I have huge respect for Adele for releasing pop songs with imperfections in them. I don't really like her music, but I am grateful for her not bowing to the pop paradigm that is autotune.

@@hbsupermage I was obviously referring to Adele's song "Easy on me". If you imply that those audible imperfections have be created on purpose using autotune, I will actually feel more respect for her. I will say it differently: - Tarja Turunen - goddess of metal - Floor Jensen - Queen of rock - Joan Jett- Queen of Rock & Roll - Doro Pesch - mother of metal - Janis Joplin - the grandmother of metal/rock - Noora Louhimo - Queen of metal - Liv Kristine - Metal Angel. And there are many others that are equally good. Floor is almost perfect, but not perfect. And not perfect.

Floor Jansen is the best and most versatile female singer of our time, IMHO. She, as an empath, feels and provokes any emotion she chooses and easily imparts that onto anyone who hears and listens. She has brought tears to my eyes many, many times. Not because I feel a personal connection to the lyrics (sometimes) but simply because of her voice and performance. I’ve never experienced that with any other artist without having the lyrics remind me of something I went through personally in my life. She’s unmatched. 💯

Just a note, that performance of "Shallow" by Floor Jansen, even Lady Gaga said it was awesome. I don't think pop singers are necessarily inferior, their musical style don't force them to push as much as in metal/rock. And singers like Tarja, Floor and Simone, they were also trained in classical style. They can nail operas easily. It's on another level for sure.
@Nikioko
@Nikioko 2 года назад
Really? Didn't know that Lady Gaga even noticed it. But Floor's version was better for sure. Lady Gaga is a great musician when it comes to composition and the piano, but Floor for sure is the better singer. And I very much doubt that Tarja, Floor and Simone can nail operas easily. Most likely of them Tarja. But to be a great opera singer, it takes a lot more. You have to specialize in this genre early and dedicate your whole life to it.
@bertjones3010
@bertjones3010 2 года назад
Training be it classical or other wise, the important thing isn't the genre as much a learning how to master your instrument. That's the most impressive thing about Floor. Haley Reinhart, Diana Ankudinova both had great control. But they are all different genres so you can't really compare their music with each other.

This. Being a former singer myself I can confirm your intuition. One can notice this from how Jansen project her voice, releasing only the necessary amount of air to reach those notes, with enough room for a longer vibrato if needed. Gaga is not bad at all. I think this was heavily biased towards metal. The parts selected for the videos didn't do the pop singers justice. With a couple of exceptions the singers in both genres here have amazing voices. I agree, it was definitely skewed out of pops favor, but there are a lot of examples of metal artists doing pop covers, Floor Janson is a great example of that, otherwise there’s Jonathan Young, and then there’s the whole Bring me the Horizon band who used to be super heavy metalcore but they have since completely changed into edgy pop. I am with Shred on Adele, she might be "pop" (although she is a lot blusier than her peer) singer, but her voice is great and I would say her mainstream success is totally deserved. That being said, and I agreement with probably most of the comment section Floor Jansen is the total package and despite the massive success she has with Nightwish she has achieved mainstream recognition in the Netherlands and might do so as well in Germany this year. Even when she goes up high her voice has weight to it so it is never piercing. I can listen to her all day because she has such great pitch control and power that is never fatiguing to hear. Sure there are singers like Whitney and Mariah that have more range but they can get hard on the ears and I listen to music for enjoyment rather than a vocal exercise. I do love Katy, so much so I have a lyric of her tattooed on me. She can be quite nasal and out of breath but accoustically she’s fantastic. Just look at her Unconditionally performance on Ellen and pretty much all of her performances of Thinking of You. She likes to incorporate rock to her live performances aswell which I think stems from her Warped tour days. They (mostly) come from very different musical traditions. "Pop" singers' cultural antecedents are from black American gospel singing and therefore African styles of music. "Metal" singers come (mostly) from European 12-tone music with all the scales, modes, etc. that come with that. The African traditions often have more than just 12 notes in their scales. Then again, some of them have only 5. This is why blues, rock, "soul" and pop are so filled with pentatonics and blue notes. They are callbacks to musical traditions from Africa adapted to the instrumentation of the European tradition. That's sort of the "schoolboy" explanation/understanding of the two styles. Of course that's a generalization and the has been and continues to be overlap, but that seems (to me, at least) to be the basic difference. (And don't let's even get started on the rhythmic aspects of the two traditions...) Greatest metal vocalist: Rob Halford. (Or Geoff Tate?) Greatest pop vocalist: Steve Perry. (Or maybe Darryl Hall?)

Metal female I'll go Tatiana from Jinjer. Metal male is the quad of: Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Anselmo, and Warrel Dane. Pop, I'll honestly say none. There are some catchy songs at times, but it's not because of the singing. Somebody just wrote them a catchy line and music....many times "borrowing" from past popular songs.

I don't really think this is an appropriate comparison, as there's clearly two different kinds of vocal training at work. All the "metal singers" have clearly trained in opera, which is different but not better. As has been pointed out, if we're talking technical skill and range, some pop singers reign supreme. The thing that these metal singers AKA opera singers have on their side is volume. And you can sing to a large theater without a microphone, that's a loud ass s***. In the end, isn't that one is better than the other, it's that they are different in many ways, and it's not really fair to either side to compare them against each other.

Only metal singer that's missing, if this video is the one I think it is, is Brittney Slayes from Unleash the Archers. 😂😂 Saw an interview with a regular "pop" guitarist who was playing the AFAS, or whatever, with Floor Jansen ... he nailed what metal is about. He had to learn to play more than the normal standard 3-5 cord songs without real changes in key and rhythm. 😂 Symphonic metal is the contemporary equivalent of classical music. If Mozart and Beethoven were alive now ... would they compose and play pop or metal? (hint ... watch Ghost Love Score)
@nikosv95
@nikosv95 2 месяца назад
You must not have listened to a lot of classical music if you think symphonic metal is the modern version of classical. Compositionally, symphonic metal resembles movie soundtracks at best. At its worst is generic video game music, like all those ai generated epic music videos. Put that on top of pop song structures, following the verse chorus formula, add in some monotonus chugging riffs and some catchy vocals which are mostly sung in a pop style, and voila! Symphonic metal

It's not exculsive to neither classical music nor symphonic metal (as a supposed educated person you should know this). The main element of classical music is composition and melodic/thematic development This goes at least for romantic era classical music , which is what these symphonic bands poorly try to imitate (so composers like wagner , beethoven etc). All these bands lack any ability for nuanced melodic composition and development. They just follow the verse-chorus formula. When was the last time you heard verse-chorus in a classical symphnony? Obviously the makers of the video you're watching have a slight bias lol but I don't think they did a terrible job showing the pop singers although they definitely matched them up in a way to make the metal singers seem more impressive. Arianna Grande has insane vocal ability so do a few of the others (Christina, Adele, Gaga) but they didn't show clips where they are actually showing off that ability. Instead, they showed fairly weak and basic clips and gave the metal singers dramatic orchestral pieces lol. I like the reaction though. Lara Fabian is the only pop singer who can hang with the likes of Floor or Tarja, with Adele as an honourable mention. Pop singers would never agree to this, but imagine a theatre with good acoustics and each singer must sing the same challenging song, no mic, no band, no auto tune, no lip sync, just an a cappella rendition of the song in a key of their choice. They walk out on stage and start singing. Then we judge. Only caveat, the metal ladies go last for if they went first, the pop singers wouldn't go out on stage afterward. True, but one genre is over saturated with “artists” that are manufactured by labels as a money making commodity, while the other tends to be artists that are in it for the passion of making music (while also make a living out of it too). So regardless of comparing talent/ability on an individual level, the difference between the genres is “what sells” versus “what sounds good”. So labels throw shit at the walls to see what sticks then they take that turd and polish it up with audio engineering so it looks like a diamond. Without a doubt there are genuine diamonds in pop music, but those are not an accurate reflection of the pop industry as a whole.
