This beginner piano / keyboard tutorial in C Major, guides you gradually through 34 steps to learn to play contemporary pop piano. It covers: rhythm, hand independence, syncopation, arpeggios, chord progressions, inversions, extensions, sus chords, relative minor harmony and how to create melodies from ear. It aims to give you a deeper understanding of music so you can freely express yourself on the piano. The beat never stops so you can always play along in the groove!
The aim for this exercise is to work towards effortless mastery throughout the exercises. If it’s too challenging or too easy, please feel free to alter the exercise as you need to. I recommend you consider technique throughout and ensure you are aiming for a feeling of relaxation in your hands. Be careful not to over-practice if you are feeling tension at any point and seek further advice if you are unsure about hand position.
The guiding sheet music can be downloaded here as a free pdf :

Please keep in mind this sheet music covers most of what is being played but not everything.

Love the learning in the groove format! I'd enjoy a video in this style focusing on syncopated jazz rhythmic cells and patterns. Plenty of stuff out there about licks scales and harmony, but I need more practice settling into the pocket while still swinging

Thanks for the comment and yes I've been pondering that exact concept!! So can you please give me more detail of your thoughts of what would benefit the most? These are mine: Build to Left hand walking bassline (so people can play solo). Working through a jazz blues in Eb slowly working in the 2 5 1 turn arounds. Do a comping video and improvisation video separately. I also need to work out how to make a jazz drum swinging pattern through pro-tools without it sounding mechanical!! Appreciate your input :)

@strat1227 7 месяцев назад
@@pianoproductivitypeace One thing that would really benefit me is practicing rhythmically displacing lines, starting/ending lines on off beats, adding rests randomly(?) to break up long 8th note lines, etc. I can swing when I'm comping but as soon as I start playing lines it's just endless 8th notes, or boring lines that start/end on the beat, and I can't seem to break out of it!
@strat1227

@@pianoproductivitypeace Also, there are TONS of swinging drum tracks on youtube that people were kind enough to provide with open licenses :)

Hey @strat1227 just stumbled across this and seems to address some elements of the issues you are experiencing? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qz8dQsxiR7M.htmlsi=dW7FYAaELzEr1eIH - also I am editing a swing groove video, and the next vid will follow up with right hand call and response patterns - cheers!

This one started to make my right wrist sore, which tells me that, however many drills on triads I do--and brother, I do a lot--my strength still isn't where it should be. Adding in those 9ths really makes a difference.
@pianoproductivitypeace
@pianoproductivitypeace 7 месяцев назад
Sorry to hear that! If I were you I'd simplify the rhythm in the right hand while you are building strength. Don't forget to take breaks if you are feeling tension! I have been thinking about this a lot actually and working on a 'contemporary hanon' finger strengthening video but that might be a long term project as I need to put in some research to get it right. All the best with your practicing and thanks for this important feedback!!

@@pianoproductivitypeace I am always careful about taking breaks and not injuring myself. I played guitar for many years, and I am familiar with what happens when you ignore warning signs. And I have most definitely not gotten any younger or more resilient over the years!

Super! Thanks a lot! Btw, what is the auto accompaniment you use? I heard base line and drums only
@pianoproductivitypeace

Hey thanks for the comment! I record the lessons in audio software (pro-tools) to the drum pattern, and then program in the basslines and drum fills in post production. This then makes the basis for the backing tracks I put out separately - cheers!

+1 to the Learning in the Groove format. If you're thinking about another video-- how about one focused on rhythmic playing? From the basic Charleston rhythm to the stuff you see Stevie do when his hands are pecking at the keyboard

Woohoo awesome ideas, I've got a whole bank of them wish I had more time to work on them! I will get to that eventually but a rough idea of the production line for next videos: 1. Jazz swing (comping), 2. Jazz swing (improvisation) - I'm also working on a Hanon' inspired contemporary finger strengthening exercise over an epic soundtrack! Please keep sending suggestions though, I note them all down!!

thanks for this vid .....could you please let know the bpm of the beat (rhythm tone)..... and is it having a name ....i am using a casio keyboard Ctx9000in... thanks .... is using the metronome along with the beat advisable .....
@pianoproductivitypeace
@pianoproductivitypeace 3 месяца назад
Hi there! I believe this one is 70bpm. I wrote the drum beat in so it doesn't have a particular name - but any sort of rock best should be good to practice with. I would say no need to use metronome if you have a best going, the beat itself serves as a metronome - hope this helps!
