Here's how I replaced the front wheel bearings on my '74 914. If your wheels are making noise or they have play in them, new bearings may be in your future.
Please remember that I'm not a professional mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Just RU-vid ;). If you're unsure about taking on this procedure, please leave it to a pro. Use this information at your own risk. As always, be safe and enjoy!

I'm about to do this for my 914, thanks for the perfect step-by-step guide. You earned a subscribe! Edit: Well, it's done. I never thought it would be so greasy and so many gloves! I got worried on the rear bearing, there's a huge gap between it and the seal but you show the same gap in yours so I figured it was intentional, to seat up against the shoulder on the spindle. Thanks again.

Ian, First of all, I want to thank you for all the great videos you've put out on the 914. I had to stop this video around minute 15:30 because I felt that there is a better/correct/old school way to pack bearings, not the swooshing and lathering method I was seeing. I wanted to maintain your solid efforts and I felt I owed you, since you've helped me with some of you other videos to tackle stuff I wasn't clear on. So once you applied the grease in your palm, the next thing to do is hold the bearing with the widest part of the bearing pointed down toward the grease in your hand, and apply a downward and pressing motion to your palm, and finally dragging the bottom of the bearing back on your palm a 1/2 inch or so, do that 3,4,5 times in the same position, then rotate the bearing 10-15 degrees, and repeat the prior steps. You do that continuously until the grease overflows to the top of the bearing. This way insures that the bearing is completely packed, and all bearing surfaces are encapsulated with the grease. That bearing slopping procedure will only appear to have grease everywhere, but will fall short with air pockets and unlubricated areas causing early bearing fatigue. I'm sharing this cause it's a point my auto shop teacher made to me 50 years ago. While it takes longer to pack the bearing, its the correct way! I made it a point to not forget that lesson. Just sharing. Now I'm going to continue watching because I believe you do a great job helping us 914 owners get'er done!

Great video, Ian! Very helpful. I used your trick of cutting a notch in the old races to use as a tool to press in the new races. I used a small block of wood to pound them in so it had even pressure on all sides. Thanks again!

Ian, put the race in the freezer and with just a little heat on the rotor, you can drop ‘me right in

I believe the dust covers are backwards here. It is weird, but you actually want that inch gap between the cover and the back of the arm. The caliper slips in between.

Thanks. As I recall, the calipers won't fit if the covers are on backwards. I may have put them on backwards originally while filming and then fixed it later. ;)

If I'm going to install new rotors and bearings then all one needs to do is buy the 2 rotors and 4 wheel bearings, install the races into the new rotors and remove the old parts and replace them with the new?

Yep. If you're putting new rotors and bearings in, the only "old parts" you're keeping are the large washer which retains the outer bearing, the special nut with locking hex, and the dust cap. Unless you buy new. Good luck and be safe...
