does this apply down force on the back stroke too?

Yes it does because the paddle flips to the opposite direction on the backstroke and forces the brush against the side or bottom of the pool. Thanks for the comment! 🌊

Yes, it's nice to not have to pull this brush up against the wall constantly to get a clean surface.
