Porsche 914 Targa Seals- Full 914 Rubber Kit Install- No More Leaks! 

I would not use WD-40 as a lubricant because it is oil-based and will degrade the rubber. It is best to use silicon grease which you can buy from Grainger Supply. Second best is simply to use common dishwashing liquid soap, like Dawn. When installing upper side window seals on the targa top, I slipped one edge under the metal lip, and then pushed the other edge into the other lip using a plastic trim tool, instead of trying to slide it it in from one end toward the other. On the main targa seal, the side seals have to be installed first. Use lots of silicon grease on the seals so they will slide down the metal seal holders. Push them fairly evenly on the driver and passenger sides, NOT one side first. Be sure to remove the dimples punched into the edges of the side seal holders by the factory, or you won't be able to slide the new seal down into the holders.

Video was fine. mikedx’s comments are also helpful. Most jobs need to be attempted as you can’t learn just by videos. Gonkmeat, You could also do the same job and create a better how-to video for us. I’d watch it but I’m already much better prepared just from what is here.

That was really interesting Jax. It is very easy to criticize but that usually comes from people who don't make videos and certainly don't share their knowledge with others (if they have anything worth sharing, that is).

This is minor I suppose, but I’m looking for recommendations on the best way to trim the excess from those really beefy seals after you install them. Thoughts?

The 914 is at heart a convertible, so it will never be water tight. These cars had "coach built" bodies hand made/assembled by Karmann, so no two cars were ever exactly alike, even though they made thousands of them. All you can ever do is slow down the rate of water entry into the interior. You will still need to carry a towel with you when it rains!

Thank you for showing how to do this. I have a 72 as well and need to resolve all the seals. I will be repainting before I do. Where are y’all located?

How about soft soap that's what most use?

If one is looking for a how to video; keep looking. Hardly any instructional value. Just shots of you guys working without any good "how to tips". So basically just a waste of 10 minutes.
