It's not every day someone offers you the keys to their trusted Porsche, fortunately for me my friend George is a proud owner of a Grand Prix White Porsche 944. And recently he was kind enough, or perhaps stupid enough, (whichever way you wish to interpret it) to give me the keys to his lovely 1986 example.
The Porsche 944 was the successor to the 924, a car which failed to win the hearts of the automotive world and a vehicle which many accuse of utilising a feeble a van engine from VW.
The 944 was Porsche's entry level sports car designed for everyday use and it has since been hailed as one of the best handling sports cars ever built.
In this video I explore what the 944 is like to drive on a daily basis, discuss its flaws, drivability and comments on its overall personality.

I had a lot of fun making this video and I hope that comes across in the edit. So, if you enjoyed the review it would be great if you could give it a cheeky thumbs up and make sure to subscribe. As always, several more cars in the diary to test, meaning lots more content coming very soon - watch this space!
Thanks for watching guys

Every time a car is even a single cent less then the 911 it's a poor man car by that standard a 911 is a Poor man's 918. It is still a Porsche it doesn't matter about the price at least it isn't a civic

I have one, in white. Most of your comments are spot on. People do look and the reception I get from people is positive. Younger people have little idea as to what it is. They see the Porsche script on the back and they look puzzled. One guy said to me ‘what did that cost you ? £80,000? Nah mate a 10th of that. It’s fun, different, quick enough and there are loads of spares available. I’m doing some winter work on it for the spring. Looking forward to bringing ‘Porky’ 🙄 out of storage !! Love the channel
@Vore667

It's better than 911. Engine in the back is a bad idea. Engine in front, gearbox in the back however is a terrific idea, that's why fastest and best cars use it. If only 200 944's were made, everybody would drool and people would pay millions for them. But since it sold well, it's a poor man's car even if it completely killed contemporary 911 turbo S (for 2 seconds!) on willow springs raceway. Both cars were driven by Derek Bell. After the testing he said: ''after driving the turboS the 911 felt like it had a flat tire''

Nice video, you're spot on! I bought a 1991 S2 a year ago when I was 24. Those cars are really reliable and as you said everything works even after more than 2 decades. I truly recommend those front engine Porsche as first sport cars, they do not cost you too much, they're still quite powerful, very easy to use, confortable (the Targa roof is a must) and their design is timeless - outside as well as inside. No surprise their prices are increasing considering how old Porsches are sought after those days. Still time to get one with low mileage, full history for a fair price though.

This vehicle is destroyed underneath, the brakes dont work, the ac doesnt work, it guzzles fuel at an abnormally fast rate. I have an 87 924s and so it is essentially a 944 in a 924 body and my brakes (944 brakes) are outstanding and my aircon works well. Also i can get 29 miles to the gallon in town
@exgop7597
@exgop7597 5 лет назад
I agree100 % . I think my millage on my 87 944 is excellent. I get 30 or more to the U.S. gallon in town in my 80 924. Love them both. I can remember seeing a 924 for the first time but I don't remember seeing a 911 for the first time. Must be a reason. Every where I go heads are turned and comments are made. Except by 911 owners. Must be reason. My reason. Not for the attention but for the most fun I have had ever had driving and at 6ft. tall most comfortable.

I don't believe he ever said this was a totally sorted out perfect car. For what it is with lasting beauty and its age and the owners possibly limited budget its still a great running machine built to last when maintained which won't empty the bank account a lot if you learn/service it mostly yourself. It can be tedious but its not rocket science and it can be rewarding to own.

People seem to forget that the 944 platform was tested at the crucible of Lemans after it's mundane beginnings. A properly tuned 944 is a track weapon. Think about this, out of a gigantic field of cars the 924 GTS race cars finished 12th overall at Lemans, not in their class, but overall against GT1, GT2, GT3, LMP, Prototypes! Astonishing. The 944 platform is criminally underated and that's now changing with their value beginning to rocket for well kept examples. About time! Respect!

You have no clue,(as the driver in this video, sorry but) these engines don't use any fuel at all. They were built to be maximum efficient, an economic daily drive. My 944 has a 2.5 liter (163hp without the turbo) that uses only 7-11 litres pr.100km, that's almost not more than a Golf.. Stop laughing and google it.

Firstly, the first porsche I ever bought was a well used 1984 911. I really didn't like it at all. I just didn't trust it on the wet English roads and even though I did all my own maintenance it was expensive. I bought my first 944 in 1998, it was an 88 model. I still have it and it is not very different to the day I bought it. Currently I have 7 cars and 2 are 944's I've uprated the exhaust and had the engine tune, put adjustable shocks and better brakes on both. I love them. As for fuel consumption, they are way way better than my much newer Toyota GT4 (ST205). On top of that, they are worth 4 times what I paid for them and with classic car insurance pretty cheap to run.

I can't imagine enjoying a 944. Superb design they coulda/shoulda kept improving and making. If you're looking for a poor man's Porsche, buy a Volkswagen. RU-vid Donught Media did an entertaining video: 1963 911 made 130 HP. 1966 911S made a whopping 160 HP. Which is about what the 944 made at 163 HP. Tenth Anniversary 911 Carrera RS reached 210 HP. Which is between the 2.5 Boxster at 207, and not quite up to my 2.7 Boxster at 217 HP. Folks, the Porsches come into their own on twisty roads. If you want a straight line go fast car get a muscle car. And if you don't live near some twisty roads or go to the track, get a Corvette or a Mustang, or something else. I don't know...do POOR MEN buy Porsches? I never met a poor man in a Porsche. The truly rich men I've known drove Lexus/Toyota, Mercedes, or GM or Ford. I believe most Porsche owners are car enthusiasts, with a smaller percentage just looking for prestige.

I would comment that brake technology has not come a long way. The brakes on this are no different to 99% of any new car (apart from abs). Modern cars are "over servoed" when compared to an older car.

I've had five 944s from between 1995 to 2015. They are extremely hard wearing and reliable. My first had over 400,000 miles on the clock and was easily passing MOT emission tests up until 2005 when a drunk driver ploughed into it with his shitty Mondeo. Fuel consumption is very respectable. Maintenance is pretty simple given it's a Porsche - anyone not afraid to get their hands dirty can easily carry out drive shaft / wheel bearing / brake replacement / repair tasks. There is a thriving spare parts industry with lots of reasonably priced QUALITY pattern parts available. Corrosion is rarely an issue - the bodies were zinc-dipped prior to assembly. Their shape is timeless and elegant. The only bug is the tendency for all models to suffer cracked dashboards (there's a guy in the USA who makes a very good quality padded cover for the entire dash to order) - essentially reupholstering it. Also if you find the rear floor carpets are damp it's usually the drain pipes just behind the sun roof have hardened and detached - an easy fix. Handling is perfect due to the fifty/fifty balance between the weight of the engine and the rear transmission. This is one car that I hope Porsche bring back without messing with - unlike the Mini, Fiat 500, VW Beetle from other manufacturers (although Porsche is part of the VW/Audi partnership). A better quality dash is all they need to change.

I'm amazed the owner put what soulds like an S2 engine and didn't upgrade the brakes, steering and suspension. I've got a 944 S2 cabriolet with updated brakes and steering and adjustable gas shocks with staggered alloys. It goes and handles and stops as well as any modern car.

I think this car is classic after all, it has very unique exterior design and that open/close head lamp, it really tells a lots about the 1980s eras, but also the design is still look juicy up to this day. 911 looks good, yes. But it look too similar to boxster, so it is too common in style. I wish they remake 944, but i am not sure the open/close head light are allowed on new cars in USA

Some of the 944s did come with the silver center caps over black Fuchs or cookie cutters, though I agree they'd look better in black.

As a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo (951) owner I love to pronounce it Porch, the purists LOVE it! You can see the disgust rising like bile in their facial expressions, rofl. It's especially fun to listen to them correct me and than answer in German ( I speak a little German) Great fun!!

Nothing special??? When maintained properly and not beat, this is one very solid sport coupe built in many ways robust besides having a galvanized body very resistant to rust. My '85 solid feels solid like a tank. Why not keep these great cars going. The foundation of these cars built to last. Period.

Might also add it has a lasting appeal look even 35+ years later that always gets attention. Mine in dark gun metal grey blends almost perfectly with all rubber and clear coated definitely gets looks. Timeless beauty, very low slung, useful storage, near perfect handling, racing heritage pedigree. Very special to us who like/love them.

One last thing people notice. Those phone dial wheels. Besides looking cool take notice of one near you moving (which doesn't happen often lol). The wheels will appear to not be spinning even though car is moving. Very cool effect.
