A webinar on the connection between poor bone health and celiac disease presented as part of Celiac Awareness Month. The CCA partnered with Osteoporosis Canada, the go-to experts in all bone health matters, to prepare and present this webinar.
The first speaker is Dr. Justine Turner, a pediatric gastroenterologist and associate professor at the University of Alberta. She is also an advisor on the CCA’s Professional Advisory Council. Dr. Turner’s research interests include infant and adolescent nutrition, and the effect of chronic gastrointestinal diseases on nutrition. She is a medical lead for the Multidisciplinary Pediatric Celiac Disease Clinic and the Pediatric Home Nutrition Support Program at Stollery Children’s Hospital Edmonton. She is a founding member of the North American Society for the Study of Celiac Disease and is pleased to have been the Medical Advisor for the Edmonton Chapter of the CCA since 2005.
Also presenting is Shelly Hagen, a Registered Dietitian and Health Educator in the Women’s Wellness Program at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. She leads menopause and osteoporosis group education sessions, and works one-on-one with patients to make well informed health decisions concerning menopause and osteoporosis management. Shelly has previous work experience as office coordinator for the Osteoporosis Society of Canada, Alberta Chapter. She also worked briefly as a nutrition educator for the Dairy Nutrition Council of Alberta, and she spent several years working as a regional public health nutritionist- providing a variety of nutrition services to residents living in the northwest Saskatchewan. Shelly is a member of Osteoporosis Canada’s Scientific Advisory Council.
