Movie Review about Poor Things which won four awards during the ceremony, including best actress, best makeup and hairstyling, best production design and best costume design.
Starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
Overview:
#Poorthings directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara, is a mesmerizing cinematic journey that defies conventions. Set against the backdrop of a steampunk Victorian England, this film weaves together elements of science fiction, romance, and dark humor. At its core, “Poor Things” explores themes of identity, love, and the boundaries of scientific experimentation.
Plot Summary: In the heart of Victorian London, medical student Max McCandles becomes entangled in the eccentric world of the brilliant surgeon Godwin Baxter. But it’s not just surgical techniques that intrigue Max; it’s the mysterious Bella Baxter, Godwin’s ward. Bella, a childlike young woman, harbors a secret: her brain was transplanted into an adult body, giving her a second chance at life. As Bella’s intelligence blossoms, she embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery, questioning her existence and the world around her.
Bella Baxter (Emma Stone): Bella, our enigmatic protagonist, is a reanimated corpse-a Frankenstein’s monster of sorts-whose brain once belonged to a pregnant woman named Victoria. Bella’s journey takes her from the confines of Godwin’s laboratory to the bustling streets of London. As she grapples with her newfound consciousness, Bella discovers the pleasures of the flesh, both intellectual and physical.
Duncan Wedderburn (Christopher Abbott): Enter Duncan, the debauched lawyer who sweeps Bella off her feet. Their passionate and tumultuous relationship becomes the catalyst for Bella’s awakening. Together, they embark on a whirlwind adventure across continents, defying societal norms and prejudices. Duncan, too, is drawn to Bella’s uniqueness, and their chemistry crackles on screen.
Themes Explored: “Poor Things” delves into themes that resonate with our own time: equality, liberation, and the pursuit of knowledge. Bella, free from the constraints of her era, becomes a symbol of resilience and empowerment. As she grapples with her identity, Bella stands tall, challenging the status quo and advocating for a world where everyone has a voice.
Visual Splendor: Director Yorgos Lanthimos masterfully captures the steampunk aesthetic, infusing every frame with rich textures, sepia tones, and intricate details. From the cobblestone streets to the grand ballrooms, the film immerses viewers in a bygone era where science and magic collide.
Awards and Accolades: “Poor Things” premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, where it clinched the prestigious Golden Lion. Critics and audiences alike have praised Emma Stone’s transformative performance as Bella. The film’s box office success-grossing over $100 million worldwide-speaks to its universal appeal.

Utterly fantastic movie. There is nothing out there comparable. The great use of set designs, colors, use of diverse camrea lenses, cast, story line is wonderful. If you watch this movie several times the nude scenes fit peefectly. For goodness sake, Bella has the mind of a child as transplanted by God. She undergoes all the normal growth of a child to a budding teen, then adult.

Fantastic film but, honestly, I was put off by the obscene amount of nudity on Emma Stone"s part. Some nudity was necessary to the plot, but the majority was gratuitous and for me it took away from the film.

The movie may be artistically brilliant, but it's empty of humanity. The female Frankenstein here has no heart. The "edgy" director has focused his gaze on Bella's "furious jumping" and does not proceed telling the real story that happens with Bella--outside the bedrooms. It's a tragic flow that borders on paedophilic (no consent from the baby girl as not mentally mature enough) or necrophilic perversion. It's art without the heart. Mary Godwin Shelley woldn't like this director's obsessively one-note "gaze".

Not really. You mean it’s missing sentimentality. It has heart. You’re just not in tuned with it because *you’re* preoccupied with the sex. People must think about sex countless times of the day. A study on CBS health says men think about sex every 38 minutes. Sex is a huge factor in human existence whether you’re having any or not. There’s no problem with the film *using* sexuality to tell a greater story. The story is what would one do if they had no real ties to this world, and no outside influences, or prejudices. Bella doesn’t have parents. She was simply created. Then she learns by doing, not being told. The doctor is there to teach her of words and ideas after she explores. He’s there to help her over obstacles, but outside of that he stays at bay. In fact the people she loved the most in the film stayed at bay and allowed her to have self expression and absolute freedom. That’s all. There’s no need to overreact because you do not like elements of the film. It does have heart, but it does not placate to the average person’s sentimentalities and morality. Boo hoo.
