Still a fan of Charlie Kunz' stride rendition, Paul Weston’s arrangement on Music for Romancing, Jerry Vale treatment of the tune, Vic Hammett’s Wurlitzer cover, Sinatra & The Duke's take on it from the self-same year, and the one Doc Severinsen & Henry Mancini banged out for Brass On Ivory... and now this to add to my favorite takes on this dear old tune. Chet Baker reincarnated in the body of a woman. Not to take anything from Ms. Motis, but no denying the influence. A hundred times more fun watching and listening to her than Chet. That's due, I'd say, to her being both a woman and somehow more wholesome. And she swings.

Why do they keep the camera on the bassist for the first six bars of her solo>? And there are some melodic/harmonic clashes, particularly from bar 12 on (2nd. half of the tune). In music, particularly when harmonizing a tune (i.e. arranging), there's something called "melodic consideration." In other words, the melody rules and one should not use chords that might clash with it. In today's day and age it seems to be a lost art. Listen to the Tony Bennett version. It might be enlightening.

No one can top the great voice and version of Sarah Vaughn.
