Sadly, the Quidzel device is no longer available (as of 2022) - so unless you get a European steering wheel, and code the missing TJA options, you're out of luck - oh well.
I and some other folks on the i3 Coding Discord were working on a DIY (and open source) module to replace the function of that device... For a fraction of the cost, too. Already working in my car.
Have an '15 i3 and turning in 2 months for the newer model with adaptive control... did the online hack for REX control, am, etc. On mine And will be all over this. AWESOME information!! 🖖
I am going to assume that the lane departure would require the car to have mounted side cams. The models that have the self parking and have the side cams to enable that feature are probably the cars that would dolmen departure assist. Without those cams I am assuming it won't work. I drive a 2020 BMW i3s and the extended fenders eliminated the side coms so none of the i3s models can do self parking. So, the project you worked on could probably do the what's called adaptive cruise control but in my case it won't do lane departure. My car actually does have adaptive cruise control so this would not get me anywhere.
Very cool! A few questions: Can you still enable ACC alone or does this replace it? What happens if you increase the desired speed above 40 (or 45, whatever the limit is for TJA)? Does it switch to ACC at that point, or turn off? Also, how do you enable it in the first place? Thanks for the info. Very interested in this!
ACC can be used like normal, TJA (lane keeping at lower speed) just when you want it. Above the mph set point it drops lane keeping and continues with ACC only. It's enabled by pressing the button that used to increase the distance to car in front of you while using ACC. Now the 'get closer' button round robins to the following distance you'd like. Hope that helps.
I'm in the UK and have this feature but it's set at 35mph motorway only. Could you show a tutorial on esys to up the speed limit and for use on other roads. Thanks
Awesome video again! I've got a 2014 i3 REX and love it. I watched your other video on extending the range and had a try at it, got the cable and software but wasn't able to find my laptop and I'm not really a coder but I will figure it out eventually!
@Jacob ....Hey there’s an app for it only $25 in a App Store , no coddling Necessary , here’s a video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E-yur5JK5iE.html
@@sergeyyevtukh388 Bimmer code can't enable Traffic Jam Assist. Its great if you're interested in all the other stuff that can be tweaked on your BMW though :)
Would be a Dream! Reason for BMW was the need for a compact car which is not available by Tesla, but the missing AP in the BMW or this "pour man" is really no longer accaptable in 2020! Please community help me with Open Pilot!
I don’t think that I’ll happen because they use flex ray instead of can bus. That is what I heard. They might eventually get flex ray support. But in my Sonata OpenPilot is amazing.
Different question on coding and amp install... My Harman/Kardon amp overheated and I wanted to replace it. I found a Mini Cooper Amp with same model number. Do I need to program it or do you think it will update when I install it? I have the the AutoPhix 7910 to update if needed. I made the purchase when I replaced my 12v Battery. Thanks!
This is great. Thanks for posting this. Might you know what starting model year i3 would have these features? ACC and Park Assist? Im starting look at off-lease units. Thanks!
All years had these as options. Just make sure the VIN you get has ACC and Park Assist if you want to play along at home. Also the ReX is nice if your budget allows.
Would this work if my i3 only has cruise control but not self-parking? If so, any shop you know or recommend to get it installed in the south bay area? Thanks and great video!
I wouldn't. It would pinball between the two lane markings and be too jerky. I don't think they ever planned or designed it for those speeds, both the software and the power steering hardware. As it is, most of my driving is on straight stretches and I disengage over 45mph. Hope that helps.
Does this mean it can be used everywhere or only highways? In Germany, we can only use it in the highway or freeway, but only when you are in stop and go traffic. I would be interested if you can use this also in the city and not just the autobahn.
Hi you said find someone to code this and throw him some cash to do it. Any ideas where to look or who to look for? I'm pretty sure you can role up to the bmw dealership and have them do it.
Question - when you come to a full stop with TJA enabled, does TJA time out after 5 seconds or so like adaptive cruise does or will it resume driving after any amount of time stopped?
Julian, is there someone around San Francisco who can do the sensor install/software hack? I am thinking of buying a 2017 and would want to have it done as soon as possible-
Hi! Why do you think euro i3 has steering wheel with the sensor? ETK says there are the same steering wheels for EU and US i3. Do you have both S5ARA and S5ATA options via VIN decoder?
The 'sensor' could be some torque being applied to the EPAS but I thought I read somewhere that capacitive touch was being utilized. I could be wrong. Not sure about the S5ARA/S5ATA options, I'd have to look it up.
So I bought the Quidzel TJA module. Downloaded E-sys 3.28 and PSdZData lite. When I plug it in it pulls the VIN from the car in E-sys. But it won’t connect within e-sys like it doesn’t see the PSdZData even though it is in the data folder. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions? Would you be able to code it remotely through team viewer for a fee?
Good morning Julian. I own a bmw i3 94ah from 03/2017. I already have the parallel automatic parking function and normal cruise control. Do you think it is possible to install the cable that you use to enable the adaptive cruise control function with traffic jam function on my bmw?
Does the i3 have a radar module? I’m trying see if this can be added to a 2015 750i with Active Cruise. That mode car has ACC without radar, and it appears to only use the KAWAS camera. I’ve seen it coded on older 750s (there’s a 2012 on RU-vid) but I’m not sure if it is predicated on there being a radar sensor.
GREAT VIDEO! Do you have to have ACC for this to work? I have an i3 without ACC. Looking for someone in Los Angeles to help code my i3 if anyone is out there :)
I think ACC uses a KAFAS camera also needed by TJA. From what I read it's possible to retrofit but involves replacing the windshield for some reason. Was considering this myself until I found out about the windshield part - I think I'll just stick with manually driving for now :)
I set all but, couple moth ago I roll back my codes i lost some functionality on it. It does not show the wheel when engaged and does not bip when disengage. how do I code it back using BIMMER?
Thank you for sharing, I want to do the same but my i3s come with adaptive cruise control so camera and sensors on both bumpers but dos not have the self parking, the self parking option was free to add but somehow it was not chosen! Now I wonder if there is a motor to steer? Is there is a way to validate that?
Follow some of the links in the description. There is a way to decode your VIN or otherwise look at the codes in your build sheet. If all else fails, buy one with all the options :)
Quidzel says nothing on their website & video about needing the parking assist feature. It only says the 5AT (ACC) is required. What limitations would it have without the parking assist?
any shop you can recommend in Phoenix, AZ? I already have the part...just need the coding done...I was told it doesn't work on a Mac and that's what im using....
I would try searching in the reddit sub page for i3. Shoudl be able to find a shop. Sometimes folks get together on the weekend to do a round of coding. Good luck! You're going to love the feature.
I really want to get this, it's one of the reasons I bought the car in the first place, but the programming is intimidating, and I'm a software engineer. Please tell me it's easier than I think it is. I assume I would need a native (not virtual) Windows computer for this?
Will need native and modern (ram and CPU limitations if memory serves). It's easy if you can read. Start by coding something low risk like chimes or keyfob behavior then branch out. Most of the time you're just tweaking something similar to a plist for settings and perimeters. You got this!
Hey! Do you mind doing a video on a DIY-coding video for installing the TJA Quidzel module? Or does anyone know where I can find details on coding the module?
What is the point of such system limited to 60km/h??? Also, AP does do more than just what you explained. And an i3 is actually more expensive than a Tesla so kind of funny title!
I'm not sure what feature gets you a steering column that can take commands to turn the wheel, I figure it's the park assist. May be no retrofit needed, get under the hood and check some part numbers :)
The only requirement is option code 5AT. To get 5AT in the U.S.A., you must have the Technology package (also includes the larger iDrive screen). If you have active cruise control (set the distance you want to follow, stop and go), then you can add TJA. My car does not have park assist but does have the Technology package and this mod works great!
@@DanielZajic That is correct, my i3 did not have the park assist package, but did have the Tech package (which includes the front facing camera and other associated electronics).
No problems at all. Lane keeping is best under 50 mph, any faster and it get jerky so best to keep it set low and take back control at higher speeds. This upgrade is highly recommended for the stop&go traffic on 101 :)
ironic that you are talking about auto pilot and pass a Tesla at 4:20 lol. And another Tesla at 6:21 Nice work installing. Might be installing this too on mine. Does your car have the front sensors in the bumber to do this? Because mine does not.
Throw a rock and you'll hit a Tesla in the Bay Area :) I've got the camera in the windshield, sensors in the bumper are ultrasonic and just used for parking in the i3. Can you do adaptive cruise control and self parking in your i3? Rex or BEV?
Wish I could but my hourly rate is too high. Confident there has to be a place that will code your BMW in the Bay Area. You’d just need to call ahead and see if they’ve done the mod before.
I think you can get that without coding. If you have the ability to play music from your iPhone via USB you can download the accompanying GoPro iphone app and connect it all up. The app (phone side and car side) are for recording track-day type runs with telemetry and all that jazz. You may have to enable the office features or advance bluetooth, I don't remember.
Not the software tweaks but the lane keeping dongle featured will most likely void your warranty for anything related to its addition. Best to wait until your warranty expires.
Very cool! Yes, I would be quite litigious if someone was over confident -- yet incompetent-- modifying their vehicle to bypass a safety feature, especially if I'm in a priceless classic car and get severely injured. It does seem like a fantastic feature for interstate stop-and-go nuisance situations. Thanks for the videos, cheers!!
marisol puricelli hijacked the button on the left side that used to increase the distance between you and the car in front. The button to decrease now round Robbins to allow all positions.
@@CrAzYDr1veR Here in The States, the public is unsure about the car being electric and it's expensive when bought new. So sales of used i3s are slow and the price reflects that. A new one can go for $58,000 USD.... 2 years later it's sold for $17k
In US they are really cheap. In Germany I still paid half of the price of a new one for a three year old, which was 26k EUR. Nevertheless I like the car very much.
Tesla autopilot does FAR more than this. it monitors road and traffic conditions all around, reads street signs, and it IS capable of self driving (it's just turned off right now for our market). The TESLA BETA that sales is currently testing is actually full GPS location setting, and complete self driving to that destination. I like the I3 as well, but you're kidding yourself if you think you have 40% of autopilot's functionality. And you are definitely wrong in your description of what autopilot is.
Show us where you can buy a Tesla for $17k that does all you list above? Note that you wrote your comment a year after this was first published, and that Tesla's AP was much less capable then as well. BMW's camera could read speed limit signs, which Tesla couldn't do for the longest time (they were just using GPS/map info, and that was often wrong; whenever there is road construction, e.g.). You can certainly argue over percentages of capabilities, but if you purely look at the use case described ("autopilot" in stop-and go traffic"), what "FAR more" is Tesla proving in terms of that experience?
lol rule followers in the eu? you think that's why we're "less litigious"? nah son, it's because we in the civilised world don't instantly want to blame someone else for our own fuck ups XD
If you spent $58,000 on one of these cars, 300 is a small part of your world. If you just picked a used i3 for $15,000... it's the best bang-for-the-buck upgrade one can do.
