Porsche 944 why to buy now

Back in the day the target audience for Porsche was limited to millionaires yet by the 1980’s expanding the fan base to the less affluent became an urgent project if Porsche's success was to continue.
And so for the first time in its history the German car maker capitulated by collaborating with another car brand and in doing so gained a platform on which to build their fledgling affordable sports car.
Many years later these sporty two plus two’s are an affordable classic Porsche for those limited by budget, with the classic car purists often overlooking and neglecting this fine piece of Stuttgart engineering.
But not me because 30 years ago I had my own Porsche 944 and I knew how good it was back then, so to find out what it's like to reacquaint with a special old friend, join me Roger Bailey in what for me was one of the 1980’s greatest hits…
Thank you for watching 😊
If you have a cool car and would like it filming please feel free to get in touch.

One of the better 944 videos, thank you, but 25 seconds in, first inaccuracy, the 944 was not Porsche's first collaboration, the 914 was far earlier, and the 924 was designed by Porsche for VW, even using an Audi based engine. Other points, Clutches last 100K to 130K miles, trip reset is a myth, one gear in the train is made out of a plastic that doesn't age well and crumples, being reset or not it will fail.....standard DME relays do not "fail regularly" a little more than most, but it is 2 relays in one body. - 7 x 944 owner over 15 years, currently have 3

What are the biggest things one should look for when buying a 944? Things that separate the car from a decent condition to a lemon.
@A9XXC
@A9XXC Год назад
@@KurruptedDataYouT Issue is when the basics are wrong or initial opinion's are flawed, it is verry difficult to take the rest of it seriously....... I hear a lot of people say that the standard 944 naturally aspirated model is not "fast", but I've found that mine had excellent pickup mixed with smooth handling. Of all the cars I've owned, my 944 is definitely my favorite to drive. Judging by the current prices I'm seeing, a lot of people are finally taking interest in the 944.

My first car in 88 was a 78 924 and I have never felt another car yet that feels so good! 944's are hitting 8k and up over here. I will get an early model to invest in and polish $$ out of it, and I hope to find 87+ S or even better S2. 15k US should land me a fine example. Thanks for your work. I recently took possession of my late father-in-laws pristine 1983 944 with 5spd and no power steering. It had no service records, except for oil changes and fluid changes. I took it to an independent Porsche shop that serviced all the major components and engine seals, replaced alternator and more. It is very fun to drive. I get lots of thumbs ups and comments about the car. Recently I drove into Hollywood and I had a woman next to me taking pictures and waving. Maybe I looked like a movie star?

Great video! I couldn't help be amused as you were describing the 944, especially with regards to maintenance and cost, it almost sounded like you were describing the VW Scirocco 16V except that it's not that expensive to maintain. LOL. But like the 944, parts are getting harder to find and both cars suffer from the same maladies like cracking dashes. It's also a bit amusing that back in the day, the Scirocco was a scant faster than the 944. Mahalo for such a lovely and eloquent video!

I have 3 Porsches, a 911sc, a 993tt and a 944 turbo S. The 993 is a great car but you can't get out of second gear in Australia. The 911 is fun but you can't beat the old school turbo lag and then jettison from a 250hp 944. It is my favourite to drive to work or on long trips, hey the air con works. Great cars and significantly undervalued compared to a 308 or 328 Ferrari which can't even keep up and you always have a piece of them in your back seat. If you get the chance for a turbo S (based on the cup racing cars don't hesitate). Cheers Lee

As a 944 owner I agree with everything he said. The 944 has all the good points of a modern car with none of the real drawbacks. You don't have to set the ignition timing or mess around with a carburetor because all of that is computer controlled, but it's not so complicated that you can't work on it yourself. It's easy to live with, economical for a porsche, has great, old school German build quality and is fun to drive. The car is very balanced and the engine comes alive around 5k rpm. Handling is good, very forgiving and predictable, but the 944 is definitely not for people who want a fast car. Clunky and wooly shifting due to the transmission being all the way in the back is my least favorite thing about driver controls. Mechanically, the timing belt/water pump is the only real achilles heel of the car, like he mentions. Porsche did some revisions but never really seemed to nail it down. For people who set it properly and do maintenance it doesn't seem to be a big deal though. Guards Red with black leather are my favorite color options, but white on white is a great 80's color combo. You can tell whoever owns this car took great care of it.

I am an extremely happy owner (going on two decades, now) of a ‘90 S2 Cabriolet. Cost to operate? Negligible….as long as an astute owner keeps up with the recommended maintenance schedule. That can bite…..if you don’t turn your own wrench. Buy the absolute best example that you can find….from an owner who understands keeping up with the maintenances! When I bought mine, I passed on three, before settling on mine. Always, always, ALWAYS get a PPI (pre-purchase inspection), and don’t assume that a modern Porsche dealership can do an adequate PPI on these older Porsches….they cannot. And for that PPI, expect to pay $200-$300 (American dollars) each. I enjoyed this video this morning…..I think I’ll take a autumn drive up the Maine coast and back through the White Mountains of New Hampshire…..as I’ll be putting mine into winter storage soon. Again, great video, great information, beautiful scenery!

Ah Roger, how the memories came flooding back! I swapped a 1982 Fiat X1/9 for a 1986 944 Lux back in 1990 (not quite a straight swap...) and what a revelation. Don't get me wrong, the little Fiat was a hoot to drive, not fast by any means (85bhp..) but fun on a twisty road and you could stow the roof under the front lid on a sunny day. Stepping out of the slowly bio-degrading Italian into the (recently updated) 944 cabin was a revelation The feeling of well-screwed-together solidity was a world away from the X1/9. The driving experience was also in another league and at first the 944 felt like a rocket-ship. However, the 'need for speed' crept up on me and I swapped it a couple of years later for a 944 S2: 211 versus 163bhp made quite a difference. I also liked the slightly neater front-end treatment of the S2 compared to the earlier cars. Fast-forward via a 928S4, 928GTS, 964 C4 and a couple of Boxsters later and we arrive at the current car that my wife hates...a 1996 993 C2 in my favourite colour, Iris blue. Well, she likes her Skoda, bless her. It's lovely to see videos featuring some of the older Porsche models, the current crop all seem to have grown bigger in every direction! Keep up the good work and cheers from a rather chilly Otford, Kent.

as much love and esteem as people have for the E30 M3...me knowing i could never afford one or be willing to own/drive one with heavy use....the 944 to me is a more realistic car to own/drive. Definitely been on my radar...and modern cars have progressed to this current status/point....i am aware/fearful of the 944's being bought up in the coming years due to a general need/lack of modern options for this level/range of intuitive/driving experience enjoyment power aside. With added emphasis on level of fun/enjoyment at lower speeds being a huge point of emphasis that MANY newer cars genuinely lack.

He offered me a test drive and I came back the next day and bought it. The first impression of the 944 was superseded by the 924S, packed with all the 944 bits and pieces from the parts bins. Let me guess you are from the US. Stop putting V8's in things, just get the turbo S and add some tuning kit and it will out perform the V8. Lindsay racing in US has kits to boost from 300hp up to 500hp, as they used to be in racing spec, for the Porsche cup in UK and France back in late 80's.

Hello! I’m looking for parts for the engine of my Porsche 944. I am looking for parts that can be compatible to Porsche. I’m not really a car guy, so I need your help. This was given to me in 2014 and I wanted to restore it.

Overlooked? I've heard 20 times more about this car the last 5 years than any similarly aged porsche, people won't shut up about how great a deal they are, like fine, we get it, you go buy them, jeezzz.

"..everything is available from an OPC often at prices that beat independent suppliers...". Well, that's a joke - many many 944 parts are NLA (no longer available), such as the rubber sleeve that fits over the rear set pin. If yours goes, your rear seats rattle. Independents won't charge you the fortune OPC will to fix/service your 944. Another NLA (I could list dozens): Fuel pressure regulators - Bosch don't make them anymore and you'll be lucky to get one for less than £300 plus VAT, same as fuel dampers and good luck getting new front struts: the last time they were available, they were £550+ for one and £350+ for the other. You have to fit a threaded sleeve on old one's, fit a new spring, shock absorber and get them painted/powder coated. He never mentioned trim. Carpets, seats, upholstery are NLA and you will not get moulded carpet sets and you will pay a fortune for re-upholstering by the likes of Southbound. Do not break or want to replace the rear hatch glass - you'll be staring down the barrel of over £5k for new. I know all this because I have been restoring one for the past few years. It was cheaper for me to buy a donor 944 than source a lot of the parts I needed, which is what I did. Have a look in the used 944 ads for sale - some with receipts exceeding £20k and selling for half that. That ^ white one is exceptional and rare because of it. Many are ropey. Buy one but go over it with a fine toothcomb because they are not really going up like other classic cars because bits are difficult to source and expensive (if they are available) which is and has been for the past 10 years, dampening the value of the 944. Best be a DIYer if you want one, especially if you intend to get OPC servicing and repair. The simplest, little job will cost you £200+ph plus VAT as opposed to indie prices a fraction of that. www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?p=1592683

These cars are maintenance prone and expensive to fix. Not fast either. The best way to keep it running is not to drive it.

Wouldn’t the insurance be relatively cheap if it isn’t that fast? I’m a big fan of these vintage cars but I don’t want the headache of expensive insurance and it always breaking. Any suggestions for cars like these? Is a Toyota Mk Mr2 good for example?

Porsches were for millionaires before the 80s? You sure about that?

*Why can't people be honest about old cars?* "it's no longer a fast car." It's a slow car. "It's a car that connects the driver directly to the control interface." So does my lawn mower. "for me, it replays a glorious analogue, one of the 1980s greatest hits" I am trying to relive my youth like every other 60 year old.

Don't do it. The car is a borderline antique. Parts are expensive and the knowledge base is dying off. The only people who should be buying 944's are collectors with money and race shops with fabrication skills.

@@SAMMYJR00777 actually, if not LS swap why not throw a k20 or k24 engine in it. Perfect spacing for that engine. Lots of space to tuck an intercooler. Decent space for a turbo kit or supercharger. After that a clean set of rims and coils. There you go a fun track car that no one would expect to pull up on em. Lol
