I second this! Please, please, please! I’m on disability but I strive to do the best I possibly can per my budget. Would love some affordable tips. My pupper has nicer products than I do and I’d like to be able to afford sushi once in awhile. 😘
Great idea! I'm doing what I can to give my pup the best life, but it can be tricky to do so without breaking the bank.😕 Especially since I also have 4 human kids to feed healthily too lol.
I do feed kibble to my dogs, but I feed a high quality kibble and supplement with some raw and fruits and veggies! I'm not exactly opposed to proper e-collar types of collars when used correctly, I just don't like the huge range in quality of them. Cheaper ones do Shock and hurt OR malfunction, then Extremely expensive ones work like TENS unit (physical therapy stimulation, doesn't shock or hurt) and are better, but like I said WHY spend so much money when you could get your dog a trainer at that rate? Putting in old fashioned work may take longer, but I found I bond with my dogs more.
I'm currently using a pill for flea prevention, but I'm going to stop using it. I was bullied into it by my veterinarian when I first got my puppy but I recently bought Wondercide and I'm going to use that instead. #commentchallenge
Buying 4legger shampoo today actually from your bath time with fin ♥️♥️♥️ love these videos! Trying to take better steps to help my little pup live healthier. Much love from NY♥️
One thing I will say is a lot of people are afraid of "chemicals" in products (both for humans and pets) but like every one of my chemistry professors has said... EVERYTHING is is made of chemicals. Even simple things like coconut oil has a scientific name. I've seen people lose their minds and be afraid of chemicals listed under their scientific name only to find out it's green tea, or rose hip extract. Many people got upset that a company changed their 'all natural' shampoo when they didn't. They just had to legally list everything by its scientific name which changed the wording but not the product. All I can say is, don't blindly be afraid of everything that's unfamiliar or just because you "can't pronounce it". Do your research and find what's best for you and your needs. "I don't use products with ingredients I can't pronounce" is a saying that drives us chemists bonkers lol. Education, not fear mongering
@@703jay4 I am commenting 4 months later, but if someone reads and wonders, dogs can handle bacteria that humans can't so that is not something to worry about. (Do research for a more scientific response)
I’m watching your videos as prep for our first puppy in a month and they’re very helpful. I didn’t know about the rawhide bone things being bad nor did I realize how unhealthy big box kibble is 😲
M B how exciting!!! I know you’re gonna do awesome with your new pup (bc you’re already trying to learn BEFORE bringing home), that’s awesome. Send me any questions you have! @rachelfusaro on IG and FB
Comment Challenge: I used to give my puppy kibble but now she is on a raw meat food diet and the vet showed us the results!!! she is much healthier than the average dog!!!! thank u rachel!!!💗💗
I used to give rawhide bones to my dog before and thought it was ok for her but now I know I am not giving her those anymore and will pay a bit more for better quality and healthier natural treats and bones.
Your advice on the flea medicine in that myth videos changed my mind totally! I studied and studied and now I only use natural alternatives like food grade Diatomaceous earth and other things! Thank you Rachel.
I actually used to give my dogs extremely big and expensive stuffed dog toys that they ripped up in seconds. Then my big dog threw up one day and I realized she swallowed some stuffing from the toy. Now I only get them appropriately sized dog toys that have little or no stuffing at all.
My dad loves extendable leads but I hate them and have had a really hard time convincing him not to use them for the new puppy I'm getting 1 week today and this vidio has helped me convince him from definitely getting an extendable lead to buying both so we can choose when we are about to go on walks. Thank you and I hope you have a beautiful day
I used to buy anti-tick and fleas chemical-based products (sprays, “spot on”, collars, chewable pills). Now I buy Wondercide🙌🏼 Also, I’m definitely going to buy the Kin + Kind Ear cleanser (thank you for that❤️)
For me I only find retractable leashes useful when I don't want to use a log line or I need some more distance when training as well as getting more room on a already trained dog that can be off leash when hiking or biking. It makes it more easier because there isn't rope dragging.
Hi, Rachel! Love your videos. They've been so helpful with our Goldendoodle puppy. She is in the chewing phase. What's a good alternative to the nylabone? She loves that thing! I want her to be safe and healthy.
We used to buy those plastic bones that develop sharp edges which are dangerous. Those are definitely not something we will give our new dog when we get one. Unfortunately, we recently lost both of our dogs within 1 months time. Our hearts are broken, but we’re filling our days and hearts with a foster for now. We are also watching lots of your videos as well as some others and learning so much so that we can be the best possible dog parents when we get our new dog. Thanks for all your helpful tips, we’re learning so much!
Hi Rachel, how do you feel about Kongs and "meal" feeding from them with "raw" foods? (raw as in like fruits, peanut butter, dehydrated freeze dried foods, etc) Thanks
christina vuong while I wish they weren’t made of plastic and rubber, I do love Kong’s for some dogs I prefer to freeze the food in them to make it last longer. Raw goat milk is a great liquid to add!
🚩Comment Challenge!🚩 I used to buy my oldest German shepherd, who is now six, those giant cheap rawhide bones that I thought she loved! Just recently found a lot buried in her favorite digging spot. Brought back the memories of her old love for digging. Also I still currently use highly processed shampoos so will be making the change soon. Sadly still use kibble because my dad does not agree with all-natural diet but we do add in some fresh ingredients thanks to your advice! 💙
chilegirl347 I really like using kongs, filling meals in it with something liquid - like raw goat milk and freeze it! I’m uploading a video on this ASAP!
What about DIATOMACEOUS EARTH for lawn prevention of fleas/ticks? We have heartworm issues down here in Puerto Rico - any natural selections of prevention?
What would you recommend for someone who can’t afford to feed all raw?

I disagree a little with the flex line. Max uses it when we walk in places where he can run around, but I only use it for “fun times” whereas some people ALWAYS use it. That’s the mistake. Because a flex line doesn’t teach your dog anything, whereas a leash would be the best option, but with puppies, they often can’t concentrate, so I often carry both. Max is 6 months and he know the difference. If he’s wearing a leash, he has to walk nicely by my side, and if he wear the flex line, he can roam and do whatever. But I recommend only using the flex line if your dog deserves it. When used correctly, a flex line can be amazing. Just never use it in busy places. And the “no pull” rule of corse is the same with every leash.
I used to use a flexi leash for that same purpose when we walk at a trail with my one dog who has amazing recall and isn't running off after other dogs yanking himself at the end of the leash. It got dropped and broke though and I just never got another, wasn't worth it. On the other had though, my other dog, she would Never be on one. I actually had a chihuahua on a flexi lead rush up and bite my (leashed) pit bulls chin and made it bleed! All while the owners desperately trying to reel him in, while my dog is just standing there looking like what's that dude's problem?! Oof then don't even get me started on the Husky in a harness And flexi lead that barreled down my dog. lol There's definitely a time and place for use of one, and some dogs who just never should. I did have a bad experience with one looong ago resulting in a terrible deep rope burn in the palm of my hand that put me off them for a while, but that was poor decision/human error.
Savannah K it’s so irresponsible to have an aggressive dog on a flex line. My puppy Max is only 6 months, and we use a regular leash more and more and every day he is taken off leash, so he’ll never think “this is my chance to run” but rather, “if I walk nicely, I get more freedom”. I would never let him do that if he had issues with other dogs. He is a teenager, but his recall is still excellent, because I prioritised that command over any other command and train it every single day. So when he is off leash, he will run around like a crazy, but saying his name 1 time, he’ll be right at my side. I used the flex line a lot when he was a little puppy, and I recommend using it with puppies because it’s hard for them to concentrate, and their walks really should be mostly fun times. Btw if you ever have trouble with a recall, just run from him every time he doesn’t respond immediately. It’ll trigger his chase instincts and make him feel that if he doesn’t come, you’ll be gone, so he’ll be a bit anxious of losing you.
I used to use retractable leashes before I knew what the fuck I was doing. I hate those things now. They give you no opportunity to train the dog certain things. The dog can all the sudden pull really hard and it goes all the way out and the dogs neck is being damaged.
Rachel! Thank you so much for you super duper amazing amazing videos. So so so so so helpful! Our puppy is 10 weeks old and we have purchased all your recommended kin+kind products. Do you think we should give our pup the preventative anti flea and tick pills still? Many thanks xoxox
I use Dr. Bronners Castille Soap on myself because it has so few ingredients. Idk if you’ve heard of it but it is the soap with TONS of text on the bottle. One shower I noticed it said you can use a few drops on your pet. It’s not specially formulated for pets. Thoughts?
We are getting a goldendoodle in the next couple of months. We live in the “country” in south Mississippi, it’s always hot so it’s flea season year round basically.. Fleas and ticks are very common here. We have fields of tall grass and woods surrounding our house. Squirrels, raccoons, and deer that carry both fleas and ticks. I’m afraid to not use commercial flea treatment and have my dog get fleas from going outside if the natural stuff doesn’t cut it. Have you ever had your dogs get fleas despite the natural sprays?
I used to give my Frenchie and goldador grain free kibble. Now I’m getting a new goldador and looking for ways to give it a really good life. So I’m going to try the Stella and chewy raw coated kibble with blueberries or some watermelon in its food.
Were getting our puppy this weekend. We are definitely doing raw with him. One thing I learned from your channel was the natural remedies for tick and flee! #commentchallenge
Something I had not even thought about before finding my perfect puppy. (Most of my life I have had rescue dogs and worked through any "issues" they might have come with but I have since had a spinal cord injury so this puppy will be being trained by me to be my mobility service dog. I couldn't take a chance on a dog with psychological or physical issues that could not stand up the the rigorous training that she will need to do over the next two years) Here is the surprise though, The purchase contract with the breeder specifies that I MUST feed the dog the food and supplements that she feeds her dogs or the 3 year health guarantee is void. Yup, I have NO SAY in what I feed her. Now, this breeders dogs are in excellent health and so are the puppies but having gotten most of my dogs from shelters or just word of mouth that a dog needed to be re-homed, I never even thought that you wouldn't be able to decide what to feed your dog. It's expensive and it is a top quality kibble plus additional supplements for the first 3 years. I will be using dehydrated, single ingredient training treats.
How effective has the natural flea and tick prevention been for your dogs? I'm from Australia and want to protect my pup from not just fleas and ticks but also paralysis ticks and at the same time I do not want to give them poison chewable it's like being in a rock and a hard place. Please tell me has this natural spray worked for you always?
#commentchallenge I’ve never personally owned a dog but all my family dogs have been given flea medicine and I honestly never thought that it was possibly harmful and thought it was the only way. Excited to look into that more so thank you.
Safety first -- oh be careful what size toys you give a dog. Yeah, it's possible for a dog to mistakenly swallow a ball that's smaller than your typical tennis ball. Another thing is to make sure a ball is made of non-toxic material. Also don't let the dog shred any of the material off of a toy. Love this video. Wow, you have quite the high standards! You mean you do brush their teeth daily? Finally, someone else realizes this is important. Their teeth build up bacteria just like our teeth. Once daily will manage their teeth. That so prevents gingivitis and periodontal disease. That in turn helps prevent systemic diseases. Okay so how exactly do you keep your entire house flea free? One more question -- Got any tried and true beneficial supplements you like?
Bonnie Hundley this is awesome, love your tips!!! Keep sharing these, it’s really helpful to everyone seeing this Flea free is so so so hard in my area. I like nematodes and diatomaceous earth
I know I’m a little late but I’m about to get a puppy so what would you say would be the average price for a raw diet per month( I’m a huge fan)🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🤪🤪🤪🤩🤩🤩
#CommentChallenge Kibble, canned food, Nylabone (recommended by vet over antlers) and the list goes on. I've learned soooo much over the last 15 years.
#commentchallenge I used to give my dogs highly processed dog kibble but now I still use kibble only because one of my dogs is allergic to raw meat but i feed them health extension dog kibble
Hey Rachel! Sorry for not making it to the premier again :( However, I still REALLY enjoyed this video and wanted to let you know that you’re amazing ❤️ Also, for the #CommentChallenge I’m guilty because I used to give my dog rawhide bones because someone told me that dogs liked them and they were healthy for them too :( I guess we all make mistakes
TRAILMIX _ GRAPEDOG it’s ok! On both things We all learn. I linked a video about rawhides in the description of this video (near bottom) - def. check that out. I think you’ll be blown away!
One. Thing i will never get for my future dog are these chewy stcks sold at Safeway. They are a reddish browwn color and i believe there's 4 to 6 in a pkg. I really believe my Shih Tzu chewrd off a large piece of one and somehow got a blockage She couldn't eat or even drink water. In the end i had to have the vet euthanize my sweet EmiLee Anne. She was only 9 yrs old. I loved her so much and miss her beyond words! Please becareful with chewy treats or what have you.
Soft rubber toy for puppies. We still have it but we don't use it anymore because our dogs can just eat big pieces of it. I don't even know why they made this product even puppies get swollen big pieces of it. Ours was blue and they said it was supposed to be a brush cleaner toy. What a big lie never clean my dog's teeth like its supposed to do. I would never use my dogs ever again is doggie toothpaste you can get for my pet store. I have used only two toothpaste products for dogs. Reason why I never use any more talkative paste from the store. I searched and searched and found two ingredients that you only need and the cheap way. Baking soda and coconut are the two ingredients you only need for your toothpaste for your dog. Product I would not be able to use because I think it's abusive. The only way I use it before because our first dog we ever had was a puppy and we never knew how bad it was to use on your dog. Product is frequency stop dogs from barking remote. Ours was black with three modes on it. First move was flashlight and second mode was high frequency to stop a dog from barking. The the list mode that has a red and high frequency and It'd supposed to keep away aggressive dog. Why I stop using this product because it's freely to our frequency that will throw in my dog's ear and make them go deaf. so I stopped using it started to make my ears ring. I only kept it because of the flashlight mode. The third mode is useless. Doesn't work but only works with a dog that's not aggressive and barking. I don't like the third mode because I don't want my dog to be afraid of me and to start wanting to go away from me. Useless product for me. These are the only products that I don't want to use anymore for my dogs. After learning that these are not safe to use.
Should I listen to a vet or a RU-vidr, can you understand why these choices are so hard , if kibble is so bad why would they invent so many different brands, some people have a budget and I understand it's our responsibility to know what comes with having a dog, we all as pet parents want our dog to be healthy as possible but sometimes we need guidance the right info and I thank you for giving your own opinions
We have some bones leftover those big huge bones did you have some meat in them would like them like the meat and then we is it from out the moon I feel it up with the food the dog food
6:25 . It seems garlic is poisonous to dogs and you say giving some to yours. Should not at least give a warning, since many people had issues giving garlic to their dogs. Just for your video to stay on the cautious side and remain an informative, helpful safety information, which will not contain advises that could lead animals to the vet?
Mija you are not being a good citizen by not sharing that brands that we are not supposed to use.. you have to lay it out for others not to do the same mistakes that what being straight out about.
Surprised you don't have a video titled "Why I don't vaccinate my dogs" "think about dogs in the wild, they don't get vaccinated" hate that whole dogs in the wild excuse
Will you please do a video about crate training an older dog. We bought a 6 month old schnauzer mix and we think he may have been abused or stuck in a crate all day at his other home
If you have any good tips and tricks 2 years later please share! I rescued a super sweet pitbull back in September. However she is super afraid of kennels. I would love to start crate training her to have her own little den
I know you're all about shopping local, but I'd love a favorites video from you! For everything.. even the repeats, treats, bandanas, toys, collars, leashes, bath stuff, first aide products, brushes, etc.
@@RachelFusaro We give her kibble which the first two ingredients are raw chicken and chicken meal, and give her wet food that's good for her coat, but we also give her pumpkin, though i'll try to convince my parents to search for raw goat milk, thanks!
rhian valentine yes!! That was mind blowing for me when I first heard about dogs getting seizures on traditional flea meds It made sense once I dug in. Those chemicals kill living things that are extremely resilient, how couldn’t it harm dogs! It’s tough here in Texas though, we have fleas in a big way, so I always tell people to choose their battles pix11.com/2019/07/22/side-effects-risk-of-some-flea-and-tick-medications/
That's a whole lot of fear mongering in that.. Most dogs do absolutely fine on those with no issues at all. When dogs have had issues, it's due to an underlying risk that has become identifiable dogs already (talk to your vet, who knows your dog). I would seek credible, scientific sources rather than supporting fear mongering sources. It does no one any good and people become unnecessarily super frantic (like with the "grain free" issue).
Hi Rachel! Great video. Question! What do you use for heart worm? I made the switch to natural flea and tick...but I also want to make sure he's protected in a healthy way against heart worm if possible. Thank you!
One i dont agree with is the retractable leash, now i will state that my dog is not really a puller or hyper dog, and when she does get zoomies i can let her off the leash at home. the reason I have a retractable leash is because i cannot physically walk far, so to take the dog outside i have to use a scooter, the scooter cannot go onto the grass very well, the retractable leash allows her to roam the yard to do her business, now as i said I CAN let her off the leash at times, but if there are other dogs around i cannot, or if the landlord is around. That is the only reason i have a retractable leash. If you have any other suggestions to that i am open to hearing them tho!

Getting a puppy this weekend. I watched most of your videos but may need extra advice during the process. How can I contact you for advice and guidance?
I thought rawhides were safe.... So eager to research more! Not planning on jumping quickly to purchase anything labeled "for dogs" on store shelves soon!
NO, NO, NO extendable leashes!!! Anytime that I meet a NEW dog or puppy owner who’s new to the whole thing of dog ownership, I do my best to educate them about the dangers of extendable leashes. One big reason is that the dog is then in controls not the owner. (I have about 10 items on my list!!) and one that Rachel mentioned has happened to me. That is, I adopted a 9-month-old dog with very little leash training and socialization and bought an extendable leash. Sometime later, I went on a walk with a friend on a gravel trail. My friend made a wide sweeping gesture that freaked out my dog who started to run (I had let go of the brake on the leash) in all directions which ended up in her wrapping the leash around my legs. That made me fall on the gravel and end up with small pieces of same embedded in my knees. Into the trash went that extendable leash!!
