Prices of Porsche models, particularly 911 997 Gen 2 have been rapidly increasing over recent months. Find out exactly what has been going on why I think this is happening. Plus I share my insights into where I think prices are heading for the rest of the year.
Welcome to Diary of a Porsche Specialist! This is the twenty-second episode in a regular series of VLOG diaries of running a Porsche Specialist car dealership in the UK by me, Raj, owner of M R Sportscars Porsche Specialist in Hertfordshire.

Hi Raj, thx a lot for the video! I know it's old but just saw it now. I know there are no precise data about this, but how high would YOU evaluate the percentage of manuals on this model? Around 15%? I have the impression, moreover, that there are more used manuals for sale in UK and US than over here in Europe. Looks like, over here, most people jumped on the pdk (although it was not yet perfect on this generation). What's your view? Here in Europe, I run across maybe one in 20 manuals in used cars for the 997.2. Maybe more than that were produced but they have already become collector's trailer queens? I surely hope not.

No problem! I would say around 10-15% depending on model. Also the advertised cars are not a fair reflection of this, as you say I also believe that more manuals are not changing hands because people either sell them off market to friends or hold onto them longer! In the UK you can actually look at the figures based on DVLA data, a website www.howmanyleft.co.uk/ Porsche UK handily classified all PDK as S-A in the model name, manuals just had the model you would recognise, '911 Carrera 4S' versus '911 Carrera 4S S-A' Some may have been categorised wrong but in general you can use this to get a relatively accurate split by year for each when looking up new registrations. Hope this helps! Raj

Hi Raj what’s your view on 997 2008 turbo as a potential future classic

I think they are, Mezger turbos are great, reliable etc. Cheers. Raj

Great account on current state of used Porsche market, Raj. Additionally I believe there's another factor involved here and yes it's the pandemic! Those fortunate enough to have kept their jobs suddenly have a lot more disposable income given uncertainties around expensive foreign holidays. At least that's how I got my 997.2 S for a good price back in early April.

Interesting video Raj….Also I guess due to being stuck at home during lockdown, there must be more people with surplus cash looking to buy into the brand which may have been not so financially possible pre-COVID!

Most informative video Raj, I agree having seen values creeping up this year . These cars are very sought after as I note most dealers are selling ( in particular 997 .2 cars) within a few days. These are Such amazing cars that now make a sound investment with the enjoyment factor attached. I am so pleased to have purchased my 997.2 4s from you back in February of this year. Keep doing what you do best Raj and keep the videos coming.

Hi Martin, I have witnessed a real increase in all Porsche models, but yes the 911 Turbo 996 series are significantly up from the lows of last year! Cheers, Raj

It's great to see, but I assume once the chip shortages and covid blows over, the prices will start to go slightly down but not to the same levels as pre covid. Yes these cars are becoming classics, but across the board... there's more demand for the second hand market at the moment hence the higher prices I think

great video Raj. i think that the fact that 997.2 sales when new were limited by global recession is a major factor too. there were not huge numbers of cars in the first place and the supply obviously cannot increase. add in the high level of demand and price rises are inevitable. i bought a 991.1 targa 4S last october and buying that car again today would be several thousand pounds dearer IF i could find one. my p ex was a 2018 718 cayman GTS and they have gone nuts over the same period due to new car supply issues. mind you the 4 pot engine is criminally underrated in my view even though no regrets here on picking up the last NA engined model.

@@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE i agree the flat 6 sound is addictive as i have had 7 NA flat 6 porsches. i just think having done 20k miles in a 4 pot turbo 718 cayman gts it is a very under appreciated engine.

Hello Raj, really love your Videos. Am the owner of a mint 2010 997.2 4S in Meteor Grey with manual gearbox and am never going to sell it. The 997.2 is a nimble little 911 and everything a Porsche was ever meant to be. The new space ship shaped cars might be better but they are simply too big. I bought my car with 6000 km on the clock and paid it € 110.000 euro - and this for one reason only. You never buy too high you just buy too soon ! On that remark - Porsche is spelled PORSCHE and not Porsh as you say ... gods speed . Best Jeppe
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE 3 года назад
Thanks Jeppe, you have a stunning example I think! Manual box cars are coveted by their owners. I really only sell PDK as a result, whenever I have stocked manuals, they take a long time to sell, from my experience, maybe now it would be different. Cheers, Raj

Great video. I also think that people are buying cars such as 996/997s to keep as the future is electric for the daily drive.

Solid information Raj and great news for sellers. I think all dealers are struggling with sourcing good cars and buyers are challenged with paying the asking prices. One concern is the insurance coverage for actual market price, time for GAP insurance?
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE 3 года назад
Thanks Kevin, yes potentially an issue in market values not reflecting in insurance values. Always best to have an agreed value policy on cars like these, from a specialist insurer. Thanks, Raj

Great video. Informative as ever. I'm still looking for a late gen 2 or 981 Cayman and have noticed the increases over three months or so. Waiting for you to get a grey or aqua blue one in (please)! Cheers, Stuart.

Very true Raj having to book to view cars at a dealership is an alien concept, we have got used to browsing when we want. Every time I booked to view a Porsche it sold before I got there! Had to go private in the end, very happy with my choice now :)

Great update, Raj. Agree - unprecedented and similar to current housing market - all as a result of the unprecedented situation in the UK post lockdown in my humble opinion. I’m just wondering what will happen when things settle down again. 12-18months time? And when normal production returns. Will it plateau, continue to rise or even go down and level to similar 2019/20 prices? I’ve seen some 997.1 targas especially tiptronics still struggling to sell?
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE
@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE 3 года назад
Thanks Chris for your insights and comparison to property as well. I am wondering as well what the longer term outlook will look like. I think it may plateau for any non borescore risk Porsche, so Mezger engined cars and all Porsche 997.2 and beyond. However I do think that carrera 911 2016 onwards may struggle as well, many have needed new turbos under warranty and this is another expensive timebomb like scoring. The sweet spot appears to be 2009 to 2015 for me. Cheers, Raj

@@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE interesting comments on 991.2 cars but i was already thinking my 2014 991.1 targa 4s was a "keeper"

Decent analysis of the market right now, been looking for a 997.2 manual coupe for a while and missed a few by a whisker, the search goes on, but at prices £6-8 k higher
