If you read the book (it is free on Everand, which is an amazing book subscription service--and free for the first month, if I remember correctly), there's even more textual richness in his name and others. Plus more framing devices, and a completely different ending. Definitely worth the read . .. .

Never Let Me Go is one of my all time favorites. If anyone hasn’t already seen it, I’m so jealous, go in blind (the trailer, synopsis etc gives too much away) and be amazed. I still watch it once every year or two. Carey Mulligan’s final monologue is just too good.

I have had so much fun looking all around the Internet at comments about “Poor Things”. Men who say that it’s too feminist and that it’s a man hating film. And then, in contrast, women who are saying it’s exploitative and perverted. It’s been so much fun. Prudes being offended by art is just so twee. 😊

What a fantastic batshit blast! I Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and we got 2 homages this year. Birth/Rebirth being the other. Anyway, this movie is hilarious. And you guys are right, Stone's physicality is awesome. And the dialogue and it's delivery cadence is so fun. This whole movie is bonkers. And what a tremendous tale portraying the coming of age of a woman while at the same time leaving Ruffalo character in hilarious ruin. I feel like I'm saying, "this is my favorite movie of the year" like every other week now. imho 2023 has been an excellent year for film. Especially with social commentary. Oppenheimer. Barbie. Birth/Rebirth. Killers of the Flower Moon. Dream Scenario. American Fiction. Poor Things. Guys, it's been a great year. Awards season is gonna be bonkers. Also, this was an interesting palate cleanser from seeing Aquaman right before it. Ha

Godwins playing God the creator. Bella leaves “gods” heaven after putting the apple on her lips the other one. She has (Envy) of people living in the world and goes and learns about life and the 7 sins. She wants to eat all the pastries (gluttony) then later in the act she comes back to the hotel room from exploring the world and says its “nothing but sugar and violence.” Temperance. The dancing scence she deals with (Anger) wanting to punch the baby. By the end of the scene she learns the virtue meekness having patience with the conversation with the other couple. Carmichaels character teaches her about (Greed) of the world and the struggles of the poor world. Thats when she gives the money away practicing generosity. Learns about (Lust) in the Brothel. She avoids the life of (Sloth) with her husband and decides to do the Diligence and follow in gods path. Her (Pride) is why she leave Godwins in the first place and at the she returns to Gods home having Humility

People say that it’s weird because she’s supposed to be a infant and Kid. But I think people forget that it’s a movie and I think they would cram 30 years in 2hrs instead. I think she mentally developed much quicker than reality. If she didn’t then the scene where she sees the lowest class wouldn’t have affected her as much.

I'd argue that she ends the film as a well-read, sexually-experienced teen. In the scene you referenced, she responds as a child would to the revelation of human suffering and has a child-like solution for it. She does "age" rapidly throughout the film, but she is most definitely a child when she first has sex with the Ruffalo character. Deriving pleasure from sexual contact doesn't make someone an adult, after all. I mean...what adult gets into a trunk just because they're bluntly told to?

If the appeal of this movie is that it's supposed to be offensive to "pearl clutching prudes" because of its "stunning and brave sex positivity," it's probably going to suck. Would this film have any appeal if people you hate weren't criticizing it for whatever reason? Because this director's previous films are basically the avant garde for midwits.

Is it insanity?? @TechnicJunglist I'm not a prude at all but I don't want to to see a baby in a woman's body having sex repeatedly with grown men - the way people love it so much and say its about sexual liberation does seem like its glorifying it, I can't get my head around so many people loving it! The story is horrible. I love disturbing when it's acknowledged it is wrong and disturbing, not seen as positive, it's just so horrible!

The Harry Astley character comes from Dostoyevsky's The Gambler, and in Gray's novel is meant to be disorientating. The Dostoyevsky character is very sympathetic, almost in an Anglophile way, while in Gray's novel it's like a commentary on the moral emptiness of English charm, and the vileness and sadism which underpins the 'upper classes': Perfidious Albion.

I liked this film a lot, but I didn't love it. I thought it was absolutely gorgeous, but I didn't think all of the actors or the editing lived up to the script's comedy. The rhythm of the humor was sometimes very off for me . There were performers and entire exchanges that didn't mine the laugh lines for all they were worth. Also, Mark Ruffalo was doing the most and I didn't think it always worked. As for the two comedians, Jerrod Carmichael was pretty bad and poorly lit in his closeup(they never light Black people properly in movies that aren't about Black people...). Ramy Yourseff was wonderful and he always knew how to deliver the joke. After Emma Stone, he might be my favorite performance.

Mark acted a pure fool and I loved every minute of it. His spiraling while chiding her to not fall in love with him, hilarious (😂) Il loved how as she gained more world intelligence or choice, Ruffalo wants to control her more. There was a brief moment once knowing she has an infant brain in a woman's body it was not lost on me at how extremely pleased Mark is with her to be "dumb & beautiful just for sex" and how it makes him feel like he's TEACHING HER everything. Made me go "they [the writers] were being very honest here, was it intentional? Would Dafoe's character be both the doctor and the monster...in some measure, with him being unaware? If the doctor never abandoned the monster, wouldn't it had always loved him, the same as Dafoe's character loves his father?

Have any of you read the book before watching this film which it’s based on by the Scottish author? Only problem with this film is it’s not set in Glasgow with Scottish actors though not much you can do

The whore house in paris part coulda been ALOT shorter and less detailed. It was cringy. And I lost respect for the character honestly. I found myself warning candles not to marry her.

It was cringy because you’re a prude.

It was a disturbing film that sexualizes the mind of an infant.

I went to see the film based on your review and I sadly didn't love it anywhere near as much as you guys did (I would have given it 3.5/5). Bit disappointed as I thought it would be amazing.

I am happy to announce that my daughter also loved this (24 y.o.). I’m glad she’s into weirdness with a message about women’s liberation lol!

I liked the movie. I think they spend too much time at the whorehouse though and I got the point halfway through and some of the scenes just became excessive. Ending was perfect though. I enjoyed this very whacky movie and glad Emma won an Oscar for it.

I actually liked Jerrod Carmichael character. Keith David could have played that character too.
