I love fish- especially crab and lobster but it's so dang expensive! But here's an easy trick to turn a piece of white fish, like cod or halibut, into a 5 star dining experience. We think you'll enjoy this quick and easy fish recipe.
Poor Man's Lobster
Cod or Halibut filets, thawed if frozen
1/2 Lemon
1 cup sugar
lemon pepper, dill seed, melted butter (for serving)
1. Fill a large pot about 1/2 to 3/4 full of water and bring to a boil.
2. Add in half a lemon, cut into 2 pieces and the sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
Allow the mixture to come back to a boil for a couple minutes.
3. Cut the fish into about 1-inch chunks and add to the boiling water. Do not stir!
4. When the fish begin bobbing and float to the top, strain them out and set on a paper towel or wire rack.
5. Sprinkle with lemon, lemon pepper and/or dill seed (optional). Dip in butter- serve warm.

I grew up near the ocean in Maine. My dad used to pick up lobster on the way home from work a lot because it was cheaper than steak (years ago). I actually used to complain about having it so often because it’s not easy to eat and you smell like low tide for hours after. Now that I live in the south, I dream about lobster. I’m going back home next week, and my dad still likes lobster at least once a week.

I am vision impaired, almost totally blind, and I love to cook. My husband and I both love lobster and crab. Thank you so much for this recipe. I also want to thank you for doing an excellent verbal description along with this recipe. I can’t tell you how many food videos on RU-vid I cannot access because they are all music and no talk. I have subscribed to your channel because I appreciate the way you did your video with talking along with the pictures. Not all cooks can see, and I wish the other food video makers would think of this when they put up their videos on RU-vid. I wonder if I can very gently use the back of a spoon to touch the top of the water and tell whether the fish pieces have come up to the top. I will have to try that.

Barbara: Here's a possibility: First, establish how long it takes for the fish to float. If you use the same amount/initial-temperature of fish and same amount of boiling water each time, it should be done when the timer goes "ding!". Secondly, a steamer basket and appropriate-diameter pot should simplify getting all that fishy goodness out of the boiling water; an attached piece of stiff wire could serve as an extended handle to lift the basket out of the boiling water. I'll leave the challenge of handling the hot fish chunks up to you as I have run out of ideas. 🙂 Good luck! I wish you much fishy eating!

I live near the ocean and I eat a lot of seafood. I was surfing youtube and came across this video. I wondered how this would compare to real crab or lobster, and was skeptical, to say the least. I went to the store and picked out 4 pounds of Haddock, which has a thick firm white meat. We followed your instructions and cooked one of the filets to try before cooking the others. Needless to say, the taste was incredible and we turned around and cooked all the fish right then. The wife and I sat there stunned and amazed at the taste and we ate all four pounds in one sitting. It was absolutely amazing, thanks for the recipe. This will save me tons of money as we have had a habit of spending $100 at a time for crab legs. I will still eat the crab, but now I don't need to buy as much.

Try buying "imitation crab" in vacuum packs (cooked & prepped already, looking like crab/lobster meat) It is so CHEAP, and has the sweet taste & perfect texture of crab or lobster claws. It is ready to eat as is, cold, or used in any recipe calling for crab/lobster meat. It is used a lot in Japanese cooking, and called "surimi". You will be amazed at the wonderful taste/texture of this inexpensive food!!!
@karenkaneshiro9861
@karenkaneshiro9861 5 лет назад
Also the 'imitation crab' (basically pollock, mixed with egg white, sugar, & bits of other fish & shellfish, formed into a paste & cooked & served cold or can be cooked) is called not only "surimi" in Japanese stores, but "Kamaboko". Kamaboko is almost always the "crab" used in making "California Sushi", which uses "crab" & avocodo as the main sushi filling. Imitation crab is much cheaper than the real thing, & I actually prefer it to real crab/lobster! So next time you see/eat California sushi rolls, know you are likely eating pressed & formed pollock with other seafood/shellfish for flavor, & other binding agents. "Imitation" does not always mean the taste is sub-par compared to the 'real' thing.
@karenkaneshiro9861
@karenkaneshiro9861 5 лет назад
@@scientifico Imitation crab, also known as surimi or kamaboko in Japanese stores, has the taste & texture & appearance of real lobster (claw meat) & crab. It is the 'crab' used in classic "California Sushi" which usually has this 'crab' & avocado & cucumber as the sushi filling. It is very popular in sushi restaurants, & many who do not like sushi actually find "California rolls" to be delicious! (Pollock is the main fish used to make the 'imitation crab".) It is usually very cheap, & already cooked, so can be eaten as is, or used in any recipe calling for use of crab or lobster, usually.)

Used to be an Assistant Seafood Manager before I joined the Army. Monkfish was called “Poor Man’s Lobster” due to its consistency when cooked. A very meaty fish. Tasty. Makes great fish and chips. Highly suggest trying it for those who haven’t. Very unpleasant looking meat until you cook it. There is also a fish called Loche in the North West Territories, Canada. Very similar to Monkfish and excellent fish and chips as well. Saw some other lobster stories from Nova Scotia being posted. Will confirm them to being true. My kinfolk were cattlemen and farmers. We used lobster for fertilizer. That was a practice well into the late 70s. Some of my friends came from fishing families. They were looked down at school for being poor when they brought lobster sandwiches instead of PBJ like everyone else. Great channel. Subbed and liking videos. Looking forward to trying some recipes as I break in a new Lodge skillet.

@metamorphicorder
@metamorphicorder 4 года назад
Hallibut is actually more expensive than lobster depending on how you look at it and how you are buying it. Last time i was selling it halibut was 24$ a pound. Fresh. Lobster tail was about 16 to 20 per pound for a frozen tail. The thing about lobster is that its usually less per pound than halbut but it doesnt fractionalize as well. You can buy a half pound of halibut. Its harder to buy a half pound of lobster. If you find just lobster meat, like someone cleaned a lobster out and sold the meat, that would be really expensive. Lagostino is a good option for that as the taste is really the same. Depends on where you are too Nd fresh vs frozen and what not.

KesselRunHero - well, it’s not quite as easy as that to get a good tasting catfish. Granted, catfish that is “on flavor” as they say in the industry is mighty fine eating when fried up just right in some good corn meal batter. But, catfish caught out of a river or lake is hit and miss. They are bottom feeders and take on the flavor of what they eat. Many catfish taste literally like dirt. Farm raised is best in my view.

We made this for dinner tonight. I don’t know that I’d say it tastes exactly like lobster, but it was very good. It was closer to the flavor of lobster than crab, but I’ll bet if you use a little more sugar then it would be a little closer to the flavor of crab, since crab is sweeter. And another great thing is that it doesn’t make your house smell like fish.

Here's the ultimate version of poor man's lobster. I read this in a magazine back in the seventies and brought home a mess of gar the next time I went deer hunting. It included salt garlic powder and onion powder in addition to the sugar and lemon. It also called for a longer boil. It recommended using a machete and hammer to cut the gar into one inch wheels (clean the guts out after chopping). Boil the wheels still encased in armor. Drain, let cool a little then pop four individual nuggets from each wheel. Serve with lemon and drawn butter or enchilado. I killed a lot of gar after that. That dish was excellent. I no longer eat fresh water fish (mercury)but this reminiscence has me thinking about a gar roundup.

I used 'imitation crab" to make a fantastic thick & creamy chowder! (Main igred.in the 'crab' is pollock, but often in preparing the 'crab' one of the ingredients used in flavoring is a bit of real lobster, clams, shrimp, etc. so be careful if you have allergies to shellfish) The other secret in my chowder was the addition of Philadelphia cream cheese melted into the chowder, which both flavored it & added to the creamy rich texture.

Hi KENT ... I realize this is an OLD VIDEO but maybe you'll get notified & get to read this ... I have 3 things I'd like to let you in on to make this an even better experience ... My late wife being a high quality Restaurant Cook herself , & a True Lobster Fan taught me to treat this just as though it really was Lobster ...1.) Beforehand buy a couple Tea Lite butter warmers .( ceramic tea lite candle holders with removable cups to hold the boiling butter to dip the " LOBSTER " in ) then clarify a couple sticks of butter ....2.) Beforehand , buy a really small crock pot ( personal size , bout 4 to 6 inches across ). Heat it up on high before starting to cook your Faux Lobster ... Once you pull a few pieces out & dry them off throw them into the mini crock pot to stay hot till you're ready to eat them ..3.) Let that butter come to a rolling boil before you start eating & your Faux Lobster will taste just like the real thing ...WARNING ::: You better have cooked up a LOT of FAUX LOBSTER coz if not you're gonna wish you had ......................... Ooooooooiieeeeeee , that stuff is good ...!!!!!🐟🐟🐟🐟🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞
