If you destroy the nerves that run between the squid's eyebrows, as Senshi did, the squid's body will actually turn white in an instant. In Japan, this method of killing fish instantly is called ikejime. It is said that if the fish is treated in this way, it will stay fresh for a long time and be delicious to eat, and it will not cause unnecessary stress to the fish.
Kelpies look somewhat like horses but generally once you climb on their backs, they drown you and devour you underwater. The only reason Senshi didn't get eaten by Anne up until now is because he never climbed on her back before. In some Irish and Scottish legends, Kelpies are able to extend their backs to carry many riders or when people try to pet them, their hands stick to their fur and generally people need to cut off their hands or fingers to get free. Their hooves are usually reversed and they are also shapeshifters (they can change into non-equine forms) that inhabit lochs and eat human flesh.
so i knew that about kelpies because it was in the most recent season of Magus Bride, but i must have missed when Senshi said he had never mounted the kelpie before
@@FreshestAnime It's mostly just implied from the way he talks about riding her across the lake like it's an idea he had that he's been working towards.
It appears that this behavior in kelpies (at least in dungeon meshi) is a sort of instinct, anything that climbs on its back will be hunted much like how a common predator instinct is to hunt anything that turns its back and starts running (why you should always stand your ground against predatorial megafauna with the exception of polarbears in which you are FUCKED), a perfect example of waiting until prey is at their most vulnerable in order to strike, It otherwise fufils an omnivorous scavenger niche, becoming an oppernuistic predator of land-dwelling humanoinds/demihumans that may attempt to use it as transportation in the places it lives, its initial passivity may also aid in the idea that it is safe to climb on or is tame. Theoretically, so long as you don't climb on its back a Kelpie is otherwise a nonthreat to humans and can be safely hand fed, a novel experience, attempting to stop one hunting once someone has climbed on one is extremely dangerous. The reason as to why their tallow is so valued is because it likely contains a large amount of omega-3 fatty acids, having the best qualities of the most luxurious of fish oils due to being a water-dwelling species, the various beneficial properties of leviathan (whale) blubber can be found in Kelpie tallow, making it a highly valued product for soap making, perfume fixatives, and other magic items.
@@themushroominside6540kelpies can't fight on land, they make you get attached to it so you can climb on its back, then the kelpie takes you to the water where it can move freely. It's not an instinct to catch you off guard, it simply takes you to its territory.
If it wasn't apparent already, Laios' party are veterans. They might appear to be disjointed and wasting time at first since they're not constantly fighting but the way they progress is very realistic. They know shortcuts, safespots, where traps are, know how to avoid monsters and they only fight when necessary. When they do fight, it's swift, smart (usually) and precise so they don't waste too much energy.
Squids change the color of their body surface in an instant and hide, just like chameleons. Try watching some video. Their color changes in an instant. They project color all over their bodies by spreading colored cells through their muscles. When they die, their muscles lose strength and their bodies lose their color.
Sorry for my google translated English, more correct "a lot of colored cells pulled and expanded by their muscles, resulting in a change in their color of their body surface."
It's interesting to see that the MC party is actually experienced and has cleared the water level many times. Laios know the siren's song and Marcille detonated her spell in water to clear the fish. Meanwhile the other party got wiped out like noobs... again. Something tells me that's going to be a running joke. Eating the parasite was just nasty, tough it was probably something closer to a lamprey and not a tapeworm, but still. Also divine punishment to Laios for eating that thing raw.
SInce its cooked exactly like Kabayaki (Steamed then Grilled eel with sauce) I like to think of it as a species of dungeon dwelling eel that has taken on a parasitic niche loosing much of its external semblance to normal eels as a result, especially considering that it has bones which helminths do not have, like eels and other parasites, they themselves contain parasites.
Laios: Monsters are dangerous creatures. Also Laios: You never know what's going in monster's mind. Me: Err, you DO realize what you're keeping inside your sword for whatever reason, right?
Ah yes, because the sword mullosck can just bounce itself to try and cut him without a hand to hold it. It maybe a weapon, but it needs to be wielded to even do anything. So it’s stuck being a sword. Meanwhile Anne can literally bite your head off whenever.
It is considered by the Japanese that the reason Senshi tried to handle the kelpie alone was to make a memorial service. In Japan, since ancient times, people have shown respect for the carcasses of beloved animals by not leaving them behind but using them as food, tools, or clothing. Sometimes, graves are built or enshrined at shrines. Dogs, whales, and horses are examples.
I like how you instantly noticed that , Laois group is actually very skilled and they are all experienced adventurers soon you will know about their pass
broiling is essentially grilling with a close high flame for a short time. it's often used when doing thin cut glazed meat cause it browns and caramelizes the glaze. and the short cooking time means the meat will be cripsy on the outside but very juicy (in ovens people often use it for like finishing ribs or melting the cheesy top of a dish, etc)
So the Broiled Parasite's real life equivalent would be a Grilled Eel, or Kabayaki. The name of the chapter this episode adapted. There you go everyone. If you want something similar to what they shown at the end of this episode, it'll be Kabayaki.
@@enriqueortiz9093 Well, because of cultural difference some countries or religion have certain stuff banned for consumption. Many view Horse as a Pet or Companion similar to Cats & Dogs, so they don't consume it because of aversion. There are also some countries where Pig isn't consumed, because of either religious belief or they consider it filthy (as Pigs in those regions eat garbage from anywhere even drainage).
(Senshi let’s beard get cleaned, said it’s good, somewhere is a grim dark fantasy universe at a traditional as hell dwarven kingdom): it’s going in the book!!! Context: there is a meme for warhammer fantasy where any grudges or mishaps happened to the dwarves is recorded in a giant ass book. Commonly meme is used if an elf said something to them even with good/non hostile intentions.
Honestly, it was bound to happen & was about time for Laios to get some Comeuppance for all the turmoil he puts his party members through & have to endure with his adored monster affinity behavior
From side chapter: to the sirens they do eat mermen when they are babies. Merfolk lay eggs in hundreds so once hatch you would think a army exist. Nah, the sirens if they don’t get prey from adventurers they literally go after the hatched merfolk and eat them.
once again, the first and best in the Reaction Meshi circles~ they did another interesting truncation here, tightening up the time and stuff between a couple chapters to cover more ground. Now... I really, really can't spoil anything about everyone involved in today's adventure, but just know everyone recurs in this dungeon's expansive story. They really can't leave it off at the end of this season without disappointing a SHITLOAD of fans, so we'll see~ I'd suggest trying unagi kabayashi if you ever have the chance, skewered and grilled eel, it is SUPER fuckin' delicious, one of my favorite japanese dishes. Another detail that gets brought up in the side-comics is the habits of Kelpie's leading to visible warnings, such as entrails and guts floating on the water. Senshi is naturally appalled, saying that the liver and such are rich in iron and vitamins, but Laios brings up that they can also carry bloodborne diseases as well, and Senshi venerably reflects on this revelation and thinks wistfully of how clever Anne was~ one more thing, the porridge they had today on Laios' behalf was _Zosui,_ a kind of boiled barley porridge you can mix savories into, it's really good~ even better with mimic meat and a couple discreet fish eggs in there for texture, mm?
Broiled is practically grill in the oven. Its more of a US term. I got confused initially because it sounded more like boil but no there isn't any water involved.
I love how this episode is the opposite of episode 2. In ep 2, Marcille was kinda useless and Senshi was the star due to his knowledge & experience. In this episode, Marcille saved the day while Senshi learned a lesson. The tables turned. I also love how refreshing it is when it turns out Senshi doesn't always know everything. Ever since the beginning, he's always been the stable one, the helpful one, the dependable one. It's easy to label him as a one-note character, but turns out he's more than his dependable archetype. He's not a caricature; he is a genuine person with his own personality, strength, and weakness. Marcille is the same. She's initially portrayed as an annoying crybaby who doesn't really contribute to anything, but her power and her quirks really shines in this episode, proving that she *is* useful in the right environment. Laios is the same too; his hyperfixation on monsters which usually considered uselessly freaky turned out to be useful this time, when he warned Senshi about Kelpie's nature. It makes the characters' dynamic less of a cliche tropes and more of an authentic friendship covering each other's weaknesses with their strengths. I love this episode.
Octopi, squid, and cuttlefish have skin cells (chromatophores) that expand and contract, which allows them to change the color and patterns of their skin. When Senshi killed the Kraken, all of its skin cells must've stiffened in a way that turns it all white.
Team laios is actually pretty good skilled fighter too. Since they already fighting with the dragon. While new team never got there before. (...that's why i dislike animation team for this. They change small stuff before this episode to ruin it. for few second laugh.)
I'm worried about this other party. Things are going to come to a head at some point. But it is Laios' party's fault for not recognizing that they weren't dead.
If I remember correctly, there's a hotpot where you use horse meat called Sakura Nabe. (Called Sakura since the color of the meat looks like cherry blossom)
I'm Japanese from ARTch. I would like to write a brief commentary to add to what Fresh-Niki felt in this episode. For the Japanese, a meal includes the meaning of giving thanks and making offerings to the life that has become the foodstuff. The words "Itadakimasu" and "Gotchisousama" allow us to give thanks and make offerings at the same time. I know it is difficult for you to understand the feeling, but if you keep this in mind when enjoying a Japanese work, you will enjoy the work more.
@@Nickel_The_Wise we'll it's that the whole floor is about crossing water, wether you go top or swim through the submerged city is up to the adventurers. I was making a joke. It's not actually a reference.
@@pvzgamer9517 oh thank god, I thought I was losing my touch, I should've been ALL OVER something like that if they snuck it in, I only watched the episode three times~
Amazing reaction as always mr anime!! Also the episode was pretty great but a lot of mangas lore explaining felt left out, makes sense that that stuff has to be squished tho as fights have to be animated properly but eh
Maaaaan the episode felt like a downgrade now that we are shown the kraken part. Do yourself a favour and check out Dungeon Meshi CM when they promote the manga with a short animation for this specific chapter. The kraken scene was much more detailed 😢 Edit: dont worry about any spoilers because without context you wouldn't understand the scene showed in the CM anyways.
