It's important to keep in mind too that being registered with the AKC doesn't automatically mean that they are good breeders. Also, no one breeder is perfect whether they are registered or not. Many of my own decisions were based on my values and what I deem acceptable given the many factors that I personally considered. Hence, I always just share from my own experiences to give people online a point of reference to make your own informed or educated decisions based on your own values and cultures ^^
Thanks for all the great info! is great for us new poodle owners. I had a question: my puppy was born black, but at almost 3 months she has faded quite a bit, so we're thinking she'll be a gray, silver or blue. Can we go back and update their registration if that happens? right now we registered her as a silver/gray, but what if she turns out being more of a blue?
Hi Fernando! Thank you so much for watching the video! If your pup is fading at 3 months, my guess is that you may have a Blue or Silver. I'm leaning towards more of silver since you said it's quite a bit. For Blues in my experience, their colors start fading at around 6 mos of age, but this can also vary. It would be best to update the registration for future reference, but I would wait at least a year to do that to see how much your pup will fade first. :) I regularly update my girls' registration most especially when I had them microchipped :) So it's not a problem so long as you have transferred the ownership already. Otherwise you will have to seek the help of your breeder.
Hello! As far as I know yes- so long as the liver points match the proper color. For example- white dogs are required to have black points- you can’t show a white dog with liver points. :)
If a poodle is red color and has a white patch in his chest... does this means it won't be accepted to compete based on AKC standards? Would the white patch be considered genetic fault? I'm trying to learn about poodles and your channel has been sooo informative!
Yes. A red with a patch is considered a parti colored pup. Not sure what specifically they usually have specific terms for that like a red parti color etc. But definitely not yet allowed to compete. Depends on club rules. 😊
I like your observation although not clear. Your statement about Partie and Merle poodles is very vague. They are not backed up by any researched. Meanwhile you explain that a partie poodle is a real poodle but because of their gens they shouldn’t be breed. But not in the case of Merle’s because there is little information about their genes? So you decide that for now they are not a pure breed poodle. But maybe in the future they will be? Are they or are they not. Or maybe your research should say, we have very little research and information at this time.
Thank you for your kind feedback. Genetic colors is definitely far more complicated than this. I tried to simplify it to keep it digestable for regular people. For those who want more info, there are links to the Kennel club breed standards. I based my statements on the common knowledge stated in the breed standard. But like any kind of medical information or information in general, things can change for the better or improvement over time. Much like they did not accept apricots and reds in the show ring, but today they accept all solid colors except the parti colors or two toned. I do not see anything wrong with my open ended statements because the reality is, there is nothing constant in this world besides change. I am open to change and accept good change:) In the future who knows, they may start accepting the parti colors. If this is not enough for you and you wanna get more technical about it. I think it might be best to find other sources of information that will satisfy your needs like reading the websites or books on the many kennel clubs' breed standards. ^^
In France, they don't accept particolor and Merle poodle in the breed's book. But some show accept them, not with the other poodles but in their own category : "Chien Particolore à Poil Frisé" Partie's poodle lovers can go with this.
Hi Carmen! Thanks for your comment. Hello to your beautiful pupper! To answer your question. With all due respect of course. 🙏 Without enough info, like I said, it’s still a debate how they came about. They could have been cross bred with Merle Aussies, but unless we have proper DNA tests, then these can only be speculations. But like I also mentioned, the statements I made are based on what are on the Poodle breed standards of AKC and FCI. :) Standards change over time but as of now, they are not in it. May I respectfully ask if your pup has a certificate of pedigree stating it is a “Merle” poodle?☺️
I'm against buying pets. There are so many stray animals in the wold. ADOPT DONT BUY!!! My poodle was BOUGHT by his previous owner but they failed to take care of him and that is how we got him. He has a white fur, a black nose and amber eyes. He is probably not a pure breed. He is such a good boy. But so playful. He tried to eat a bee today and got a shot bc of it and now he is sleeping lol.
@@Amtrak.taz. thank you for this! While I respect your opinions. To each their own choices. For me, adopt OR shop, just make sure you can give forever homes. I have seen so many kind hearted families who could not handle a rescue and it breaks my heart when they have to return them. Also, we are all entitled to our own lives. Let’s give everyone the freedom to make their own choices.☺️
@@poodlemom all the poodles I have adopted were fostered by my daughter. I know when I get them what there like. They immediately fit in my home. My daughter is excellent at finding the right puppy for the right owner.
@@poodlemomYES! I’ve always adopted dogs from Kennels or been given dogs. I chose to buy my beautiful ‘Phantom’ Sequoia so I could take him with me everywhere. I had a poodle as a teen, and I’ve always missed my ‘Harpo.’ Currently, my two other dogs are too aggressive and strong for me at this time of my life as a Baby Boomer. My kids and grandkids adore Sequoia, so he gets plenty of love, play and exercise!🐩💙🐩
As of yesterday I have 2 poodle pups (one 10 months and the other 8 weeks). The older one is smack dab between toy and miniature in size, and the younger one, according to her breeder, will probably grow to the same size. Both were rather expensive, but they came from careful breeders who raised them well. In fact the new baby, when she decided it was time to go to bed tonight, went into her crate by herself and zonked out. As for the colors, I'd say the younger one might be called polka-dotted -- she seems to be cream with red polka dots, lol. The older one is a deep, rich coppery red with a white chest. Neither is showable, but I don't care. They each have perfect poodle personality and I love them both.
I'm sure you have found yourself the best pups for you!! And yes, love goes beyond color, breed and size! Thank you so much for sharing this!! Hugs to your lovely babies!!
Hello! Shucks, I am so sorry to hear that. But nontheless congratulations on the new furbaby! Blonde, meaning the golden yellow right? So, yeap, you can expect your baby to fade. I have a video on a toy poodle that may have a similar color,- see if the color is the same. If it is, chances are your pup will fade into almost a cream white color. I'm not too sure about which colors are most sought after, it varies. But one color is undeniably popular and that is the red ^^ I hope this helps.
It's down to generic as to if they fade or not, many apricots darken to red, red can fade to apricot, blacks can look black at birth but could be blue or silver. White is obviously not a fading colour.
Hi there! Very informative. Thanks for all the info. We are thinking to get a toy poodle, Are u aware of any breeders? We lost our pet last week, looking for a replacement since our home feels empty. Can u let me know if know any. Thanks
Hahahha!! I feel yah 😂😂😂 People don’t understand what Blue is hahahah you can use gray I think. My friend who has a blue miniature calls him gray in front of others.
Hello! Only the breeder can get this for you. If the puppy doesn't have papers but his parents are registered pups, yes, the breeder can easily get papers for the pup when requested by you.
What? Summer was an apricot? I didn't know poodles can fade soooo much 😂 Now I'm wondering if my 3 month old apricot pup would also fade 😅 What were the colors of summer's parents?
@@poodlemom Is the color of the parents a factor on the pups colors? Or fur colors would really be random. My apricot pup's parents are cream and brown 😊
@@veniegasvenus It’s not random LOL! The genes of the parents are big factors. In Summer’s case, her grandparents may have been apricots. So her mom or dad may be a carrier of the gene. This is what’s hard when the Breeders really do not study the breeding line. They just breed all sorts of colors for fun and are excited to what color will come out. Chances are your pup may fade to cream because usually both cream and chocolate are high carriers of the clearing gene. Hahaha I’m so sorry if I am getting too scientific hahahahah
So the Merle poodles are definitely 100% poodles if you DNA test one it will come back as 100% poodle as long as the creator didn’t make re reveal but I have one in this 100% cool. Also just a little history for you Fools originally were not solid color they were actually multicolor and people read them Towne to start getting solid colors so the AKCS bunch of stickers they can be as far as the colors and what they will it to recognize is a little backwards and it’s also suspect it bad to get toy poodles with a miniature poodles at one point those noodles for bread down with a small Breed such as the Chihuahua. So with that said AKC their information you should take with a grain of salt because the European kennel club states very differently in the poodles originated in Germany anyway the actual boy in law which is a medium the medium size poodle is not recognized by the AKC for size as well but it’s been around longer than the toy poodle or the miniature poodle they also called incline pools they’re smaller than a standard poodle but larger than a miniature pony AKC here in America doesn’t want to recognize them or they actually consider them as standard poodles steel but Europe be recognized him take it all with a grain of salt
My poodle was apricot when he was young but at 13 years old he was fully white and he only had a light apricot ”stripe” on his back going along the spine!
the lady definitely was was out of her element and was not prepared. i wouldnt say she abused or mistreated them, she just didnt know what to do with them. my baby ended up having epilepsy and has, "behavioral issues", some deep seeded stuff, probably some trauma from the environment she was weaned in. i still love her personality, even though she can be mean sometimes lol
Hahah! I agree, it's my editing! XD I'll probably make an updated video of these. I wish RU-vid will eventually put that feature of re-uploading an updated video to fix mistakes and such.
@@mentayflor hahah no judgements here! Nothing wrong with not being a master of a 2nd language ☺️☺️☺️ Happy to make changes and improvements to the videos if I can. 🥹
I subbed bc I was liking the video, then you asked me to subscribe, which although terribly annoying I ignored bc YT is a business and everyone does it. You can imagine my shock a few mins later when you interrupt the video to bed my subscription AGAIN,... That is an instance unsubscribe. It's tacky and desperate, and frankly a bit rude. Trust people will sub if they want to. Sure, ask for their subscription once, but anymore than that looks desperate and pompous.
I AGREE 2000% !!!! Dogs only become ugly when they are not well taken cared of!! I sincerely believe that! All dogs that are well cared for, are beautiful and radiant!!!
.very informative. thanks for this one. in my case, archie was said to be a red toy poodle and heck he looked like one when he was 1.5 months but now he is like turning into apricot, not sure. but regardless, i love him so much. thinking of getting a second one by next year, but wanted silver. :)
AKC confirmation shows disqualify parti poodles, but AKC obedience, agility, hunt, etc allow all poodles. UKC does allow parti color poodles In confirmation. So sorry you didn't explain the patterns because some buyers want to know what fawn sable means and what abstract means. AKC Confirmation breeders may or may not have the choice puppy. My experience with 8 poodles over 40 years has proven that it's the parents (Sire & Dam) that usually show up in the puppy. In fact some AKC Champions have so much line breeding that negatively impacts the breed, but looks nice. I've had wonderful poodles from a breeder and a really bad fitting poodle from a champion breeder. I've had a very long lived and devoted poodle from a nonshow breeder and a very short lived poodle from a champion breeder. AKC isn't the only kennel club. Confirmation breeders are only one type of breeder - get a poodle from tested parents that hold characteristics and personalities that fit your needs. Poodles come in all different sizes, colors, and activity levels. Know what you want from your poodle and look around. Therapy-emtional support - it's out there. Hunting-agility - it's out there. Confirmation - it's out there. In all colors!!
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! Yes yes yes!! I definitely still have much to learn. For me, above everything, health is most important when it comes to genetics. 😅 One video is not enough to explain the complexity of breeding. I apologize if I am still lacking. But I try as best as I can to offer proper information as concise and digestible as possible. I truly appreciate this! Thank you!
Oh boy this is a tough one! I’m sorry if my answer may be roundabout. But sadly it is what it is. 🙈 Hope it helps though. So many factors to consider. The easiest way- is to have proof of pedigree and see the family history. But even with this it’s not 100% fool proof. Another way is to check for their traits- they should exhibit the Poodle “breed standard” of having curly coats that don’t shed, oval eyes, and relatively square in bodily proportions. However, with puppy millers everywhere this isn’t 100% followed as many have deformities already since many do not uphold the standards. Hence maybe you can check for both the pedigree and the traits of the puppy. This is why I highly encourage getting from reputable breeders who uphold the temperamental and breed standards.
My 2 year old red toy poodle is lightening up to an apricot from being outside in the heat all day with me in South Carolina sun. Anything i can do to keep him red?
I have a black and tan puppy poodle also called phantom color but it's not considered correct. I just hope she fades because she is very very black with these thin orange eyebrows. she is very cute but funny looking, lol
Thanks for your excellent videos! You are very thorough and informative. We have three toys. A beautiful 3 yr old black and white 8 lb male parti. A apricot 2 1/2 year old male 6 1/2 lbs., who is also gorgeous and sweet. Then our newest addition who just turned one. She is the smallest at 5 lbs and is red. She is a real little girl and so sweet and loving. She blended right in with the boys. She is very quick to mix things up with the middle one. They all love each other so much which just adds to the enjoyment. I actually had two poodles as child and just adored them too. A silver and a black. Unfortunately, as a teen my family dissolved and I lost them. I actually wound up homeless. Long story but I rebounded and actually achieved the AMERICAN DREAM as my life moved on 😊. So my wife and I now have 7 adult children and 5 grandchildren. We had all 7 in the first 11 yrs of our marriage. No twins! Please don't tell anyone but my wife and I still like each other! What a concept at 39 years into the marriage. My 30 yr old daughter (#5) and my son-in-law are having their first baby in June. They have two female red toy poodles. Her youngest one 1 1/2 yrs old is the daughter of her older one and our my middle one is the proud father. They visit most weekends so all 5 have a blast here. Thank God we have a very large home although finding them can be a challenge at times. We love them so much. They are my disconnect from my very demanding business. Let me just say they are living large in absolute luxury. They are all sleeping on Poppa as I write this. Life is good, because of God's faithfulness. He has richly blessed us, and allows us to bless others!
Hello MJ! Oh! Poodles come in all shapes and colors these days. There are a lot of color variety for parti colored poodles so it’s really not possible for me to put all the pictures 😂😂😂 So long as your pup comes from pure blooded poodle parents, I’m sure your pupper is a poodle 🙈 It would help to have kennel registration or a pedigree?
