They are rubbing mud on the cooking utensil to prevent soot( black unburned carbon) stick on the utensils after cooking with firewood. Easy to wipe the soot out when cleaning is done

I think it is mud. After cooking, the mud will be easily washed off the surface of the pot, making pot clean and shining again for another, cooking later.
