Nolan Lmao. In all seriousness though, concrete is full of energy and makes me laugh. Also, I can’t believe he thought the outro of the song was kinda cheesy! It makes me go wild
@@leonardopena7105 That song is a highlight for me, even if it's the least complex song on the album. Although admittedly it's because it hits on something that most people don't touch. Specifically by referencing the "It Gets Better" campaign to prevent LGBTQ suicide, with her saying that every day feels the same. I think keeping the song simple really sells that idea of depression and repetition. It's also why it's the perfect lead in to Don't Go Outside and its ultimate message of being who you want to be. But it being a highlight for me says less than it could when pretty much every song has something compelling and doesn't overstay it's welcome. I haven't loved an album like this in quite some time. Moon Honey's last album came closest, but even that has a song or two I tend to skip.
The reprise of the previous songs in Don't Go Outside sound amazing together especially since they don't sound exactly the same as how they were used in their respective tracks
Ikr? yesterday I watched one of his older video (a 2008 question of the week) and there were only around 300 comments and all of them were about the music, no memes, just opinions about music. It creeped me out to hell and back.
Titanic mentally abused poppy for years and all she wanted to do during that time was be her own person... is what I've gathered from people online and the lyrics in her music. Much respect points to her.
Nocam is dead Not necessarily, but when u love an artist alot and want them to get more recognition, a reviewer as huge as fantano giving them a high rating is amazing to see. I had that type of excitement when i saw him review Yazz ahmed
Jacob Hughes I thought they were a little too similar to each other, especially how close the are in the album, but after listening long enough to catch the nuances that separate them they absolutely S L A P
I’m so glad you reviewed this album. It’s a fantastic Pop/Metal album and the inclusion of other sub genres are genius to me. Yes, that’s Marilyn Manson on the record. Poppy has one of the most interesting pop careers in recent memory. It’s exciting to watch. Personally, though, I feel as though the crowd cheering in “Concrete” makes perfect sense. considering it blends into the final part of the song, which is the catchy pop-hook part. I don’t really know how to explain it but I think it’s commentary on how she will sell the dark message of the song to the masses with bright hooks. If that makes sense.
She’s the only pop artist that I find genuinely interesting because I have no idea what the next record/single will sound like unlike other artists where it’s entirely predictable
To be fair some albums/musicians lend themselves better to memeing than others. Poppy, w/o being familar w/ the "lore", will unfortunately just lend herself to lame "poopy" jokes and "I disagree" memes.
@@thirtyyearoldmulberryfield you mean all the weird ass shit she exploded in the scene with in like 2016? I mean I remember that but her acts were kind of forgettable, and, if you were to make a reference to those times (or "lore" as you call it) a very select few people would understand. So it's not worth it really.
@@steltzsm Well it took for her to show up on pro wrestling show, to do promo video and play that same wrestler to the ring...for Poppy to get my attention.
I feel like concrete is sort of a analogy for her music throughout the years, going from trying sweet tastes (poppy stuff), which wasn’t exciting for her, to concrete(the rock thingy) which has a harder edge that’s more exciting
@@carlshatred931 poppy literally said in multiple interviews that concrete is about killing her old character and coming back as a new one with a new sound. pls educate yourself if ur gonna give ur opinion on something u know nothing abt
Easily my favourite thing Poppy has dropped, which is surprising given my love of her creepy culty days (hence my name). She is incapable of not dropping bangers at this rate.
I think this album is a masterpiece. Its always evolving and keeping you interested. The guitar tones satisfy my nu- metal hunger, guitar breakdowns satisfy my core hunger. I think this album is a breath of fresh air that is needed to break up the monogamy of the current music industry.
It's wonderful. All around it's one of the more interesting metal albums I've heard in awhile, and I love some extreme shit. Poppy's take on it just sounds surprisingly fresh, and a combination that you don't hear all that much. I really appreciate the critical acclaim it's receiving, as at first I received a bit of backlash for enjoying it as much as I did, considering most people see me as a "truebred" metalhead. I wouldn't call this avant-garde, but it's certainly an eclectic style that ranges through many genres. I hope that this could be a crossover record for those that've previously enjoyed Poppy, or otherwise enjoy the soundscapes at hand.
I got some Devin Townsend vibes on it, who I've heard has a mixed reception in the metal community. But this and his albums are the most I've been invested in the genre because of the experimentation. Do you have any other artists and especially specific albums you'd suggest? I actually love metal instrumentation, but I can find the vocals off putting. Ocean Machine and Infinity are my two favorite albums by Townsend, if that helps.
Chris Greatty had a band called Blame Candy, you can find a couple videos on here. Chris and Corey have collabed quite a bit, that little circle of dysfunctional mess is very entertaining.
Agreed, it's an interesting album with some interesting sounds all mixed in and I'm curious to see how this will play out for culture + music progression. Shes got a cute, girly punky metal type of style.
I've never been into metal, as a sound it's something I haven't really gotten into, but Poppy and this album have changed my mind on that ironically enough. I'm a fan & can't wait to see it all live next weekend!
Yeah I loved the review but I thought it was a bit out of order that you said the lyrics get a bit repetitive on 'bite your teeth' and generally gave a balanced take
Loved this record, really great to see poppy going for a heavier tone. "BLOODMONEY" might be my favorite track, i really like the mid-tempo "drop", and the lyrics are top notch . "I Disagree" is good as well, the japanese vocals and industrial beat are what makes this song unique.
As someone who haven't listen to poppy since "lowlife" and her questionable videos, this album is very refreshing and impressive. Much less gimmicky than I thought it would be, and sonically i DIG. I cant get bloodmoney out of my head
Maybe it's just me, but I definitely see BLOODMONEY as being directed at the Catholic church. It talks about men's grabbing hands going in places they shouldn't, begging for Christ's forgiveness, and how people's beliefs can change depending on context.
Its about the music industry, music executives specifically, the album is actually poppy disagreeing and burning down the standards of the music industry
An important thing to remember when you’re listening to I Disagree, is the fact that Poppy herself is a victim of Titanics abuse and manipulation. Keeping that in mind while listening to the album makes the lyrics make more sense.
Especially when listening to Anything Like Me. That song has a lot of lyrics that “coincidentally” align with her predicament with Mars Argo and what Titanic was doing.
Aaahhh! Dude I loved that video! So cool to not only see someone actually acknowledge the passion that goes into death/extreme metal but to be so genuine and vulnerable on video was beautiful bro. Hope you're still checking out some metal on your own time.
Nah I think 8/10 did it justice. the one time melon did a review that made sense, except for the fact that he didnt like concrete >:( it was funny and sonically nice too
With Melon's general distaste for modern Metalcore and many of the djent/deathcore bands, and as a fan of the label in question, I am pleasantly surprised to see a Sumerian Records album get such a positive score!
I like poppy too and this album is great I think but too be honest melon just likes anything weird it’s the hipster in him that makes him give anything strange a high score
I was thinking the exact same thing. Although I was a bigger fan of their stable in the late 00's-early 10's, it always feels good when Sumerian gets a win.
She's only performing one cover song, All the Things She Said by t.A.T.u. Outside of the I Disagree album she's playing Am I a Girl?, X, Play Destroy and Scary Mask
My ranking: 1. Anything Like Me 2. I Disagree 3. BLOODMONEY 4. Don’t Go Outside 5. Sick Of The Sun 6. Bite Your Teeth 7. Fill The Crown (I like the chorus, but it’s overall pretty messy. Fun tho.) 8. Concrete (Same as FTC, very fun and enjoyable, but technically messy) 9. Sit/Stay 10. Nothing I Need (Forgettable)
@@MLDX most of her songs in the past are not to be taken seriously they're mostly making fun of pop artist and being this dumb robotic pop artist/industry plant.
8:04. I think you missed the whole point of the album. She’s breaking out as an artist. Refusing to be defined. She’s playing poppy because that’s what she WANTS to play right now. She’ll quit when she stops having fun. This is seemingly close to the end of the story arc.
Here's a time stamp chart of this review 0:45 -a melon 1:50 -Still a melon 4:30 -Melon reviews a poppy album 6:20 -The Needle Drop 8:12 -Anthony Fantano
Yassss finally, I was anticipating this review even more than Circles. It's been doing really well apparently, but I'm glad Anthony is here to give the album a little more attention.
Polyphia gets an 8, Poppy gets an 8. Both are some of my favorite artists of the past decade. Can you make a collaboration happen Fantano? I'm going to see Poppy live in 3 weeks. Hope it lives up to the album hype.
@@kidsfromthenorth3191 Great. My native language is Russian, i am not talented in it either. What talent you have specifically in English, maybe like you can't make a mistake in it, or in writing douchey comments?
100% the best and most accurate review on RU-vid, here for it! Much closer to the conversations my friends and I have had about the album than the typical RU-vidr that immediately references Baby Metal, making me want to find an old CRT monitor to smash my head through-the comparison is so lazy and really disappointing. I loved the album, and when I saw here live with my sister last February, (last public event I attended before the pandemic-sad, because I was really looking forward to her touring with one of my favorite bands Deftones last Summer,) Poppy, her band, and Vowws were all incredibly awesome. I’ll say her performance was less energetic than I was expecting but I blame the horrible Florida humidity, the nonstop touring, and what looked to me like a dress that did not at all fit our climate, (what do I know, maybe the dress breathes super well and was super comfy, I dunno.) Her band, (Nicolas Perez, Matt McJunkins, & Ralph Alexander,) was fantastic.
@@emirsalman3237--Not friends, other reviewers, reactors, etc.; my friends mostly get stuff like Poppy, (in fact, she's a bit too normie for some of them.)
Feels like an American baby metal. I look forward to this future persona/sound from her. It’s very catchy and can bring pop fans to the world of metal. YOU CANT DEFEAT THE METAL
I Disagree is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I enjoy all of Poppy's music. Poppy and Spiritbox are doing some of the most interesting stuff in metal right now.
I think this album was an incredible achievement in music. Any artist could mash up different genres and sounds to only end up with a mess that would just be an unpleasant listen. But what she's done here is the opposite. I had to listen to it multiple times to just believe that many different sounds were coalesced into this album and they actually fit. Yes nu-metal sounds and much of what she has here have become hokey over time to the point where the metal genre as a whole has shifted to a heavier more complicated sound with the exception of bands such as Ghost but she crafted this thing in a way where I can't help but be surprised at it as a whole. I don't think I would generally hate on any pop artist that dives into the metal genre as I think that just the recognition that metal exists to some pop artists might be a good thing as far as expanding the audience as a whole. Overall just very well done.
Regarding the Marilyn Manson comment, Poppy said that the only ones on the entire record are her, Titanic Sinclair, Chris Greatti & Zakk Cervini. Which makes me think the Marilyn Manson-esque vocals are most likely Titanic's voice, but since they've parted ways before the song was released she didn't want to credit him anymore. She even removed his name from her previous music video so it would make sense.
Honestly loved this record, and I’m curious as to how they got those like dubstep esque synths on bloodmoney. Sounds like something generated through like modular or soemthing
