I’d let you work on my Boxster S One point my late master mechanic Ssd always said to me “ fill your oil filter housing with oil before fitting “ I’ve changed a heater matrix and a door regulator which weren’t the easiest , best advice, take out and replace the same day as easy to forget something about the work . Fabulous cars on twisty Scottish roads 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Well done ( very thorough and informative)

Hoping you’re not under the car with floor jack only for support. Couldn’t tell if a back up was in place, e.g., jack stand or blocks. Not trying to be condescending, just know of people who’ve been crushed by using floor jack only. Just gave me the creeps watching what looked like just a floor jack for support. Apologies if you had additional support that was out of frame. That said, particularly liked your demonstration of Durametric usage. Thank you.

Oh yes, I had additional supports that included jack stands and a big wooden beam spanning the width of the car. Thought about including that in the video. I’ll put this info in the description since it’s extremely important. Thanks for watching!

Hey this might be a stupid question, but I'm about. todo my first oil change on my Boxster, and I know you said rightie tighty lefty loosie, but from a lot of the videos I've seen the drain plug and filter housing look reverse threaded, just to make sure, do you turn the plug and housing counter-clockwise or clockwise to loosen? Thanks!
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq 8 месяцев назад
Not at all, I’m happy to try to answer your question. I’m not familiar with the drain plug and filter housing being a reverse thread. I can just say that the right to tighten and left to loosen worked for me. Good luck with the oil change!

Holding your breath as you check for metal shards in the oil filter pleats is one of the many joys of owning a 986 😟

Orient Red is fairly unique. A limited time option.

Excellent video , other than reminding about proper support for safety , I would add safety goggles are a good idea .

i just bought a 1998 it had a cel for misfires i cleared the codes with a cheap odb2 and after driving it for a while it never came on again iam still very scared of a ims failure would you say better safe the sorry and buy a durametric or just run with it ?
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq 7 месяцев назад
While the durametric is helpful it has limitations. The safest thing to do is replace the IMS bearing. I have this on my list of things to do in the spring. I am going to attempt to replace it myself and will post a video of how to do it…fingers crossed 🤞

Great video, thanks! I usually use a bubble level to make sure the car is horizontal. I noticed that the oil level indicator is super sensitive as it can show empty when I park on the street just because the car is slightly tilted towards to right.

Thanks for the tip! Our garage floor is pretty level, but good to know about the sensitivity of the oil level indicator.

I believe what SantaBarbara was suggesting was to level the car before the oil change to make sure you get the most oil out. The car should be level when draining the oil. Also, Porsche now recommend 5W-50 for the 986/996 generation.@@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq

37 FT LBS ??? Looks like you have LN Engineering plug with magnetic pick up. I have the same one, and it says on top of it: 25 NM = 18 FT LBS. Just check it. If you over torque it, you will definitely strip it. The best way to check filter for debris is to cut it around with knife and thoroughly check for any debri. Always prefill filter housing with oil. Makes huge difference on dry start up. Mobil is Porsche recommended oil. Add some molly additive and change oil every 3K-5K miles. Good luck. Great car. Always use high tier detergents gas from good reputable companies like Exon or Mobil. Enjoy.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions! The plug is factory not magnetic so it’s 37 ft-lb, but if I ever get a magnetic plug I’ll now know to only torque to 18 ft-lb. It’s a great car and I love driving it.

Great job! I replaced my IMS bearing , tool cost more than the bearing! Very rewarding working on your own Porsche. Although I do miss my air cooled 911s They just would have a drip or two and occasionally smoke at start up....ahhh the good old days Cool channel

Thank you! Yes, it is rewarding doing my own work on the car. I anticipate that at some point I’ll probably replace the IMS bearing for peace of mind. Thanks for watching!

Nice video. Many references I see on changing oil in a Boxster state that the entire car should be lifted and on jack stands so it is level while the oil drains, to minimize retained old oil. Your thoughts on that?
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq 8 месяцев назад
It’s best practice to have the car level. I didn’t film it, but off camera I lowered the car to let it finish draining and then lifted it to complete the job. About 1/4 quart of additional oil drained.

I usually cut the old oil filter apart on the ends and "unwind" the filter media to get a really good look!

That’s a great idea! We actually did that off camera. Next time I’ll include that in the video.

Hi, great video! Gotta get the crank back on that Cannondale. But speaking of Porsches, is it advisable to break open the filter to check both sides? Am I correct that the IMS is located where detritus from its failure will not be captured by the filter before it's circulated through the engine? And that's why it's such a catastrophic issue?
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq
@AttainableLuxury-vv2xq 8 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yes, that Cannondale needs some attention…lol. I would recommend breaking open the filter and checking both sides. I did that off camera and no metal shavings were found. I think the inside face of the bearing is in contact with the engine oil, hence the potential for metal shavings. However, proactively replacing the IMS bearing is probably the way to go; which I plan to do in the spring.

Thanks for the reply. TBT, the bike that gets the most miles these days is my Brompton, which I love. Good weekend!
