I have a question about my zebra succulent. Its outside leaves are brownish-black, but the inner leaves are green. What is causing this to happen and how can I prevent it from happening again.
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 7 лет назад
The dark brown leaves on the zebra plant could be due to two factors: 1) lack of fertilization or 2) root rot caused by over-watering. To prevent this from happening, you can try to add a balanced cactus and succulent fertilizer (depending on the type you choose, you may fertilize the plant once a month with a water-soluble fertilizer or once every three months with a slow-release fertilizer). Water the zebra plant only when the soil is dry and if kept outdoors with filtered sunlight, you should only water about once a week to every ten days.

Is it okay to plant succulents and cacti in the same container? and do they require the same type of soil or is it different for each one? looking forward to your next vedio (:
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 8 лет назад
+Cynthia Gutierrez Thank you for your comments! As a general tip, it is best to plant succulents together that share the same water and light conditions. Succulents survive better in filtered sunlight and tend to dry out faster than cacti, which can survive with minimal water. Both cacti and succulents need a well-draining cactus mix that does not contain peat moss. Peat moss is too acidic and holds too much moisture. I use a cactus mix that contains pumice, perlite, mycorrhizal fungi, coarse sand, fir bark, time released fertilizer.

This is a wonderful video and has cleared many of my doubts as regards to succulents and specially haworthia succulents. Kindly advise how to propagate haworthia succulents. And if we don't have windows facing North or West facing then where do we keep the plant indoors.
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 5 лет назад
Thank you for watching our video! You can propagate offsets or "babies" from Haworthias by removing them at the side or base of the plants. Then use a well-drained succulent mix without any peat moss. Peat moss is too acidic and retains too much moisture. Give the propagated succulents bright, filtered sunlight and wait about 3 to 4 days before watering them. East facing windows are fine. Make sure there is plenty of air circulation indoors. If possible, you can rotate the succulents from indoors to outdoors for natural air and filtered sunlight. We recommend you rotate plants about once every two weeks.

During the winter in the north east I obviously cannot keep these plants on the sunny west window because of the cold. How do succulents respond to LED Natural Daylight bulbs?
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 7 лет назад
Succulents need a minimum of 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day. LED Natural Daylight bulbs will not be sufficient enough for succulents to grow healthy. To help succulents thrive indoors, you would need special grow lights or full-spectrum horticultural light bulbs that provide and send out more of the colors contained in the spectrum of natural sunlight. Place grow lights about 8-12 inches away from your succulents. You can always adjust the grow lights as needed for your plants.

Could you water a succulent container garden on a video so that we can see exactly how much water you use or do you have a round about amount you use. I created a bird bath succulent garden last summer, but had to move it indoors in October since I live in 4 seasons weather. My poor garden is on its last leg and I can't figure out why. The leaves of some of the plants are flimsy and have brown spots, and they have gotten very weak and leggy... please help these poor lil guys, :-) any advice would be greatly appreciated as I put a ton of time and spent a lot of money on it. thanks in advance!!
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 6 лет назад
Thank you for watching our video! It is difficult to determine exactly how much water as containers come in different sizes. We recommend watering succulents that are outdoors once a week until the water runs out the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. If there is a saucer underneath, be sure to empty the water so the plants do not rot from excess water. Then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. If kept indoors, we suggest watering succulents about once to twice a month depending on light conditions or the type of container they are in. For example, terra cotta pots dry out faster than glazed, ceramic containers, so the watering instructions will be different. When colorful succulents are kept indoors and then turn weak and leggy, they may need more natural sunlight and better air circulation. If you cannot keep the plants outdoors due to very cold temperatures, you can either use a grow lamp indoors or use a frost cloth to protect the succulents outdoors. Hope this advice helps!

nice video.pls can u tell more about the short snake plant(white edged) and it's care.
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 6 лет назад
Thank you for watching our video! The short "Snake Plant" grows to about 8 to 10 inches tall and produces several offsets. This plant can thrive in either filtered sunlight or shade. If kept indoors, water about once a month. If you keep it outside in the right lighting conditions, you can water about once a week. Always allow the water to drain through the soil and wait for the soil to dry before watering again. This process helps prevent root rot.

You mention several times that people should bring some of the plants outside once a week, but you don't mention for how long? Is a morning long enough? A whole day? Or are you saying keep it in for a week, then outside for a week?
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 3 года назад
Thank you for watching our video and asking great questions. Generally, you can rotate succulents once a week for about 3-4 hours long. We recommend morning sun because when indoor plants are moved directly into hot afternoon sun, this process may cause the plants to dry out or burn.
@margaretadorno4856
@margaretadorno4856 3 года назад
@@CaliforniaCactusCenter thank you for your response! This is very good news. Does it mean that if I can’t offer a succulent plant quite enough light indoors, I can bring it out once a week for 3-4 hours and that’s enough to compensate? Also, sometimes when leaves feel mushy to me I assume that’s because it’s had too much water. But when I take out the plant the roots are dry. Can leaves get mushy from too little water? Thank you! Can’t wait to visit your store.
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 3 года назад
@@margaretadorno4856 Thank you for your questions. Yes, rotating plants outdoors for 3 to 4 hours of filtered sunlight should be sufficient for indoor succulents. If you can take the plants outdoors for natural air and sunlight more than once a week, it would be beneficial as well. To answer the second part of your question, watering too little tends to make leaves more brittle and dry. The best way to diagnose the problem is to email us a photo of the plant that has mushy leaves. You can email us at california.cactuscenter@gmail.com and we will respond as we can. Thanks!

the house plants that need to be taken outside once a week for full sunlight and for air circulation.. can this be done in the cold wintery months?
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 7 лет назад
During the winter, you can bring the succulents indoors and place them near or on a sunny windowsill. The best places for succulents indoors is where there is sufficient sunlight (west or south facing) and air circulation. When the weather is warmer, you can relocate the plants outdoors and put them in filtered sunlight.

@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 8 лет назад
+Jayvee Chun Thank you for your comments! Sempervivums do very well in full or filtered sunlight, yet can tolerate some shade. It is true that if most succulents do not receive bright light, then the plants will become etiolated.

+Jayvee Chun I don't understand how a north facing window gets very little sun if at all. I'm not familiar with the word 'etiotating'. Live and learn.
@jayveejhonchun
@jayveejhonchun 8 лет назад
Generally, if you are in the North hemisphere, West and East facing windoes receive light during the noon or morning respectively. South receives all day light. North, non at all. Etiolation is when plants stretch to reach the light given insufficient levels. If makes them prone to disease as well as lose that tight rosette form.

I was wondering about the plants that need to go outside once a week: i live in canada and our winters can go as cold as -30 degrees celsius, what do i do to take care of these plants in the winter?
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 8 лет назад
To prevent frost damage, carefully cover the plants with a frost cloth, which can raise the temperature up to 10 degrees or you can use burlap, which will still allow the succulents to breathe and survive during the winter. You can also bring your potted succulents indoors during the winter and place them near a west or south facing window. When the weather is warmer, take them outdoors into a filtered sunlight area.

are there any succulants we should avoid? are all different species of aloe usable on burns?
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 6 лет назад
Thank you for watching our video! Euphorbias are poisonous succulents that contain a sticky white sap or juice. This succulent is one that people should be aware of when using it either as a container or landscape plant. The most common Aloe species that is generally effective and used for burns is the Aloe Vera or "Medicinal Plant". Another Aloe species is Aloe Arborescens that also has health benefits such as healing wounds and supporting the immune system.

Your plants look great. I have s baby and found that the leaves keep turning brown. What am I doing wrong
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 4 года назад
Thank you for watching our video! When succulents turn brown and soft, you need to check the soil and see if there is sufficient drainage to prevent root rot. Succulents that are not rooted need to develop a callous prior to planting them in a well-drained succulent mix. Keep succulents outdoors in a filtered area that is covered and protected from frost and extreme heat. Water rooted succulents about once a week if kept outdoors.

I have one of the last plant, or cactus, you showed with the flowers on top, except I bought one w a dead flower on top. I removed the dead flower. Will it come back? I do I care for this cactus? Thanks
@CaliforniaCactusCenter

Yes, when you remove the dead flower on top, the plant will re-bloom again. Most cacti like partial sun if kept outdoors and water about once every ten to 14 days. Water thoroughly and allow the soil to be completely dry before watering again.

Hello It’s 38 degrees in Michigan Are you suggesting these plants can go outside in the winter once a week? Yikes But thank you for sharing

Thank you for watching our video! When the weather gets very cold and to the mid to low 30s, it is best to keep succulents indoors near a bright sunny window or use a frost cloth to drape over the plants. We recommend a thin frost cloth that raises the temperature by about 10 degrees.

What happens if a put the echeveria near a window , but that window has a screen protector ? Do in have to bring it out?
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 8 лет назад
Thank you for your questions. If you put colorful Echeverias near a window that has a screen protector, the plants will begin to stretch. They will not look as compact and colorful. If you cannot place them outdoors in filtered sunlight, then place the Echeverias near a west or east facing window. Windows that face south tend to get too hot and may cause sunburn on the plants.

+California Cactus Center my echeveria is green

Dark green Echeverias tend to grow well in shade or filtered sunlight. If you place the plant near a window that is east or west facing, the Echeveria will still become leggy and not stay compact. You can rotate the plant outdoors to a filtered sunlight area about once a week for 3-4 hours.

hi, i like your video, your succulents are adorable. Can we plant moon cactus direct to the soil for propagation? thanks, im from manila.
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 7 лет назад
Thank you for watching our video and your interest! Moon Cactus lack the ability to produce chlorophyll. They must be grafted onto a base cactus to survive. Unfortunately, you cannot plant the moon cactus by itself into cactus mix for propagation. You can extend the life span of the moon cactus by re-grafting it onto a fresh base plant.

do you have a vid on grafting a moon cactus offset onto a base cactus? I have seen some videos and read articles on the procedure and have tried 2x but with no success. Thank you,

Hi, I need your valuable advice, my succulents leaf (baby) getting roots but not propagating. Placed in indirect sunlight with controlled water supply. Thanks
@CaliforniaCactusCenter
@CaliforniaCactusCenter 4 года назад
Thank you for watching our video! To help your succulents propagate, plant the succulents in a mix that drains well to prevent root rot. Make sure the soil does not contain peat moss, which is too acidic for succulents. Add fertilizer that helps plants grow and thrive. You can use any fertilizer for cacti and succulents. Provide filtered sunlight (partial sun) for succulents and water about once a week if kept outdoors.
