The POP-Q system, or Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification system, is a standardized method used by healthcare professionals to assess and describe the severity of pelvic organ prolapse in women.
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more of the pelvic organs, such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum, descend from their normal position and bulge into the vaginal canal. This condition can result from weakened pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues, often due to factors like childbirth, aging, or chronic straining. Coughing,
The POP-Q system assigns numerical values and letters to various points and measurements within the vaginal and pelvic area to characterize the extent of prolapse. Here's a brief explanation of the components of the POP-Q system:
Points (Aa, Ba, C, D, Ap, Bp, TVL): These are anatomical landmarks within the vagina that are used as reference points for measurements.
Stages (0, I, II, III, IV): Each stage represents a different degree of prolapse, ranging from 0 (no prolapse) to IV (the most severe prolapse).
