In this video, Poor and in Medical School, I touch on the very real situation of having to rely on student loans and student loan debt for medical students who come from low income backgrounds. Each year many students are accepted into medical school some of which who come from more modest means. So how does one make it work? This is a cautionary tale on borrowing so you don't get into insurmountable debt. I hope to encourage and advise students whose parents can’t help support your medical school education financially. Sometimes it is harder when your poorer and without the guidance, you can get into massive debt. However, this video will not give you advice on how to repay your medical school loans after you graduate, If you find a great video on it mention it in the comments so we can all check it out! Thanks for watching!
My name is Dr. Karen Francois and I am a 5th year Attending physician based out of NY. These stories will chronicle my life with Anesthesia, as an Anesthesiologist and home life with my husband and 3 children. Through these glimpses into my life I hope to inspire and motivate young women or men into seriously considering Anesthesia as a career choice.
I am a Doctor and I was born and raised in the projects in the Bronx, NY and I made it to become a highly respected physician. If I can do it then any one else in my situation can do the same.

Not to mention food, rent, utilities, car note, car insurance, any medical or dental bills, any unforeseen expenses and of course you still have to live your life (shop and travel here and there)...it’s hard out here..

Exactly, Shanarra! I mean basically everything you need to survive while in med school! It’s a necessary evil. The key is to be conscious and conscientious about it. It’s literally an investment into your career and livelihood. The rewards of which aren’t reaped immediately, but will Eventually come. Thanks for watching, also, love your pic!

This is literally what I am struggling with at the moment. The deeper I get into my pre-med journey the more I learn about the cost associated. The only way I could even attend college was to work full time. It's disappointing to because I know if I didn't have to work they way that I did I probably would have a gpa closer to a 3.8-3.9 vs a 3.4- 3.5. All in all I'm still grateful that I am the first in my family to graduate with bachelors but also still trying to pursue medicine even with out the financial support. I'm currently in a career changer post bac and work in a very demanding research position and I'm still facing those same issues and I know if I get in to med school its going to get even worse. I really appreciate this content because I really gives me hope but the transparency also about who I am in the running with.

This is something we all dont talk about enough. I had 4 friends in med school delete themselves because there weren't enough resources. They were trying to drive for uber , grub hub, or become handypeople doing odd jobs all while trying to study 20/7. It is so hard. Meanwhile, our school is a prestigious private school where we had students simultaneously taking private jets to iceland for fall break. Existence is tough, especially in medicine. Make sure this is what you truly want to do before going into it.

Man, I really give it up to youtubers like you who take the time to shine light on the financial part of medical school. Just the process of getting into medicalis so hectic that that tends to slip our minds. Thank you for the reminder to take that into consideration when considering a career in medicine. ❤

Thank you so much for sharing this information and your personal struggles coming from a low income family! As a 4th year med student who also comes from a low-income family, I can relate to some of the difficulties you talked about. I would add an additional layer of difficulty for those of us who come in with pre-existing debt. I started medical school with credit card debt that I amassed trying to do what I felt was right at the time by helping my family during some of our hardest times. Given the $22000-24000 we are expected to live on during this time, I have struggled throughout these 4 years to make it to the next refund check. Additionally, I'm growing increasingly concerned as I'm preparing for residency and learning about the potential of up to 2-3month delay in receiving my first pay check. Most of the anesthesia residency programs are in medium to big cities with sometimes sky high housing prices. Most of my friends are ok because they can ask their parents or SO's for help. I and many of my friends however in no way have the means to support ourselves for 2-3 months without an income. It's frustrating hearing people constantly tell me that it'll all be better once I'm an attending because they fail to acknowledge the difficulties of trying to live now.

All the expenses, the years gone by studying and not working and the salary difference between what you would get if you started and worked in a company for 8 years and the residency salary totals up to about a million. Not sure if becoming a doctor is worth this.

Hi! I was wondering what college did you go to?
@PurpleDog06
@PurpleDog06 3 года назад
I really wanted to go to vet school, which is very similar to medical school in terms of costs, requirements, and length of time. I worked while in undergrad and knew halfway through that I couldn't justify graduating with a quarter of a million dollars of student loan debt. As it is, I have student loan debt from inflated housing costs a decade ago that makes it more difficult to afford housing now or get ahead. The affordability of higher education needs to be addressed, especially for jobs that are entirely essential to society that require such a high level of education.

In addition to federal loans, I took out private loans offered by my institution at a low interest rate to subsidize my mortgage while in school. Again, that was a necessity for me, but if you don't need it, try to only borrow the minimum.
