Episode 36: “Aya Ka Ne Forever: You are not alone!”
Jun Hee Kim, who had passed some time ago, has accomplished what she came back to the living world to accomplish. She settled things with her troubled daughter Mina (via Mouse), and confirmed that Mina’s will to live a full, meaningful life has been reaffirmed.
Now, Jun Hee’s time has finally run out, and Mouse’s time as Jun Hee’s portal to the living world has come to an end. Jun Hee returns to the spiritual world and bids Mouse farewell, thanking her for her services. After Mouse returns to the living world, Jun Hee is suddenly hit with the fact that her life is over. It is time for her to face the finality of death. And, for the first time since she originally died, she truly feels deathly alone. The powerful, unwavering stoic who was respected and feared in life, has to deal with her mortality in the empty, motionless prison of purgatory…the last hall before the uncertainty of the afterlife. The weight of her circumstance overwhelms her, and her heart freezes…
Meanwhile, her daughter in the living world comes to the same realization after achieving closure with her mother’s memory. She never properly grieved for her mother, who was taken from her life so suddenly. Mina avoided confronting her mother’s death for a long time by living a risk-taking, thrill seeker’s life…believing that commitment to a long life was a fool’s errand. You can lose your life at any second, so why invest in it?
However, her battle with her mother’s memory rejuvenated her love for life and the promise of tomorrow. True strength…true thrill…true life came from the dreams, desires, and bonds you fight hard to cultivate in the future. She understood this now. Unfortunately, the side effect of this new approach to life was realizing that her mother wouldn’t be there when she reached those dreams, desires, and bonds. The future she lived for would always be without her mother. The loneliness of her circumstance overwhelms her, and her heart becomes numb…
Fortunately, the support from two unexpected friends helps them take the steps they need to take to break free from their self-imposed prisons.
Jun Hee once had a best friend named Ayako Murasaki, whom she met in college. Ayako nicknamed the duo “Aya-Kane” (“Aya” from her own first name Ayako, “Ka-Ne” from the Japanese translation of Jun Hee’s family name “Kim” = “Gold” = “Ka-Ne”). Much to Jun Hee’s annoyance, they because extremely close.
Before Ayako passed away from illness, she had 2 daughters…the youngest of which was born only a week after Jun Hee’s own daughter Mina Kim. Ayako always wanted the two children to be friends one day, and keep the Aya-Kane sisterhood alive and well, but time and distance (Korea to Japan) didn’t allow them to really meet more than once (when they were babies). That was one of Ayako’s only regrets in life (she didn’t regret many things, because she was a total airhead)…even beyond the grave, Ayako still has hopes to make it happen…
…after all, Aya-Kane is forever! A bond that transcends death…a bond that transcends birth…
