The trick shot done in the movie "Poolhall Junkies". The white ball is in contact with the 9 ball and both balls are in contact with the cussion "edge". The aim is to drop the 9 ball into the middle pocket "hole".
when christopher walken makes that shot the reactions from the other actors are authentic. the story behind this is they had time set aside for christopher to have to make multiple attempts to make the shot. he actually got it the very first time .so when "johnny" in the background does the slow clap. the reaction is shock that walken got it right away . ....and walken never breaks character and just plays it off. brilliant scene . i know this because i've watched the dvd with the director's comments and that was what he said actually happened during filming the movie
christopher walken actually made this on the first try, they werent going to film it at first they were just gunna let him practice a few times, but he told them to record it anyway and he made it. thats why johnny starts laughing and clapping at first then they cut it off really quick.

The director's commentary said that this was Walken's first shot, and it was supposed to be some practice rolls while they were blocking the scene. Nobody was standing where they were supposed to be in the final shot. They tried recreating the scene but couldn't, so they reblocked the scene to match the positions everyone was standing in during the test shot. Basically they got a one a million first take without even trying.

@@w0mblemania I suppose in your mind that was your “gochya” moment?? it’s called a trick shot. Since you don’t know what a trick shot is I’ll explain. A trick shot can be a shot that’s set up in a way where the balls are positioned to go in the pockets with relative ease. With basic knowledge of high school geometry and a decent cue stroke you can execute these shots. To the untrained eye it looks fantastic but the player knows it’s simplicity. There are videos of professionals at trick shot exhibitions setting up the balls then getting a random 10 yr old kid from the crowd to complete the trick because it is literally that easy. I have done this trick shot on my pool table and it took a couple tries. Any shot you can do in a couple tries is nothing special. Anything else? Btw there are “how to tie a double knot” videos on RU-vid I’m sure you’ll be amazed.
trivia about this movie. The lead actor, Mars Callahan, had spent his youth hustling pool. He wrote, directed, starred in and hired Chris Walken, Chaz Palmeterri and Ricky Schroder. The cast played pool for 3 weeks before shooting and Ricky and Mars are great shots. Mars wanted the actors to make their own shots on film. If you watch closely, you can see very few shots where you cannot see the actor shoot it. Mars missed this shot on the first try in filming but made it on the second try.
Best part is, Walken wasn't sure he'd ever get the shot and they thought they'd be shooting it for a while. Just after he was taught it, he asked the director to shoot his very first practice shot. Hence his shocked reaction, and the amusement of everyone else.

It is a great pool flick although the acting is far from the best by many in it. Walken and Palminteri are fantastic as usual. When it comes to pool though it does what could be done in The Hustler and Color of Money. In those films most of the shots are filmed up close, with the exception of Gleason who really was an excellent player. In this film the shots are often taken one after another with a long continuous take. Watch the film with the commentary, it is worth it.
that's what i was just telling them. You can actually do this with around 8 hours of solid non stop practice i found it funny that they portrayed such an easy trick shot to be an impossibility and of all things PUTS A FUCKING LAWYER JOB ON THE LINE AS THE ANTE LOL i mean, what a dumb lawyer do you need to be if you can be fooled by this one that's as stupid as perfectly lining up 8 balls directly in front of a hole perfectly lined up dead straight and close together with the first ball literally 5 cm from the hole then saying to someone i bet you i can sink the last ball by hitting the first ball LOL
One of if not the best pool movies of all time I really wish the company that owns the rights would let up and let it stream instead of keeping it on DVD only and not making anymore copies crazy
Now I love the game of pool more than most people, but I have to say that this movie was just terrible, and did absolutely no justice to the sport. The acting was sub-par (with the exception of Christopher Walken), the script was garbage, and most of the players in the movie couldn't even pass as decent since they don't even know how to hold the cue.

Nah, if you know what you are doing it's not bad at all. Made it on the first try today but my girl missed it so I tried again and made it again but scratched, too. It's not like I practice it or anything either. But... I wouldn't want to have to make it on the fly against a Benz , though.
Oh btw funny how no-one mentioned this isnt 9ball, its 8ball and thats why he took the shot into the side (albeit a scratch would result in a instant loss...) Look at the original shot, 0:05 there is 4 stripped balls (believe the 10, 12, 14, 15) on the table and hes shooting the 8....

SHIT ! Last year, I saw a story from an English Composition Professor, he was telling how almost half his students didn't know how to spell or structure sentences. He graded the papers and students went over his head to complain about all the red marks and his comments. Nothing horrendous, but they were offended at him for actually doing his job, he said some of the students didn't even have the skills of a sixth grader. So much for No Child Left Behind program, Great Job Teacher Union.
So, "pool Hall Junkies" is a poor mans copy of that classic "The Hustler" Even the dialog here is the same "You couldn't make that shot again in a million years" right out of the opening sequence of the Hustler. The shot is cool, the movie is not.
A shot like this came up in a game for me once, the balls were touching leading the 8 away from the corner pocket, but I had seen this movie and figured I'd give it a go. Once I lined up the way I had to my opponent was confused asking me to state again which pocket so I did and took the shot plop goes the 8 off the kick. Two hands though lol.
This is similar to "Why Sigourney Weaver Is The Shit". Walken makes the shot on the first try and everyone starts clapping. When Sigourney Weaver did her backhand nothing-but-net freethrow everyone on the set broke character and started clapping. Sort of cool really.
look at the keys 2:31, then look at the keys at 2:42 different positions, he probably missed in the first try while filming, but that was a fucking great shot
I miss the days of running tables. They say it's like riding a bike, but every time I get down on a table these days the green looks soo long, that and the glasses I have to wear now get in my way. Never seen that much money on the table, but I've walked away with hundreds of dollars and $1k pool cues. There's another hustler movie, I can't remember the name. But, it really catches a real life feel of what it's like growing up poor and running the tables. Last game I played I lost $500 and my first Mcdermott pool cue, gifted to me by my girlfriend of several years at the time. I felt as though I had killed someone by making that deal and losing that stick. If you think you're bad, there's always someone out there more bad. Be careful of what you bet, always be prepared to lose it. I gave that guy one shot when I choked on the 9 ball. It was his first shot of the game, and his last.

I'm more interested in a shot that was shown as a very brief clip. I'm not sure it's legal -- kinda looks like a "push stroke.". The CB and 8B were frozen together, out vertically from the cushion, just a short distance from the corner pocket. The CB was "pushed, with a twist to the left, and BOTH balls travelled together, sideways (spinning, too), until the 8B went into the pocket. Love this clip, not sure why I never watched this movie. I shot for years. For a shooter this is not a hard shot if it's close to the pocket but the farther away you get, like this shot, takes more practice. But, it's one of the most beautiful shots. Ever. Seems impossible at first. Now that frozen ball bank shot by Paul Newman in The Hustler, that is a much harder shot to get right. Damn hard. I moved to Phoenix when I was 18. I got a job,etc..For my 19th birthday (legal drinking age) my friend Francisco took me out for my 1st legal drinks. We went to a biker bar with go go girls. We were in back playing pool. No one else is there. Two bikers come into the pool room. They loudly start on about how they thought it was a "white man's bar". Francisco was full blood Apache. Waist length hair,cinnamon skin. The bikers want to play for money. I am not a great player and wouldn't play for money. They can't see the smile on Francisco's face. He asks how much money I have. I told him rent was coming due and needed what I had. He assured me we could beat them. He and the loud biker give the money to the bartender. He will judge the game. Francisco doesn't tell me he will be shooting left handed only. The cue will rest on the edge. I break. Biker calls two shots, Misses third. Francisco runs the table.We win. The noise started immediately. We sit at the bar. The bikers tell the bartender that we cheated. The bartender asks if the Indian offered to play one handed,Left handed. Yes,He had. That didn't sound odd,To handicap yourself ?. We got the money. Francisco took alot of over confident college kids and separated them from their lunch money. He liked to joke that he was a math tutor. "Angle of incidence is the angle of refraction". I heard a very nice lecture on Newton,laws of motion and energy. I enjoy the game but I keep my money in my pocket.

Pretty the first time you see it in the movie and every other time you showed somebody but in real life my man it's a damn great way to win the round of drinks with your friends are the random person that says you can't do it and then you must show them up and when you do introduce them to the movie
Anytime somebody you don’t know or just met ( especially in a bar) ) is offering to pull off some really hard feat for money, don’t take the bet. It’s almost a sure thing they have practiced it and have it down pact.

Eight ball. I'm not sure how you got that wrong. But he sure got it right by using top right english. Top partly because only the top part of the ball is strikable and the contact with the eight ball reduces speed. And right partly so when it contacts the opposite rail it will negate the slight deflection from the 8 ball. Otherwise it's a basic principle, using any right english on a straight shot will cause the ball to reflect more right once bouncing off a rail.

A black 8ball kissed just to reach the pocket then cue ball a bit of right spin to be kicked towards the same pocket and pot 8ball... not the impossible shot when balls are placed like on that table...

Ok let me stop at 0:47 the shot is not impossible and its one of the easiest timing shots ever invented. Anyone can make the shot. Why do they act like its the hardest shot in the world and why did they not chose a much harder shot to do? There I finally asked this question after putting it off for years.
