The Idea of this one was was formed by accident. My goal was to create a fingersnap sound, becaus Zack Maxis asked for it. I couldn't create the fingersnap but when i played around the popcorn sound suddenly appeared.
SO, SPECIAL THANKS TO ZACK MAXIS allias Manganoid!

This piece is an obvious choice for the SID chip. It was originally composed for Moog modular, and the SID chip basically a digitally controlled MiniMoog.

yes you right :) There still many other version on the C64 of this song but I've tried to be as close on the hot butter version as possible. It's fun to search fot popcorn at deepsid.chordian.net/

SID is an analog synth on a chip, but it's by no means a Moog. The sound is different. Moog is very warm and smooth, while SID is aggresive, sharp and 8-bit-ish. (Discrete voltage controlled circuitry, big tolerances vs chip digitally controlled circuitry which is more precise) I've made a SammichSID synth using real SID chips, and I also have a Moog Slim Phatty so I can compare.

@@raytracer5726 Obviously the digital oscillators sound different, but the overall synh architecture basically the same. 3 oscillators, similar waveforms, 1 filter. And at this point, it is a debate like how a Stradivari violin differs in minor nuances in the sound from a carbon composit violin. But they are both violins with similar capablities.

@@raytracer5726 the analog filter is a weakness in the design, but much better than the other 8-bit sound offerings of the early 80s. I don't recall either filter or envelope generator, the latter in my mind makes it a synthesizer. Yannes himself admitted the filter was a soft point in the design, much like the PLL in the color generator circuit of the 6567 (Al Charpentier). ref: IEEE Spectrum Commodore 64 Design Case History March 1985.

Nice background idea and good selection of instrument parameters! To me, it's the most accurate popcorn cover so far :-)

Since Bob Yannes, (designer of the 6581) was trying to build an actual synthesizer with the little 28 pin project I hope he hears this!

I guess he will never hear this but dreams are for dreaming, so maybe someday? ^^

Ah, this is cool. Sounds quite close to the original! By the way: you're a machine! So much music all the time... keep going! :)

There's a part of the song where the amplitude of the pulse wave appears to be slowly going down, while the other voices are staying the same. I didn't know this was possible! I thought the SID only had one volume control for all voices.

You can programm the ADSR values for each not, i think in this case I've startet with a high Decay value and decreased it step by step

Of course! It makes sense now. Thank you
