Poole Twin Sails Lift Bridge, Poole, Dorset.
Location: Twin Sails Bridge, Poole
Date Filmed: 06-04-2017
The bridge itself is very unique. It doesn't look like a typical drawbridge at all. The road is cut at an angle so instead, two triangles of road lift instead of two rectangles of road, thus making it look like two sails.
Thanks For Watching!

We need these kinds of barriers here in the US. What we have is so inadequate with only a simple arm blocking each direction of traffic.
@YukiGersaniba
@YukiGersaniba Год назад
If you’re on about level crossings: some of ours have half-barriers (blocking only one side of the road) because they’re automatic level crossings. As there is basically no one watching the crossing, the other side isn’t blocked to allow oncoming traffic to escape the crossing. If you’re on about swing bridges: yeah, all entry/exit roads will have barriers.
@cliffb2454

It was once shut in the upright position for about a month or two to the point where the foundations had started sinking into the sand because of the weight of the bridge on itself. The Poole bridge also, (the green one) is sometimes shut but that one is mostly barrier issues

Curious American here, what's the purpose behind the way it's designed to split? Just for looks?
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel 3 года назад
Yeah, mostly for aesthetic looks and architectural design, and to function as a lift bridge. The two triangular road spans are made to look like two boat sails, hence the name twin sails bridge.

Yeah it is quite cool to watch. I don't think its under any maintenance closures at the moment. It has had quite a few maintenance jobs over the last few years but I don't think its had any recently.

Excellent catch! I think I may try to catch a raise at this one next time I am in Poole (which will be some time in the new year) - Could you tell it was going to raise when you were there? (Were there vessels waiting to pass as I hear that it only opens on the half hour or when it is needed?)
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel

Thanks mate 😎 It's a very nice bridge to visit and film. At the time of filming, a special lifting schedule was in use as the main Poole bridge was closed for maintenance and I filmed it on the hour. I do not know if there's a schedule in use now or its on request. Check the Borough of Poole website for information as that's where I found out when I went 👍

OK tell me, This? Why are the crossing signs with the lights are not the same as all railroad crossing? And also.. Why are the barriers behind them?
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel 6 лет назад
Bridges are not the same as typical level crossings. Bridges will usually have different lights, barriers and alarms. The lights, barriers and alarms are attached to these silver posts, and the bridge opens as two triangles.

There's a new timetable of the Twin Sails Bridge listing all the openings. I was at the bridge for the 14:30 opening and it DID open. You can see the timetable here: www.poole.gov.uk/transport-and-streets/roads-highways-and-pavements/poole-harbour-bridge-lifting-times/ Its a pretty cool bridge to record though. And Thanks.

1:47 I've never seen a bridge raise like that before! 4:32 so he alarms go back on when the barriers raise too! Are level crossing style barriers and lights common on British drawbridges?
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel 7 лет назад
This bridge is very modern and a great piece of architecture. It's not like the usual drawbridge you come across. The alarms come back on as a safety precaution that the barriers are about to raise. This isn't really implemented on level crossings as level crossings aren't as busy. Drawbridges/Swing bridges and level crossings both use wigwags (the red/white bordered flashing lights) to stop traffic and pedestrians. Most barriers are the same on level crossings but moving bridges use barriers made by a different company (as different companies offer cheaper barrier systems).
