Pool Hack: How to Remove Dust And Algae In Your Above Ground Pool using Garden Hose. Best Method!

This video will show you how to use the Garden Hose siphoning method to remove the dead algae and dust in your above ground pool. I have added a small see through container to make the process faster and to show you that it actually works.
The vacuum that the siphoning action creates is actually strong that it would stick to the pool floor. Make sure that you have a small hole in either the side or the top of the container so that it can suck some water to prevent the container from getting stuck to the floor.

I have spent so much money buying those plastic pool vacuums that you attached to your garden hose and I’ve never had any luck with them. This works like magic! Plus using a clear bowl you get the satisfaction of seeing all the nasty stuff go into the bowl and then disappear! I can’t thank you enough for helping me win the battle with my pool! BTW, I go to RU-vid all the time for things I don’t know how to do. This is the first and only time I have ever left a comment. that’s how excited and thrilled. I am after watching your video and trying it. Thank you!🎉

Oh my goodness!! This worked fantastically! I was so thrilled to see all the dirt get sucked away! I had not as much dirt as in the video but it was fine enough it went through my hand held net and would have gone through the net in the walmart vaccuum. THANK-YOU SO MUCH! As the other comments say yes it is taking water from the pool...and all the fine dirt/possible algae with it! Not so much water you can't add a bit more! This works! My issue more than algae was dead leaf bits and debris settling at the bottom of pool that the net cannot pick up. Or moves around and feels like you are making a difference. Then settles again and again I used an inch and a half pool hose with zip tied to the extension handle and 908gr size becel butter container. I had my doubts, but was proven wrong. It works! I am so glad I don't have to use the sand filter to vacuum pool any more. The sand would get it the pool, ugh. The bigger hose has great suction but soaked up a lot of water. THANK YOU for posting. I truly hope I remember this when I open pool next summer...got write it down.

I like this idea. Those water jet pool vacuums can be modified to do a similar thing though. Last year I attached a pool hose to the output portion of one of those with duct tape and created a siphon and used the vacuum that way and without the water hose connected. It worked great and the bristles of the brush would disturb the particulates on the bottom just enough for them to loosen up and go into the siphon
@diymanual
@diymanual День назад
Thanks for sharing. That is a nice trick and since the jet pool vacuum can be attached into the pole directly, you don't need to tape the hose into the pole anymore. Now I need to look for my old Jet vacuum and modify it so it's easier to install and remove the hose and the pole.

It’s dead algae, I see nothing floating and I rinse out my filter every couple of days. Thanks for the heads up.
@diymanual
@diymanual 11 месяцев назад
@@suzannerwt Yes. I mean, as you vacuum, some of the dead algae will get disturbed and get mixed back into the water . So, as they are floating in the water, you can turn the filter on so it can grab some of the floating ones before they settle back into the floor.

@diymanual
@diymanual 10 месяцев назад
You are correct, as long as you can fill the hose with water either by submerging both end or filling it with water with cup or attaching it into a spigot or whatever ways you can think of to start the siphoning action.

What length of hose is best for the most suction? Recommendations?
@diymanual
@diymanual Месяц назад
any length that will allow you to reach all the area of your pool and place the other end lower than your pool floor. The bigger diameter of the hose the better but it will suck more water out. Just make sure you use a heavy duty hose so that it will hold it shape and not fold or kink. Good luck.

@markb8954
@markb8954 11 месяцев назад
Think of the hose as a very long siphon. Just like siphoning dirty water/substrate in an aquarium. Once you get it flowing (from tank to ground) you just move the hose about sucking out any debris.
@Som3kindofmonst3r
@Som3kindofmonst3r 6 дней назад
Can you do this in a in ground pool? And also can you use a pool vacuum hose?
@diymanual
@diymanual 6 дней назад
It will if you can place the other end of the hose in a lower ground than your pool floor. It works with gravity so the other end will need to be lower than your pool floor. Or you can use a transfer pump like this. amzn.to/3xqRsfy If you have a vacuum and a paper or DE filter, you can use a flock amzn.to/3L5kzIn to vacuum it. If you have or if you can do a vacuum to waste you can do that also. Hope this help.

Are you talking about the water inlet where I put the hose in? That is the chemconnect that bestway included in the package. It's a chlorine dispenser. You can use it to control the amount of chlorine to release into the water and is supposed to help the water get cleaner. This will replace the chlorine dispenser floating in your pool. You will need a 1 inch tablet for this. Below is my Amazon Affiliate link if you are interested. amzn.to/3V6n8j0 Here's another youtube video I made on how to load tablet on chemconnect. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_Vf4YPaCnv4.html Hope this helps.

@jenniferwilliams2676 Месяц назад
Hi, do you have any tips to get the suction to start working? Thank you
@diymanual
@diymanual Месяц назад
Sure. 1. Make sure that you are using a heavy duty hose so there is no kink that will stop or restrict the suction. Light duty or flex hose will never work on this. Use at least a medium duty or heavy duty hose. 2. Make sure there is no air gap inside the hose. You can do by lifting the suction end of the hose up and watch the water come out. Once water is flowing freely for at least 30 seconds put it back into the pool and throw the other end to the floor. Make sure that the hose in your pool is always higher than the end where the water flows out. So if the floor of your pool is the same height as the other end of the hose, you will have a hard time keeping continuous flow. You can use a taller container so that you know that the end in the pool is a few inches higher than the other end or extend your hose until you can move it into a lower spot. 3. If you are close to a tap water outlet, you can use it to fill the hose with water. I do this a lot since when draining water from the pool cover after a rain. Hope this helps.

@diymanual
@diymanual Месяц назад
@@jenniferwilliams2676 you will probably need to do 2 or 3 passes. Make sure to move slowly so you not disturb the dead algaes on the floor or they will get mixed into the water again. When you lift up the container, you want to put it back down to a spot that is already clean then move it slowly onto the spots that you wanted to clean. Also, you can swirl the water around after your next pass creating like a tornado effect. The next day you will see most of the dead algae in one place towards the center. Making it easier to remove the rest.

Not sure how it would work? What happens to the dirty water? It gets pumped out the other side However, you did mention that if the vacuum stops, you need to put water back in Wouldn't that make a lot of the dead algae return into the pool at the container end? 🤔 Wondering Thanks 😊

When the vacuum stops, simply redo the siphoning procedure 2:35. You can't return the dirty water back in as it already went to waste. Thanks for watching.

@diymanual
@diymanual 11 месяцев назад
You mean just vacuum the water instead of using gravity? For me... 1. Shop Vac will vacuum water faster so you will need to empty out your vacuum multiple times. 2. Priming hose using the return will only take about 30 seconds. Not sure how long will it take to take the vacuum out of the storage, plug it in and set it up then cleaning it up after. 3. Not everyone will have a shop vac. But anyway, I am just sharing the idea and you can use it as is or modify it depending on your need or preference. There is another comment here that says he use similar technique but instead of letting the water go to waste, he uses a pump to transfer the water to a large container then put most of the water back into the pool once the dirt settles to the bottom. Thanks for sharing your idea. Others might find it better in their situation.

I have not tried a bigger container. But I believe you can go a little bigger like the tub of a cool whip. Anything bigger will probably reduce the effectiveness because the garden hose can only suck so much water. If you are talking about a larger hose then yes it will make it faster but you will be wasting more water.

Do you just have cloudy water or do you have dead algae at the floor of your pool? If you have dust and dead algae at the bottom of the pool you can use this method. If you have cloudy water, you may have an algae bloom or a high PH issue. You can check this list of videos and see which one fits your need. ru-vid.com/group/PL_2zbWlUD8pnBmQEwh16YFeY-h2NW2s4G

What if you just hooked up the garden hose to where the pull sucks in the water?
@diymanual
@diymanual 11 месяцев назад
You mean, just suction the dead algae to filter instead of letting the water go to waste? Your filter will get clogged easily and it could burn your pump if it builds too much pressure. You don't really want this going into your filter. Now, if you have a filter that lets you filter to waste then that will work but then you will be wasting a lot more water doing it this way as your filter can pump hundreds to thousands of gallon per hour compare to gravity suction.

To avoid algae problem you will need to keep the chlorine level above 1 ppm. For the cover, I used a large tarp in this pool. My new pool comes with the fitted black vinyl cover. For some reason it wouldn't work for me when putting other end of hose at the water outlet
@diymanual
@diymanual 15 дней назад
Sorry, I said it wrong. You put it in the inlet. The side where the water goes back into the pool. If that doesn't work, you can also start it with the water faucet. The goal here is to fill the hose with water. Also, make sure that your hose does not have any fold or kink and do not use the as seen on TV flex or stretchable hoses. There should be continuous water flow for it to work so if you have any fold or air gap inside the hose it will stop the siphoning action. Hope this helps.

🙄This can be done more simply by using a regular pool vacuum and set your filter to “Waste” or “Backwash” before vacuuming!
@diymanual
@diymanual 10 месяцев назад
That is correct but not all above ground pool owners have that option. Above ground pool usually comes with a small filter unit and if you decide to attach a vacuum to it, it will clog your filter really quick. Also, a sand filter won't really capture the dead algae so you will need to vacuum to waste which will waste a lot more water than just using a gravity.
@bee2333
@bee2333 11 месяцев назад
Just buy a pool vacuum
@diymanual
@diymanual 11 месяцев назад
Most above ground pool owner will not have this option. You will need a pump that will let you vacuum to waste and that will waste a lot more water than just using the gravity method. Most (sand filter) pump that will let you vacuum to waste will at least suck out 1,500 gph compare to less than 100 gph using this method. Also, if you are not aware most vacuum you will find for above ground pool uses the return side to propel the vacuum, garden hose or robot vacuum are only good for catching larger debris like leaves and bugs and will not catch small particles like dead algae. They will just mix the dead algae back into the water.
@bettya.krohmalney3640
@bettya.krohmalney3640 Год назад
Now you need to replace the water that got sucked out! Why not just use a regular vacuum for pools??? Lol
@diymanual
@diymanual Год назад
Thanks for the comment. Not all above ground pool owner have that option. The dead algae's are microscopic in size and if you are simply using a jet type vacuum it will simply push the dead algae's back up into the water. Some of them will be sucked by the filter but most of them will just go back down to the floor. Also, if you have a suction type vacuum and had a sand filter, you will need to use the vacuum to waste feature which waste a lot more water. If you use a DE or paper filter, you will need to keep cleaning it as the dead algae will clog your filter quickly and possibly ruin your pump.

Because those types of vacuums are expensive. A regular hose vacuum is great at cleaning up leaves, and bigger sediment, but anyone who has had algae, knows that it is pain to get out. The particles are too fine, and just blow back into the pool. I'd rather replace some water, over fighting that mess everytime.
