SAME! I will never read SJM or 13RW b/c I already know I will hate them but I did read RPO b/c I thought I would love it as a 80's culture and sci-fi fan and I thought I was a crazy person b/c I absolutely hated it and couldn't figure out why AnYoNe would like it and made me question their intelligence, which admittedly was taking my own opinion too far but dang did I hate it...
@mushroomshrub

SJM witnessed her childhood pet being murdered by a morse code themed supervillain, and from that formative moment she swore she would have her vengeance upon dots and dashes, even if it cost her the readability of every manuscript she would ever write. Or something. I honestly can't figure why she else she abuses em dashes and ellipses so much. Also it kinda boggles my mind how people can read the masturbation screed from rpo and still think of it as a good book. It hurts me just thinking about it.

I feel as though you either love SJM or hate her. And there's nothing wrong with someone who acknowledges that her writing and plot isn't perfect, and loving it anyway. Some people are just drawn to her stories. I take issue with people who think she's perfect and call her "Queen". I think of her novels as guilty pleasures I can just get lost in when I'm having a crappy day, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I, too, couldn't stand Ready Player One. The whole thing just reeked of this consumerist,permanently adolescent bugman power fantasy that I think is actually rather dangerous to men as a whole. I'm a guy who was born in 1990, so one might think that being bombarded with old video-game references or whatever would be fun because it's nostalgic. But that's the problem. "Nostalgia" isn't fun when it's: a) Common knowledge that is readily available that even normies have some tertiary awareness of it (kinda hard to feel "nostalgic" for a show that's on the front page of Netflix) b) Incredibly heavy with references to the point where you feel like the author is constantly nudging you and saying "Heh, us geeks, amirite?" All of the references made in the book would have been better if the author had made up allegories (read: knockoffs) of pre-existing franchises. That would have made them more engaging because there would at least be some fun in connecting the dots.
@mynameismarines
@mynameismarines 6 лет назад
That feeling of the author constantly poking us going "get it? get it? get it?" Yes. Spot on. The entire time. I switched from physical book to audiobook partway through just so I could speed it up...

OMG I love this!! I LOVE your rant about A Court of Thorns & Roses. I honestly don't get the love for this book. I read it last month, and it was a spectacularly boring reading experience. The characters are painfully bland, and I was also annoyed by the repeated use of some words like, ''feline''. -He stalked closer with a feline grace... -A feline smile. -With steps that were too graceful, too feline, he approached the dining table. Nope.

OMG! That's how I feel about Sarah J Maas. I have never been able to even go past the first three chapters of Throne of Glass. I don't know what possessed me to try and read the other one - I think it's A Court of Thorns and Roses - it was all too... just not my style. I suppose the way you say basic is the best summary of her writing style and the fact that she writes in a way that should make a character badass but it's not. She's more of telling the character is badass than showing.

This video had such a strange effect on me. I have enjoyed a lot of these books, but I totally and COMPLETELY agree with you on multiple of these. First of all, when I read the book Fallen, I absolutely hated it. I thought it was the WORST book and that the plot line was completely ridiculous. When I was younger, I read The Selection and it was one of my favorites. I recently reread it to realize that it wasn’t really written well and it was very simplistic. Personally, I like the book Thirteen Reasons Why but dealing with experiences from suicide, this book was unrealistic and harsh. I thought that the “reasons why she committed suicide” were very minor compared to what other people have dealt with. I also believe that writing this could make teens believe that if someone says the smallest thing about you, you should injure yourself. 2 of my favorite series are City of Bones and ACOTAR. I read Throne of Glass and it was my favorite for a while, but again, while I was rereading it I noticed everything I hated about the book and I haven’t read it since. As you can see, I’ve LOVED several of these series but I thought the way you gave them criticism was very professional and unbiased. I love ACOTAR and City of Bones and I hate to hear it bashed on, but you just gained a new subscriber. Funny how things work😂😂

I agree with you on City of Bones. It took me so long to get through the first book and it was agonizing. I pushed myself through the mortal instruments series and did not actually start loving it until the fourth book which is a lot of people's least favorite in the series. I can say yes the Shadowhunter is my favorite series, but City of Bones was god awful. I also agree with you Miss Perigrines I absolutely could not stand the first book and felt at times that I was falling asleep. I do not plan to continue with the rest of the series and just recently unhauled all of them. As well with the Selection I tried so hard to continue the series only to try to support Kiera Cass who is a Puerto Rican author, but I could not and unhauled it as recently as well.

You are by far my favorite book reviewer, if only because I think your tastes are as close to mine as possible. I heartily agree about Ready Player One, I did enjoy it but it's nothing I want to go back to over and over, and I feel it included some really interesting elements that ended up abandoned in the end. And yes Miss Peregrine! It was a kind of cool gimmick, but I just remember feeling overall bored by the lack of stories. On the other side I've picked up some excellent books based on your reviews that I otherwise hadn't heard about (Bone Gap, Station Eleven, Vicious). Thanks for your videos!

The most frustrating thing about Miss Peregrine’s is that it SHOULD have been great. Kids with powers, boarding school, etc. And in the first book, I felt like the photograph gimmick did work to some extent, even though I was still so bored by it that I had to listen to the audiobooks because every time I picked up the physical copy I would fall asleep. But in the subsequent books it felt like he was trying too hard to weave a narrative around a bunch of creepy pictures rather than write an intriguing and engaging story. Also, I could not agree more re: TOG and ACOTAR. I don’t get the hype, and the more I hear people hyping them the more petty I get about my dislike of them. Whatever. Salt is yummy. 😂
@mynameismarines
@mynameismarines 6 лет назад
RIGHT. There was so much there that was awesome in theory and it just... fizzles. I can only imagine that the gimmick gets more gimmicky as the series goes on. I mean, there is only so much you can DO. Okay, right? Like I'm glad we can be salty, petty and delicious together.

The first one is like, so much better than the second and third, and that is NOT a compliment. The pacing was garbage, and everything cool about the premise was absolutely wasted on the most terrible execution of a great idea I've *ever seen.* But more than how boring and mediocre they are... everyone loves them? Even though the second book is narratively pointless? Somehow Kell and Lila are like, couple goals even though Kell is probably the most boring protagonist I've ever read and Lila is so incredibly Not Like Other Girls that it's painful to experience. I could go on, but I will rein myself in.
@USAGIRLS01
@USAGIRLS01 6 лет назад
Totally agree with you. The 2nd book is pure filler and the plot really starts 30 pages before the end? (Bonus: it ends on a cliffhanger which means bad writing) First one was average action fantasy but the second book is so boring it made me fall asleep so many times. And I didn't even try to read the third one. Still, the premise was so interesting...I feel let down. At least Throne of Glass somehow has a plot? I guess? I dnfed it after the third book, I totally lost interest in the series but it feels to me there are more things happening than in the Shades of Magic series.

Sorry, I promise I’m trying to say this in a nice, non-malicious way even though it might not sound that way. Thanks, from a visual learner 😊

my thoughts on the list you provided, based on the books I've read (my taste in books as a teen weren't the greatest lmao) 1.) maybe it's the social circles i'm in (both online and IRL) but I often forget that Fifty Shades and Twilight actually had legitimate, unironic fans. i was in the target demographic when twilight first came out and read it only to be disappointed by how much of a bland slog (not to mention, as you said, racist, sexist, poorly written, and abuse as romance) the series was; i hated 50 shades for exactly the same reasons you did: abusive relationship masquerading as romance, poorly written and everything else you said too. 2.) Much like Twilight, I read City of Bones when O was in the target demographic as a teen. It was a fairly derivative take, and was executed in a horribly unoriginal way which was disappointing because, despite being overwhelmingly plotless (imho), I somehow found the first three books super engaging despite not relating to Clary and outright not liking Jace. Everything that wasn't Clary/Jace related was actually ok. I have no fondness or nostalgia for this series, despite loving the covers and small pockets of worldbuilding. 3.) I took a writing class at my local library and met Jay Asher. Too bad I wasn't invested in reading 13 Reasons Why because he seemed like a nice guy. 4.) Weirdly enough I'm the opposite of you regarding Sarah J Maas' writing: I actually enjoyed it and found it lush/poetic. Despite that disagreement, I did find her characters forgettable. Furthermore I couldn't tell anyone apart because everyone acted/spoke alike plus the morality focused on the main character in a really unrealistic way. The hype doesn't make sense to me, at least for this series. 5.) I wish someone else had written The Selection because the premise intrigued me but the worldbuilding made absolutely zero sense and was so poorly explained that the worldbuilding seemed like a different story than the plot of the actual story. .

I love watching your reviews. You are very articulate and opinionated. But you dont just hate on books, you bring receipts which is refreshing. You add a very critical eye to the community that I think it needs. People often tend to ignore problematic elements of their favorite things and instead just praise it for their enjoyment while taking an aggressive head in the sand approach towards other critical readers. I just wanted to say thank you for your insights in the book community.

My list of popular books that wasn't my cup of tea Disclaimer: it's just my preference, please don't flog me xD 1. Twilight Saga 2. The Mortal Instruments Series 3. 50 Shades 4. Anna and the French Kiss 5. Sarah J. Maas Books 6. Caraval 7. Nicholas Sparks novels (not all of them though) 8. Insurgent and Allegiant 9. HP and the Cursed Child (I *refuse* to accept it as canon) 10. The Fault of Our Stars 11. Vampire Diaries 12. The Cruel Prince Edit: Whelp, after reading 3 books, I'm gonna add Coleen Hoover's books here cuz O.M.G.
@Hana-ty7kt
@Hana-ty7kt 5 лет назад
Caraval was pretty awful. The concept was very interesting, but the author was so concerned with adding twist after twist, that the characters felt like entirely different people. It's okay to add plot twists to enhance the mystery, but not to the point that the characters are no longer recognizable. Because of that, I was unable to get into the romance, and I wound up despising the sister.

The moment I realized that what I was reading was “basic” was when I finished ACOWAR. I couldn’t deal with any YA for awhile after that. I tried Throne of Glass, thought it was okay. But my problem is that these books are praised to be the best of the best of YA. Like we can do better.

I really did like a lot of the missions and just the action adventure piece of it, but man, there were a lot of issues with the representation and just the density of the writing turned me off. I get why, if someone just kind of got lost in the adventure, the other stuff might have been overlooked! I appreciate you approaching my review this way. As I mentioned, usually I get fans of RPO that are very defensive!

As a woman of the 80s Ready Player One was extremely familiar to me, and the plot points that were confusing for younger readers were implied by the order of the pop culture references. In short, you had to be there to get the War Games, Tron, Dungeons and Dragons, No Batteries Included, and Love Bug stuff in the plot that's nit overtly stated. It's a definite shortcoming of the book.

These are books that get very mixed reviews. I read Twilight as a teenager and to be honest it grew my love for reading, but I recognise all the issues you have with it. The thing is, one can see such issues when they are an adult/experienced reader, issues that create a pattern for what young adults are reading and how they create their views, but when you are a young adult or new reader, you don't realise the lasting impression books leave you with and just think of the enjoyment level of such an addicting story (which it is,call it trash, guilty pleasure or whatever). Thus, I can see both why people love it or hate it. (I hope this makes sanse and it's not just rumbling).
@mynameismarines
@mynameismarines 6 лет назад
I totally get what you mean! We definitely grow as people, we learn, we become more critical as consumers, etc. I think that I very rarely see young girls defending Twilight in this day in age. Mostly, it's people who enjoyed Twilight as teens and are STILL defending it. I'm just like... but we've grown. We can recognize that even if we weren't able to see the really harmful stuff in this story then, we should be able to see it now. We can adjust our thoughts and opinions accordingly.

Mosquitoland is my Twilight, literally my least favourite book of all time. I think the only book you mentioned that I read was 13 reasons why and you're spot on about it. It just used suicide as a plot device for a story that didn't have any substance. Aaand now it's a whole show...

Yeaaaah Mosquitoland was rough and was definitely one of those books that the more I thought about it, the less I liked it. Now imagine that Mosquitoland was a huge pop-culture phenomenon that grown ass people insisted on defending to get a clear idea of how it's like to have Twilight be your Twilight lol. I read 13 Reasons because I was like "everyone is talking about this show." After I finished the book I was like WHAT WHY IS THIS HAPPENING and I did not watch the show.

Marines!!! I love how eloquent you are with the words!! I wish I had that type of skill. As for a popular book I didn't like, I did not love Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. For me to was the way the story was told, there were flashbacks that I just didn't really care about and I just wanted to get to the main part of the story, and even that was kind of bland for me.
@mynameismarines
@mynameismarines 6 лет назад
Aw, that one is sad for me. I love Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Laini Taylor's books, though, are ALL very badly paced. They are slow as molasses because her writing is so rich that it weighs everything down. In DoSaB, if you don't fall in love with the writing or with the very over-the-top romance of Karou and Akiva, I'm not convinced the plot is fast or strong enough to carry the story. Because I'm like HERE for flowery, thoughtful writing like Laini's, this book was a treat. I also love how she leans into so many cliches and makes them enjoyable for me. Such a good time.

I mean, as much as I love her, I would say that if you didn't like the first book, you prooooobably wouldn't like any of the others? She has the same consistent style which results in consistent problems: beautiful writing, slow pace, plot caught in the crosshairs.
