In this video, Nathan Merz dives deep into the Porsche 993, the last air-cooled 911, which was available in North America for the 1995-1998 model years. If you're in the market for a 993, or just eager to learn all you can about them, this video is a must watch. Be warned, though; when we say deep dive, we mean it. Give yourself two hours to watch it from start to finish.
5:09 - Mechanical Changes from 964 to 993
5:28 - Engine and Gearbox
6:30 - Gearbox
9:29 - Variants
14:04 - Narrow body vs wide body / C2S vs C4S
17:42 - Carrera 4S primer
19:12 - Carrera 2S primer
19:51 - "Which year is best"
20:27 - 1995 model year USA differences
26:00 - Exterior walkaround
37:11 - Interior walkaround
49:35 - Paint colors
55:58 - Paint metering
57:39 - Engine compartment, oil level, etc.
1:03:06 - Rest of World engine / VarioRam engine
1:06:44 - Frunk
1:14:30 - Accessories (what would come in the frunk)
1:17:05 - Underneath the car
1:35:52 - Source material and documentation
1:46:14 - 993 Carrera modifications
Additionally, if you have any questions about this or any of Nathan's other model guide videos, be sure to tune into Tech Tactics Live on December 6 at 8 PM ET, when Nathan will be on hand to answer them personally.

RWD vs. AWD - the AWD cars had LSD (limited slip), 4 channel ABS (as opposed to 3 channel), and ABD (traction control) all as standard. On RWD cars these were optional and not commonly optioned.

Great video but a few errors. The ride height measurement point you mentioned in the back was incorrect. Also the ‘spacer’ you are referring to for the rear spring/damper assembly is at the top. The plastic part you pointed to is just the lower spring locator.

@belg1an good catch, I make these videos as almost one takes so occasionally I do make errors and this is one. The ride height measurement point is actually the rear subframe mount point, if you pause the video at 1:37:30 one can see the factory schematic for that. Thanks for catching that for me!

Thank you so much for this great 993 presentation and, in particular, to also address the international market / audiences as well as the German options! Obviously, you are an absolute expert on this Baumuster 993. The full leather option is so beautiful as expensive, and a much-sought feature over here in Germany. The red full leather interior is perhaps unique, at least I never saw such an interior. Would be interesting how much P. exclusive charged.

Thanks. Really like your videos about the several generations of the 911. Just one "correction" In Europe, full leather and on-board computer was/is pretty common in the 993´s, even in the base Carrera, The C4S had standard full leather and on-board computer and 8 way seats. For some reason, in North America the 993´s (even the 964´s) cars had less equipment than in Europe. Dont know why. Regards from The Azores, Portugal.

This is the single best 993 'model guide' that I've ever seen in my life, so huge shout out to Nathan and the PCA for putting it together. Although I consider myself quite knowledgeable about these great cars, it's very easy to eat a large slice of humble pie after listening to a true expert on the matter, and Nathan is about as good as it gets. So, I heavily encourage people to take advantage of the knowledge that he's willing to share, just as I do! My favorite part of the video was Nathan showing us that he can modify cars too, as he is very right to point out that is a side of him that we don't often get to see. Thanks again for an outstanding video, and get out there and enjoy your Porsches!.

My favorite thing about this video is the consistent message about enjoying it, making it your own, deciding what works for you and customizing it to your delight. After having finished a two and a half year resto mod on my 97 targa, this video resonates deeply. I even have some kit that I didn't know came with the car, like the yellow gloves in the frunk. Well done and thank you!

Hi, new sub here, incredible video! I'm the excited new owner of a 1997 speed yellow VerioRam 993 basic coupe (with rear seat delete). My rubber boot tore (you mentioned at 50:01) wondering if my car will overheat that way, does it have to be urgently replaced? My driver mirror feels solid when the car is off but it wobbles vertically when driving, what causes that? Something's draining my battery, is there a typical place to find to cause this? I get fumes if I fill gas above 3/4 tank, is there a common place that leaks? Thank you

Another way to tell if a transmission has a limited slip differential is to look at the gearbox type code. One can see in the video the yellow car's gearbox is a type G5020 "2" the last number "2" indicates the presence of a limited slip differential (LSD) (option code M220). If that number is a "1" then a standard open differential is inside. If M224 Automatic Brake Differential (ABD) is ordered M220 was included. ABD requires 4 channel ABS brakes so each wheel has its own channel. Standard 993 brakes are 3 channel, the rear two wheels sharing a channel. Also a 993 parts manual is extremely informative and not mentioned as a resource.

Sure you can say that all 911's are special. But 964 and 993 are the pinnacle of Porsche brand, imho. Not just last hand built mechanical cars but LAST of the original 911. Everything after that is just rebranding. It's no longer the original 911, they just call it 911. I'm not saying the new ones are better or worse, they are just not the same car anymore. Cheers great video.

Wow, this is an impressive piece of work, really very comprehensive and knowledgeable. I am probably heavily biased, but I miss a short note within the interior section on the possible ventilation system weaknesses, mainly possible worn-out fan- and servo motors, as well as the 993-specific tendency of a failing evaporator. I know A/C is the most common option in the US, but it could mention that the 993 also was available without the A/C option.

Excellent video Nathan. Thank you. I was happy to hear your comments regarding the lighting on the 993. I owned a '95 Cabriolet with the standard halogen headlights. They were simply terrible. At the time we were participating in several night and all-night rallies in southern California every year and I couldn't safely use this car for those events. It was a real shame since I loved driving the 993.

He has a great collection for sure, but i’m still a turbo fan. I saw the europian license plate format with the Early911s subtitle. I already heard about them because they constantly advertising on Europe biggest used car market site and even a german car magazin made a video about them. One of their offer what they have listed is they taking a 993 turbo and they restore it and upgrading it to an S model. They also offering rare PTS color options. All that for 450k euro. Personally i find their prices way too high but automotive restoration prices are went to skyhigh here in Europe now.

Great vid. Nathan is amazing. Done many of those red car mods to mine. One thing - those were not 'comfort' seats in one car he pointed out. They were 'standard' seats. Comfort seats have three rows of stitching on the bottom instead of two...
@nathanmerz
@nathanmerz 10 месяцев назад
@fredreynolds1677 to be technically correct neither of these seats are "comfort" seats, as Porsche did not use that nomenclature on the 993, although that is the generally used term for them vs. the optional sport seats. The standard equipment is leather with the two rows of stitching, when you see 3 rows of stitching on the standard seat that is option code 982 "Draped Leather" which many people call "supple leather".

Excellent, as usual Nathan. A few things you might have included: 1- Weight differences in turbo twist hollow spokes and solid spoke wheels- unsprung, and pretty substantial. 2- Weight differences in FD's Fister II and III mufflers, besides sound. This is particularly true in the III's where weight savings are substantial. 3-Might have mentioned FD's Golden Rod as the factory shifting is less precise. 4- Many owners add ssk's, particularly FD's, Numeric, or Rothsport's as factory shifting has overly long throws. 5- Reference aluminum door sills, which one of your cars had- not sure they were factory or aftermarket? 6- Factory jack is dangerous, poorly designed, and the air compressor is very unreliable- include them only for resale..! The factory tool kit, even the better one of the 2, needs a few "extras". Spare belts! 7- Factory Litronics, even after 27-years, still throw very decent white light, far better than standard, although not as well as more recent aftermarkets- Tore, Morimoto. 8- The Blue Euro version you shared has adjustable front beams and rear fog lights in addition to the highly desirable re-gearing. 9- None of the cars, all WA titled, had front license plates even though required in WA. I agree, looks better without them; I use the tow hook attachment.
@nathanmerz
@nathanmerz 10 месяцев назад
@fredericauerbach2227 here are the weights and part numbers, you are correct that reducing unsprung weight is a significant benefit to handling. Hollow spoke "Technology" wheels listed on left vs. solid on right: 993.362.136.00 - ET52 - 19.95 lb (front) 8 x 18 - 993.362.136.01 - ET52 - 25.57 lb 993.362.140.01 - ET65 - 23.36 lb (narrow body rear) 10 x 18 - 993.362.140.04 - ET65 - 29.32 lb 993.362.140.00 - ET40 - 25.13 lb (wide body rear) 10 x 18 - 993.362.140.03 - ET40 - 31.08 lb I am a BIG fan of the FD Motorsports exhaust, yes the III is lighter than the stock muffler as he removes a significant amount on the inner baffling: fdmotorsports.net/shop/ols/products/fister-993-stage-iii-sport-exhaust-modification I mention the Golden Rod and SSK at 1:52:50, as of late I have fallen back into the original feel camp, but as I always emphasize make the car your own! Aluminum door sills are option code X70, you can check the option code tag on any given 993 to determine if original installed or not. I find the factory jack to be just what it is designed for, emergency use! I would never use it in my shop as a replacement for a proper, safer jack. The same goes for the air compressor and tool kit. Yes, spare belts as well as a DME relay are a must for the trunk of any driven 993! I find the 993 lighting to be one of the weakest areas and the primary issue is reflector design which the Litronic or the various aftermarket HID/bulb kits cannot change. There are some newer headlights which have completely new reflectors and I have not tested them as I can't get over the aesthetics personally, but they would be worth doing an actual lighting test on. Yes the Euro cars get headlight beam height adjustment and a rear foglight per German law. Front plate? NEVER in my world, some things are just worth the ticket!

Comming from a 996 C2 Coupe I wanted an air cooled 911. I originally thought the 993 was the best choice but bought a 1982 911 SC and I'm glad I did. For me, part of going to the air cooled generation is nostalgia. I grew up in the 80's admiring the G body 911 SC and 3.2 as they were of course new plus the movie No Man's Land made me want that generation even more. I love the 993 but to me it's getting closer to the water cooled cars.

In the US 95 was the only model with a single O2 sensor infront on the catalytic converter. (OBD1). The C2 version also had a higher ride height and softer springs. The solution was to get the OEM ROW MO30 springs and Koni height adjustable coil over struts (only produced in 1994 and 1995 as Porsche replace Boge as an OEM supplier and the new supplier would not supply Konis with the lower strut mounts. . Sport seats were not available until 1996 in the US. The 1996 on had varioram intake manifold. Sport exhaust with sport intake was available on 96 or later. High intensity head light (Litronic) also not available until 1996. The rear under engine cover was unpopular and easy to remove. The underside on the engine and transmission had ugly brown cosmoline sprayed on it from the factory as anti corrosion. Which made no sense an aluminum casing engine and transmission. Many owners had this dry ice spray removed it.

Nathan - I have nothing but respect and admiration for your knowledge and presentation in all the PCA videos. I absolutely love my ‘97 993, but I have just experienced the dreaded “OBD II Check Engine Light” malady. I live in California. I opted for the ‘97 thinking the end of the production line would be best, but I noted your comment regarding how you would purchase only a pre ‘96 if you were in California. What do you suggest as the best course to solve the problem and pass California Smog? Thanks for any ideas.

A lot of details that would be useful for owners like suspension set up factoring the fact car is a Cabrio with subtly impacted stiffness vs Coupe and the electric motors etc. The Bentley Manual is also quite comprehensive and every owner will do well to have one in their bookshelf 😊. Once again thanks 🙏🏿

I have a question in regards to service history. I have a 2005 carrera I bought 3 yrs ago and I am trying to gather the last bit of service history from a Porsche dealer in Washington. They say they don’t have it in the system anymore because the dealer has change ownership. Keep in my I am giving my vin and when it was serviced based on my car fax report. It’s unfortunate because it’s the last bit of service history I need . The other two Porsche dealers where it was serviced gave it to me with no problems.. do you think the dealer is not being honest or can the change of ownership delete the history. It was serviced there from 2011/2013.. thx

I’ve owned my 993 turbo for 19 years now. I always observed the front wings were different to narrow body, that front bumper design plays tricks on the eye. 😮I’m still learning so much.

What a brilliant and informative video. In 1998 I bought a 1996 993 Targa vario ram and I have to say it was the best car that I have ever owned. I was living in South Africa at that time and I believe there were only 4 in the country at that time.

Another fantastic video Nathan. Thank you. Very educational for me as a recent purchaser of a 993. In this video, you mention the risk of rust bubbles under the front and rear window seals and how to check for those, though you do not mention the somewhat common door check strap failure issue arising from improper design and how to check for it. I find your video from 2022 on the door check strap failure and how it should be repaired to also be excellent. I mention this here for those who might want the cross reference to that video since the door check strap failure is an important, even if unfortunate, characteristic of 993s.

@johnathandunn9889 Yes, the check strap is a potential weak spot on the 993 and thank you for pointing out my video which can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MeKJQclfEVw.html

The bumper cover design of the wide bodies reminds me of the 917. Pretty similar styling.

One thing to point out AFA AWD is that the 964 AWD is really squirrely at the margin. The 993 is much better behaved.
@nathanmerz
@nathanmerz 10 месяцев назад
@victorgold4172 the AWD systems between the 964 and 993 are radically different! The 993 AWD system is a strictly mechanical system that uses a viscous coupling (VC) and effectively operates as a RWD until rear wheel slip is detected. As a result a 993 C4 will behave much more similar to a standard Carrera at the limit in the dry, in the wet/snow it will feel markedly different. The 964 system is electronic and computer controlled and always has a 33/67 default torque split with electronic control for changing those parameters as needed. As a result they do feel markedly different vs. the Carrera. For me IF I was going to have an all wheel drive air-cooled car, I would only want a 964 version as I find that system much better suited for its given task of a 911 for all seasons. Not everyone will agree with me however!
@victorgold4172
@victorgold4172 10 месяцев назад
Hi Nathan, Yes, thanks, I was aware that they were very different. Having had both 89 and 90 964 AWDs, I found that both behaved in the same, and in my opinion, very unsatisfactory way. And, I might add, completely unlike any other AWD car I have driven. With both cars, when you really push it around a turn, the drive train would do this very strange behavior that felt like the front drive was decoupling from the back, so that all of a sudden the car felt very loose. The dealers claimed the cars worked properly. My 993 AWD behaves the way it should. I have driven Volvo V70Rs in the past, and recently picked up another, and as usual, it feels like it could easily blow the doors off most Porsches. It also has AWD. And the Subies that others in our family have or have had, while not fast, also behave predictably at margin. I think the 964 design is dangerous. But that's just my opinion. BTW, I think your videos are great! Victor
