@@ecliptik8020 tbf Todd has got more left since he did this video, and is far more aware about the issues surrounding these kind of charity singles. I don't think he'd agree with this Todd's views. These charity singles make almost no money and it rarely gets to the right people (Simon Cowell doesn't get enough criticism for the fact that he makes a lot of money off of these charity singles when he does them, he doesn't work for free the artists do). The most famous and well known charity single, Band/Live Aid, was actually a colossal failure, despite what Geldof says about it - almost all the food they bought rotted on a dock before it was literally thrown in the sea. Food that did make it to Ethiopia didn't actually make it to the starving people - like Geldof was warned what would happen but insisted on doing it on his own saying the local people didn't trust the established charities - and because he did that, he allowed corrupt and rich officials to get away with taking all the food they were given for their people and selling it to other countries and areas illegally, after attempting to charge their own poor and starving population and at one stage try and use the promise of the food as a way to get farmers to give up their land for free. Geldof, by refusing to do it properly and befriending the corrupt government, basically made sure none of the food got to the right people. Todd has briefly spoken that band/live aid was a failure when asked and I think that's added to cynicism about these things.
I think he's actually singing in Haitian Creole (?) , which is a sweet gesture-though I have to keep myself from laughing every time he sings because it's so starkly different from the rest of the song. He sounds like he's giving it his all and it's probably the most enjoyable thing about the song.
Artists in both We Are the World 25 for Haiti and Earth by Lil Dicky: Justin Bieber Zac Brown Snoop Dogg Kanye West/Kevin Hart Adam Levine Miley Cyrus John Legend
I think we should actually make a remake every ten years, just to see it getting more and more weird. Imagine 2000 version with NSYNCy and Limp Bizkit, that would be absolutely hilarious.
@@itscat322 this video is 6 years old or something (older if you count the original upload) and somehow two people think of the same thing in the same comment thread 16 hours apart. kinda strange but funny.
We kinda got that with the 2001 remake of "What's Goin' On", a charity single done for both AIDS research and 9/11 victims. I kinda like it, way better than either version of We Are the World, but that's mainly nostalgia talking. And yes, it did have both N'SYNC and Fred Durst on it.
Wrong. A far more credible charity record came and took its place - coming from the UK, no less. A cover of the Foo Fighters' Times Like These. Featuring all the top stars of today that BBC Radio 1 plays - thus the Radio 1 Live Lounge All Stars credit.
According to Wikipedia, the choir near the end had Zac Brown, John Legend, two of the Jonas Brothers, Gladys Knight, Robin Thicke, Rob Thomas, both members of Heart, and Brian goddamn Wilson. But no, they decided Tony Bennett and Jennifer Nettles (whoever that is) were more fit to be soloists.
Jennifer Nettles is the lead singer of the country duo, Sugarland, for the record. She was also featured on Bon Jovi’s hit, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home”.
can't wait for deadpool and wolverine plays billie joel armstrong song plays in the movie when you are graduated from high school and you become a genius bullshit
I’ve always been impressed that Todd wrote this episode in only a few days because it’s easily one of my favorite antique pop song reviews. Maybe the song is just that funny.
@@ZomgRuler And now we have Drake with "Don't Matter To Me" ft. Michael Jackson. Same sessions as that, but here it sounds like Jackson recorded on a piece of toast.
Fun fact everyone: we are the world 25 is one of the few hit songs to actually receive negative reviews from critics. The other stuff Todd reviews either get mixer reviews or positive reviews. Yes this song was so bad that even the critics who are usually nice on hit songs hated it.
That just says a lot. I heard this song in 2010 and didn't think much of it. I was only 11 or 12 at the time. But looking back at it now in 2016, it's shit. It really is. The worst parts are the terrible rapping and the FUCKING AUTO-TUNE!!!
+kenterminatedbygoogle HELL YEAH, I liked the original! It seems a little cheesy by today's standards but it's infinitely better than the 2010 version. Plus, the original had better singers, no pointless rapping, or FUCKING AUTO-TUNE!!!
Best review of this song: "Recently, the music world came together to record 'We Are the World 25' a song to raise awareness of the Haiti earthquake disaster; sadly, the song itself was a disaster" - Rolling Stones
Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen going back and forth was legitimately awesome. Yeah the song is really not that greatly written but the performers made it neat.
"We're Stars", put together by Ronnie James Dio, is a charity song that kicks ass. It has a LOT of star power if you are knowledgeable about 80's rock/metal. I prefer it to this song, so much.
I have never heard this song. Its January 2019, I didn't even know this song was made. I even helped raise money for Haiti relief. I am so happy the first time I am hearing it is through the Todd in the Shadows review.
+Candy Chan Maybe because of his horrid vocals that sound like he got really high beforehand & the fact that he really only sings in his native Haitian.
Why couldn't each of these singers donate the proceeds from their top single for the past year to Haiti relief efforts instead of recording a crappy song?
Same lesson that British artists should've done instead of going in to record a remake of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" for the Grenfell tower in June 2017. *added to note* Although I do think that the current Times Like These charity record by the Radio 1 Live Lounge All Stars is arguably the most credible charity record since the BBC's own Perfect Day record in 1997.
@@blackamerican40 Isn't Vince Vaugn also in this one as well? Dan's appearance in the original is NOT explained at all, but according to Dan himself it was purely by accident but his name was on the list. The documentary does NOT say anything about this.
I remembered performing this song with my high school choir my freshman year of high school. Heck, I even got a solo which Lionel Richie sang. Ironically, we performed it as part of a fundraiser concert for our trip to New York City! Not exactly charity, but it went to a good cause.
You have to give the original “We Are the World” credit. At least it had great musicians that stood the test of time. But in the 2010 version, half of the musicians are not even remembered. And that was eight years ago while the original was 32 years ago. 1985- Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Daryl Hall, Kenny Loggins, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Lionel Richie, and more. 2010- Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Fox, Enrique Ingleases, Josh Groban, T-Pain, Fergie, Will.I.Am, Lil Wayne, Wyclef Jean, Miley Cyrus, Which cast of singers is more popular. It’s obvious what my answer is.
***** www.dailymotion.com/video/x127yd7_hofi-geza-pial-a-fold-teljes-egyben_tv This god damn video played on national TV like a billion times, even in the first half of the 2000's, even though it's much older than that.
Could be worse. In the UK we had 4 Band Aid tracks! The original, the sequel and TWO reboots of the first one (both diminishing returns and with Bono coming back to play his bit cause no one would dare do it lol).
It’s kinda funny that you said “25 years later the only replacement we have for Micheal Jackson is Michael Jackson” because 2010 is the year the Weeknd started to release his demos and he is great at doing the Michael Jackson style songs with a modern twist.
Ironically enough, by the time WAW 2010 was finished there was the Chile earthquake. If an 8.8 quake and tsunami weren't bad enough, the Latin charity singles were avoided like the plague in Chile before we went crazy on top of it all. Just feel #Blessed by the fact that you are not aware who Alberto Plaza (DO.NOT.GOOGLE.HIM). But if the pop charity single weren't bad enough, it was soon followed by a cover of "Gracias a la Vida", which it's technically the other National Anthem of Chile and South America, probably ripped to shreds by the likes of Laura Pausini and Juanes. I don't know, I will never bring myself to listen to it. Fuck charity singles, even jingles for political campaigns are more tolerable.
TheBoringAddress Fueron complicados esos momentos post terremoto, sobretodo porque se hizo popular esa horrible canción de el grupo "Croni-K" llamada arriba la vida o algo así
@@litlblkhouse Yeah, but they recorded both parts for different songs before iLoveMakonnen (which is not a fucking rap name, by the way) got his grubby little hands on them so he could make a quick buck. Nevermind the fact that Peep hated X, or the fact that Peep was bisexual and X assaulted a gay man in prison for looking at him the wrong way. Gotta get that edgy 15-year old bread.
I'm glad that the most simmilar thing to a "charity song" I seen last year was the Global citizen concert. And that was awesome. All the stars, none of the cringe.
"AaAaAaAaAaAaA, hi, Wonder Mike! I'm Wyclef! The captain of the gravy train. Climb aboard! I brought my best foot flowered...Pshoo! Sure beats breaking up with me. Don't look now! I'm just a friendly reminder. AaAaAaAaAaAaA! AaAaAaAaAaAaA! Think I won the powerball."
I have been watching your videos all afternoon, thank you for not sugarcoating and for being real. That said, your Justin Bieber inspires swirlies is exactly what I didn't know I needed...you rule!💫✨
Honestly, I genuinely like the original song (I don't care for lyrics as much as I do the actual music, and I think the music is good- and especially with that many good singers it couldn't sound bad)...but the new version with rappers and autotune, it just hurts.
In this time of tragedy let us not forget the celebrities. Ugh. I remember when the original came out in '85. The truly sad thing about this reboot is how we went from serious powerhouse musicians - Willie Nelson, Springsteen, Dione Warwick...god damn MICHAEL JACKSON to...T-Pain and RANDY Jackson? What? Was Fred Durst unavailable?
I have a soft spot for the original. (Although i do give credit that adding the Haitian Creole language in the 2010 version was pretty cool.) But anyway, I sang it in my high school's choir at least once a year. And thoroughly enjoy it. I also think its pretty amazing that at one time they were able to get some of the most talented singers of all time to do a collab. I'd give anything for a true successor. One that does have the best talent of today. I think it'd be pretty cool.
Ikr. Many of the “overly angry for no reason” RU-vidrs of the old days haven’t aged well and just look like idiots, but AVGN and Todd are ones that actually pull it off extremely well and are hilarious, mostly cause of their delivery
I know that this video is old now but for the record that person you don't know around the 4:30 mark is Jennifer Nettles from the country band Sugarland. I dunno if you ever go back and read comments but I just wanted to say it anyways.
@@canadmexi for country, yeah. And Jennifer Nettles can sing her ass off. Seriously great voice. I don't know your musical preferences, but they have a ballad called "Stay" that's just beautiful. "Already Gone" and "I Don't Want To" are excellent too. If you're by any chance a Bon Jovi fan, she did a song with them called "Who Says You Can't Go Home". Not a fave of mine, but she sounds great.
I was wondering if anyone pointed that out. She was semi big at the time Sugarland was crossing over with Stay... And Nettles did a duet with Bon Jovi about that time "Who Says You Can't Go Home"
You couldn’t escape this song in 85. I’ve had it stuck in my head since I was 12. “Do They know It’s Christmas time?” I didn’t realize til later that it is just as horrible.
I didn't know who half of these people were either, Todd. What makes this more depressing is that this premiered during the Olympics that year (and I'm pretty sure NBC dedicated their coverage of the opening ceremony to the victims of the actual earthquake). The original had much more meaning and real star power, and that's what made it a classic. Go listen to that again.
You can try to remake this song but, the original, with all the talent they got together, can't be replicated. They couldn't even replace Michael Jackson, you just can't.
kenterminatedbygoogle Don’t give them any ideas, dude! You know how desperate the music industry is, they’d actually try and do it! They’re that bad, and only getting worse!
lurch321 Exactly, but it's not me saying that. That's why i was wondering IF she didn't get distracted by butterflies anymore, but nothing, after 9 months and after I changed my profile picture and username from my mom's name to my own name, and finally say that this channel is my own, and not me using someone else's channel. But I bet she's distracted by butterflies all the time, so she can think of how she should shit-talk whoever her current ex is, because by the time I'm done writing this comment, she'll be in TWO different relationships, which she'll write about in her next godawful garbage fire of a song.
I remember this one when I first saw it on NBC 5 years ago and it was shown during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. This version was not as good as the original. I prefer the original version a lot better than this one. I remember when I first heard it back in 1985 when I was about 6 years old when living in Puerto Rico, it was a great song, but I still have the original 45, but my parents used to have it on cassette at the time. This version wasn't too good, but I hate the rapping part at the end, it sucks! After hearing this version, I had enough, so I stick to the original from 1985. The original version of "We Are The World" still stands the test of time.
This was bad, but not "What's Going On?" by Artisis Against AIDS bad, which featured Fred Durst, Backstreet Boys, Ja Rule, N Sync, Darren Hayes and Pat Monahan
@@timmy841212not even my 3 favorite female artists (I’m not referring to Destiny’s Child but they ok) and the couple of decent artists on this track can save this song and what it stands for. With a cast like Pat Monohan, Fred Durst, NSYNC 🤢, Ja Rule, Darren Hayes, P. Diddy, Rapper Nelly, and Jennifer fucking Lopez, how am I supposed to tolerate it? And it’s all in Bono’s greasy hands.
If they would have waited a few years I think The Weeknd could have been a decent replacement for MJ but I doubt he would want to put his name on this.

Maybe blasting that song out of loudspeakers at the Russian troops will make them retreat. Hey, has anyone tried weaponizing anti-war songs in that manner?
Mad Hatter Mupo Well, it’s not like Taylor could’ve improved this or any song really, since this song isn’t a breakup song. Even though she fucks those up too.
Josh Groban was actually one of the best artists on this...thing. And he didn't even really care about it, now that's a great indicator of how trash this song was.
I was a teenager when the original We Are the World was released. We thought it was crap. It followed on the heels of the far superior Do They Know It's Christmas? Which we loved. It was like American musicians went, "We can do that too. Just with awful lyrics, and bad, repetitive music". Then there was a christian version called Do Something Now. Which was the worst of all. Do a review of that. I would love it.
Honestly thi, I will take out-of-touch celebrities singing about helping poor people interspersed by random flexing about how famous and powerful they’re anytime soon over a laughably stupid song where the literal title is basically them being actually so ignorant that they underestimated a whole group of people from a whole continent of not knowing such basic things such as christmas
My old child care center did the song during an end of summer "concert" but it was 2009, and it was the original (as a tribute to Michael Jackson) because the 2010 version didn't exist yet.
I marathon watched about 15 of your videos this morning Todd. Your newer ones have gotten much better. Very good work. I suggest you get in to doing radio work some where. You have a lot of talent man. im very impressed and very grateful for the entertainment. a lot of laughs. I love it.
I'm almost at the end of 2020, watching a video uploaded in 2015 that was originally aired in 2010 and it's until NOW that I learn that this... "song" exists. Goddammit, I hate 2020.
