I too held a private pilots licence. Too expensive flying now, so had to give it up. Funny though, when you fly full size planes, the temptation is to fly low to get that great photo! When dronies start flying they want to see how high they can get it!! Both temptations must be resisted! Much prefer flying the drone now! Thanks for your comment! 👌

It's a great hobby! I don't know what your budget is, but I can certainly recommend the Mavic series drones from DJI. You'll also need to factor in at least 3rd party insurance (not expensive). Depending on the weight of the drone you will need to sit an online Drone Code test with the Civil Aviation Authority and register the drone with them. Don't let that put you off though it's all quite straight forward. TIP: A GPS guided drone is much easier to fly than one without. Pleased you're inspired!

​@@jpdronography1 I've jumped on the bottom of the mavic ladder with a Mavic Mini! My budget doesn't stretch much more than that I'm afraid so will be very wary of breezes, but at only 249g it's less restrictive... and no license required! Limited to the car park at work until this lockdown eases, but can't wait to explore the abundance of amazing places we have locally and see what they look like from above!

@@lurch003 Good choice to start with. Hope you have lots of fun with it. I'd still recommend joining British Model Flying Association or FPV UK as this will cover you for accidental damage or injury to 3rd parties for a year for just £15. Hopefully nothing like that will happen, but if it does, you know you're covered if you're sued. Look forward to see your videos in future.

Never mind It'll make for great up-market housing soon. Instead of knocking it down they should have changed fuel type. What's really gruelling is that the developer that bought the land was supposed to put this to its new use many years ago. Instead, they built a token few homes then ceased further development in a speculative move to let the land grow higher and higher in price. That's why there's 'dead end' roads leading into the site that serve no purpose, to circumnavigate planning rules. Those roads 'are an intent to develop' gesture but not what their real plan was. The council have now stepped in to force them to comply with their contractual obligations, and It was looking like the land was about to be compulsory purchased back to the council. Funny how the developer suddenly backed down! This is my understanding of what's happened here.

@@jpdronography1 Did not something similar happen at the site now occupied by Sainsbury's, where the old feed mills were they built flats with some ransom homes for social housing? I seem to remember some were left empty for a long time, they did have some nice views of the harbour, I couldn't find out the outcome after we moved away.

I think you're referring to what is known as the Baiter park housing development. If so, they've all sold and have been inhabited for a long time now. There was some controversy about these as it's reported that they've been built on Bubonic plague burial grounds, as I recall! Thanks for your comment.

@@jpdronography1 I worked on the trains for 31yrs after driving for Wilts & Dorset and was told that the ground on the old gas works sites is contaminated because of that. Never heard anything about bubonic plague although I have heard it can be a problem in other areas.

Yes, the gas works was also a factor, I can just about remember them still in place.

The drone used was a DJI Mavic Pro 2 Zoom.

@@jpdronography1 And how did you zoom in your shots?

@@renegoad8181 The drone controller has a thumb wheel control you use to zoom in and out. It isn't particularly powerful only about 4x I think, but it's very useful for getting close up shots without having to fly the drone illegally close to buildings or people. As far as I know it's the only drone available with this feature. Hope this helps.

@@renegoad8181 No, I don't think the Phantom's have a zoom lens. Mavic zoom is the only one I know of that has this capability.
