In California you cant leave a pool like this. You have to crush down the sides, then fill the hole with fill dirt, then topsoil . The mosquitos and drowning hazard. In a lot of areas, you can never build over that area again, nor can you put a pool. There are entire companies whose business it is to bury pools, and home buying inspectors who check there isnt one buried in the yard!

I used to work at a very large country club pool which was built entirely from 3/8" stainless sheeting over a metal skeleton. The sheets, though very stiff and strong, were not entirely inflexible and if you stomped on the pool bottom you could feel the give and hear an eerie echo.

I worked for a pool company in the late 70s, early 80s while attending college in NC and this was the construction method. Vermiculite or usually sand was used for the pool floor. I saw something posted on Facebook the other day and the lady had like six different layers of flooring laid in her house. Two different tile layers, plywood, linoleum, and at the very bottom or hardwood floors. She showed a side cut of it and it was literally like three or four inches thick, so weird. No one ever bothered to remove the old flooring they just kept adding new layers 😂

@@TheChloe1331 that’s not how property value works. It may lower your desire for this property but it raises the market value.
@TheChloe1331
@TheChloe1331 2 года назад
@@DoctorSess Actually it does. There's a huge difference between a cheap, ghetto metal/plastic hole in the ground and a proper pool. That is just an above ground pool in a hole. There's about a $25,000 up to $75,000 difference. The value can be even higher than that depending on the pool and where the property is. And bigger houses WON'T sell if they DON'T have a pool. And bad placement can bring down value, especially if local laws require such things like fencing. Imagine sitting on your covered patio, your pool is 1 ft past that and local laws require 4-5 high fencing. Nobody wants to sit in jail in their backyard. Now make it that cheap ghetto pool, and your value plummets¹. Oh, not to mention, that it makes the rest of your yard relatively unusable if you have to go thru the pool area to get to it. We took advantage of a bad pool placement and knocked $200,000 off our bid. And we got it

Nope, and that’s not what actually happened. The pool was emptied but trapped over to keep rain water and debris out. Unfortunately the weight of accumulated rain water and aging of the tarp caused tarp to stretch and rip. Some areas a temporary out of season decking is made just for that scenario (but without contaminating the pool).
@deerfish3000

I don't understand the previous owner's decision. You would get more home equity by just maintaining the pool. I can't imagine this was even legal because if someone fell through the deck because of a rotten board, they just landed in a sespit with a potential broken ankle or leg. It should've been filled in with concrete first.

some tips and observations: sprinkle some water on drying concrete to prevent surface cracking. cracks happen, when there is solid surface and "liquid" inside that is not settled - so the movement of the inside part will brake the solid surface. also, in case of unstable grounds there is a right choice to use gravel or similar thing as a "cushion".

That looked like a lot of work especially breaking concrete by hand. Concrete breakers are cheap so I'd have definitely bought one for this job.

And miss the free workout? 😉 They looked young enough to actually like some hard labour, but I´m with you on this one, mainly because I´m handicaped but also agewise... 😜

Honestly, this concrete seems to crack reasonably easily. If that's true, an electric breaker might actually have been harder on the back than hand tools.

@@Ragnar8504 My trade were in metall before I got early retirement and I only have limited experience with concrete, but as far as tools and machinery goes I have used quite a lot of them. If you are a novice/beginner with the tool in hand, allmost all things are hard! ;o) So I´ll take your word for the concrete work done, the state of the concrete and your conclusion! :o)

This is like a really brutal detention! Well done! 👏 Thank goodness no one ever fell through the decking.... and also that no malicious supernatural entities lived under it. 😁

Great video, I learned a thing or two about how pools are constructed, I always thought they were tiled, as we only have tiled pools here in the UK, makes perfect sense that you would just put a PVC liner in there! Awesome

I would like to see a detailed video on how you get all the wrinkles out of the liner when it's installed.

I've always been curious about these liners. Looks like they used a type of vacuum to get all the air bubbles out.
