The results of dozens of myths is something people often get wrong. To the point where it might equate to the Mandela effect. Just recently someone left a comment on a video demonstrating phone book friction. With some light paraphrasing they said "Mythbusters had to use two tanks. And even then, it ripped at the spine, and pages went everywhere'' Which I was 100% sure didn't happen. So I went and found the clip, and replied to the comment with the link. To which they said something like "Wow...I'm so confused. I have a vivid memory of that scene happening.'' Other misremembered results include Break Step Bridge, Pennies thrown from the empire state building, Beating the breathalyzer, Beating the Bloodhound, Motorcycle vs Car eco friendly, Sprinter vs F1 driver, bullet deflection using magnets, ice bullet and tons more, but I'm tired of typing. But yeah, people say inaccurate things all the time, and follow it with ''Yeah, mythbusters did an episode on it.''
Childhood is believing Adam was a cackling, crazy mad scientist and Jamie was the friendly walrus that tagged along that made sure no one blew themselves up. Adulthood is realizing Adam was just a cool guy enjoying a cool job and the real crazy, unhinged mad scientist was actually Jamie all along.
And being an adult geek parent is knowing Jamie was the real crazy, unhinged mad scientist that made sure no one blew themselves up, to be more specific.
Jamie was the real crazy, he may me not as energetic as Adam but his comments while doing their experiments are borderline mad scientist vibes, still love them both
I made that pilgrimage basically on accident. My family was on vacation to San Francisco and I had the frying pan of realization hit me as we drove on the freeway. I saw Alameda signs that I'd seen in the show. I then looked up the address of M5 and, since my siblings and I were all fans, we convinced mom and dad to drive us there. I still remember the sign taped to the door thanking fans for stopping by, but reminding them it was a working business, so please don't knock, but feel free to walk around the area.
The fact that you even approached the idea of catching your own birds is nothing short of amazing. I would have written that idea off so fast. Truly shows your dedication to the method. In hindsight I would expect nothing less from you both! 😀
My ship used to pass the runway and we would stand on deck with binoculars watching your team filming. I noticed that your editors edited our ship out of every episode. Not that I’m surprised. It was a very weird looking ship. I did notice that the TV show Chefs versus City left our ship in as it came in behind the two stars, and then turned to the port. It didn’t look strange until it turns where you could see the side.
I feel like everyone involved with the show has generally been pretty good about busting "Mythbuster myths" as they gained popularity, like the myth that Adam and Jamie actually despise each other (they don't- they just always have dealt with each other on a professional level, not being 'friends' in a social setting).
Jamie coming out of the shop with a 6-barreled cannon pointed at me right after I rolled up would have made me first pee a little, then laugh until I couldnt breath. The vision in my head of what that looked looked like is fantastic.
Watching the show, it definitely did give the impression that there was multiple people there to help with building. Not so much that Adam and Jamie didn't do it, but that they had multiple assistants to operate heavy machines and such whenever they had to set something up. Maybe what I saw was just the film crew, I don't know.
I know at M5, Jaime had his own employees that would show up on camera time to time. Heck Kari was one of them in the first season as an intern. And not to mention the mytherns.
At the time of this post it was 552 comments. I did scroll through a large part, but not all of them. The fact that Adam continues to talk about how his own disabilities affect him, and how he tries to overcome them is refreshing. I am in a similar but not exact head space that Adam discusses on his videos. We're not privy to his actual home life, nor should we be, but the fact that he continues to put on camera his struggle and how he's dealing should be commended and pointed out. Find me another famous maker that gives you this much insight into their mental wellbeing. Plus who doesn't enjoy watching him walk around his shop talking to no one, but like there's 10 people there to give feed back. Truly my most favorite maker subscription.
I grew up watching you guys on Mythbusters and now as an adult I find myself here watching one of the Mythbusters talking about the show.....typing this thinking about how much all you guys made an impact on everything I do. I don't know how many times I've been able to answer someone's wild question of if something would work or could happen. All because you guys took the time to figure out the wild, funny, cool and gross myths. I just want to say thank you for all the great scientific childhood memories. RIP Grant
Thank you for taking us through a rough day in the shop. It's a relief knowing that I'm not alone in the frustration of planning, processing, and managing task switching & short term / long term project priorities and satisfaction.
man, i so miss MythBusters ... the oil and water of Jamie & Adam was such a great dynamic of the show. I'm so inspired to try and create stuff from MythBusters and everyone on the show
Thinking back to MYTHBUSTERS, I think my favorite, or one of my favorite episodes was one of the most simple. When you tried to fold a piece of paper more than seven times. You guys got a HUGE piece of paper, the size of your warehouse, and still couldn't fold it more than seven times. Crazy fun. Simple, but undeniable, and provable. Pure mythbusting at it's best.
One of my big issues at work has always been dealing with people who want to try to solve all the worlds problems all at once (this especially applies to software developers), rather than recognizing the things that they CAN take charge over instead of getting depressed over all the things that are beyond them to deal with or so frustrated with the overwhelming size of it all that they found it difficult to do *anything*. So trying to keep people practical and focused was a big issue for such people. You can to, from time to time, take them aside and pull them back down to earth, give them a narrow focus, and let them go. Adam's Monday story reminds me a lot of those people.
One I hear a lot is “Adam and Jamie hated each others guts and the show ended cause they couldn’t stand working together” and I used to just take that at face value. But once I started watching all your Q&A videos I realised that wasn’t really the case
Most "fun" projects often have an arduous task, moment, or two that usually makes people want to throw the whole thing out. However, when the project is complete we feel so much more accomplished having overcome any hiccups in our projects.
I never thought of it as a pilgrimage, but i stopped by for a picture of M5 one time I was in San Francisco too! I was surprised by just how small a shop it is!
I remember seeing it too and thinking, theres no way they would be able to do large builds, and film it too! And even doing outside experiments without dealing with pedestrians and neighbors. But I guess that's just the things they have to deal with.
@@badbirdkcthe very 1st few seasons of The Real World & Road Rules was the orgin in late 90's and it was so cool, till it became such sideshow as it is now
“Gear switching is hard”…yes, it is. I think it’s hard for all of us, but for the ADD/ADHD folks it can be amazingly hard. I think it’s so cool to be able to realize that and simply work within or around those confines. It’s even more cool that you talk about it. That’s incredibly helpful.
8:50 having the feeling of not getting ahead of anything is rough. I'm currently doing my PhD research and that is what I'm feeling everyday. Thank you for the inspiration Adam 🙂
i'm imagining jamie walking out with his big net cannon like that part in the TF2 meet the medic trailer when medic walks out of the door & birds are flying all around him & it's super dramatic
Mythbusters is one of my favorite tv shows, now when I watch a western movie and someone tries to shoot a rope with a gun and it breaks, I remember you guys busted that myth
I am sitting here in China, using a VPN to access youtube - I've been here many times and I've seen a lot of things - but the image of Jamie walking out with a cannon just as this Swedish family pulls up (ironically, I now live in Sweden AND I used to live in the bay area until last year) is the best image ever and I literally laughed out loud and probably confused my mother-in-law, who does not speak any English. Awesome. TELL me there's video or photos or SOMETHING of that moment...
I'm a mental health therapist, and though I'm not qualified to diagnose anyone with ADHD, it's good to hear you verbally acknowledge that! Haha! I didn't know if you knew. (also, fellow adhd-er) :) Thank you for modeling such self kindness, positivity and persistent in your vision/skills. You're an amazing human!
I have s few miscommunications for the Spanish version but i don't complain absolutely. It help me to get the scientific method in my school and life and i am Soo grateful for the time.
Not really related to this video but a question I think about a lot is, do brake rotors get hotter if you push them slow and steady or if you push them harder in an alternating on/off technique. Especially when going downhill
the polevault car episode.... it really happened a few years ago on nrth 635 freeway in Dallas....a restored 1970 c10 lost its frontu joint and hit a separation at a bridge and polevaulted forward end over end... i was a dallas firefighter on that accident.....
Surely one popular misconception is (or at least was) Adam and Jamie being good friends, whereas the reality was they were just co-workers and didn't associate with one another outside of the show/show related events.
And honestly looking back and watching the show it's pretty clear that that's exactly what their relationship always was. They were never buddy-buddy, but they worked super well together as professionals and got to share some extraordinarily cool experiences together and honestly I think I prefer that over them being BFFs
Those days when you feel like nothing’s getting done but your working your ass off. Those days lay a successful foundation for your next. We can all benefit from learning to step back from work, give it a night, then kill it the next day
Wanting to much of the day is something I really can relate to. Having two small children, time for hobby activities is scheduled and sometimes that just locks you up because you want to much from a day.
Hey Adam, Very Longtime Fan of the Show. I Grew up with Mythbusters *coff coff* 30 Years old now :P I cannot find for the life of me when you and Jamie ‘Attempted’ to Destroy a Running Car Engine with an Assortment of Breakfast Items. Egg in the Radiator, Ect. You 2 were Laughing so Damn Hard :) Do you remember that Day? Or are you able to elaborate? I know I’m not a Patrion, but thought I’d ask. Have an Awesome Day, so glad you still work on all sorts of stuff and share it with us!
Your tale towards the end about your own creativity and finding inspiration was lovely. I didn't have "crying because something Adam Savage said" on my 2023 bingo card. But it felt really familiar
the crap these guys would come up with during the shows was awesome... the biggest was a quad cannon paintball anti-aircraft gun. i could only imagine the crap they went through to get it into australia just for the last tour show in melbourne... was absolutely a blast to meet you guys as a vip, and get the gear... i am still waiting for jamie to use c4 to blow up the unbreakable glass from that tour.
What if you have a truck with no floor and birds were inside it? Like there's just a bar or wire rack for them to rest on but you electrify it to get them to fly. (Please don't hurt the birds.)
I was thinking about that "bird in a truck" episode the other day, and how hard it was for you guys to control the RC helicopter. Today conducting the same experiment is trivial today because of how far computer assistance has come in the RC hobbies.
That description at the end about gear switching is quintessential ADHD and I feel like all of us with it can empathize with that feeling. Totally correct though, can't change it, but understanding it does help. It's almost like mental paralysis! Big ol' short circuit in the brain about having all the things to do, all the things you could be doing, and not getting anywhere with any of it. So frustrating.
I can only imagine seeing the shocked look on those fan's faces when they see Jamie pop out with a giant PVC cannon! Do you happen to remember if they dived for cover? XD
I thought that Mythbusters was made at the old Alameda Naval Air Station. When the show was still in production, I attended a regular swap meet there and noticed the buildings and hangers that the show used.
As someone with ADHD it is comforting to know that Adam (a true pro) goes through the same issues I do when working on multiple projects after a break period
The pidgin truck made me wonder what would happen if you filled a truck with helium balloons. I know, random thought. Thanks again for doing what you do and being who you are.
The helium balloons would make the truck lighter since they are not pushing down like the birds were. The helium balloons rise since the helium is less dense than the surrounding air. Filling the truck with helium filled balloons would decrease the the overall density of the truck by displacing heavier air making it want to float in the air like the balloons would. The truck would still be too dense to float, but it would be lighter. Incidentally, the balloons themselves are not necessary for this experiment except as a way to contain the helium.
Adam, you remind me of Christopher Lloyd's beloved character in the Back to the Future movies, Doc Brown. Especially with the hair 😂 I love your channel 😊
Not really the same thing, but I have a similar issue when planning LEGO builds. I have four going right now and they're all different types. A collection of small things, one large display, one rebuild, one group project, and I find I'm okay bouncing between them. The problem I invariably run into is running out of steam on projects. If I just focused on one, I could see myself getting really tired of it and just abandoning it altogether. Bouncing around, to me, keeps it a little more fresh.
Hahaha! I LOVE that story with the visitors. 5:18>> Right!? The essence of so many fans’ feeling for Mythbusters. I bet they’d prepared for being disappointed as well. Just in case. To show up and “only” get some pics of the buildings. And then that happens. I get butterflies-excited on their behalf just thinking about it. 😄 Perfect. I identify with them. Even more so since I’m Swedish! Oh, this is great…
You have to have at least 5 projects on the go at once, that way when you hit a technical or mental roadblock on one, you can jump to the others. At least until you see the finish line on a particular project and have to go for the final push. Granted, that's when you aren't under a time crunch for a job. That's when a joy becomes a chore.
anyone who would be a fan enough of the show to wanna see the studio should know your and jamie's background... you guys have done so much special effect work and built so many things for movies and commercials. i mean you guys were just doing your jobs lol
Wow! Making that thing I love and covet... and moving on to the next thing... I relate on the deepest level. I build and fix everything... the ones I do for myself, esp the long term ones, are what I live for. I could totally hang in your shop... anyway, lots of love.
I hope someone sees this but the birds on Oahu are different. Birds here don’t move, except for cars sometimes. I am serious, it’s the strangest thing about living here.
When I was in High School I was in a CAD course and I was basically designed a battle bots style robot with a net shooter taser to short out other bots It was such a strange thing and was so far over the teachers head that I think I had it like 60% done and I still got an A. I wish I had them still. It never would have worked because their was no electrical plans it was just all the system placement. He just looked at it realized i bit of more than I could do on my own (my partner was off working on being a pop singer... did actually become one) and so I think he just gave me an A.
I love Mythbusters questions and answers. Does anyone know what ever happened with that Mythbusters reboot where they made a Game Show out of choosing the next hosts?
They did start a reboot with the winners and it was two guys (I don't know their names). But i think it got cancelled. The thing is it's just hard to replace the original hosts and fans weren't really up for it.
