Freshly recovered from COVID, I now have to get home from the Provence Alps and being me, I can't take the easier but longer motorway option to our stopover in the Black Forest spa town of Baden Baden, when a more direct route over 2 alpine summits (Col de Lombarde and Col du Grand St. Bernard) is shorter, toll free and undoubtedly will be memorable and perfect for a car like the 981 Boxster GTS.
500 miles isn't difficult to cover in one day in Europe on the often free flowing motorways, but doing it via 2 alpine passes is quite different as you will see (the bags under my eyes at the end confirm how tough its really been!).

Most of those mountain roads-passes are a lot more fun on a motorcycle. All together traveling on a bike is more involving really. Stay off the motorways and you’ll have a blast.

I used a Bip & Go toll tag when in Europe earlier this year and that works in France, Italy, Spain & Portugal. Worked really well.

Just found your channel. I own a 2015 GTS carmine red like yours except for several cosmetic “up” options, as my car was previously a Porsche North America Press Car. MotoMan has a couple of videos of my car from that period. The car is perfect! So glad to have the last N.A. engine before the 718. I am able to drive it on California roads like Angeles Crest and some amazing roads in the Central California Wine Region, but I am very jealous of your driving the alps. I drive the Santa Monica Mountain roads, but yours are much more picturesque and the tarmac much better maintained. One complaint: You sometimes have music over the incredible sound of this engine. I’m sure there are reasons, but as you know, at full song, this engine is orgasmic. Oh. And why do you have the top up when it isn’t raining? Nevertheless, when I come to Baden Baden this August, can I borrow your car? Cheers! And thanks.

Nice video, we are planning a trip to Austria via switzerland along the B500 in my 981 2.7. so will be driving on some of those roads too. I see you have sat nav in the car but are using Waze? is this for the live updates etc?

I’ve just returned from the uk bought myself a nice little z4 e85 3.0l to import into France for some Pyrenees mountain fun,good luck with your trip.

Petrol is actually cheaper in France now than the in the uk,Pyrenees are great much quieter than the alps.

Lol, back in the 80s took that road through the mountains in an old Non turbo’d diesel Nissan Bluebird, 4 up and fully laden. How it ever made it over I don’t know, must have been down to about 20bhp at the top. Definitely the slowest vehicle on the pass.

We went to the spa on the next day in Baden Baden, it was a warm day (30+) but it was still nice, everyone was hunting out the shade but we arrived at lunchtime so it was emptying out a bit. It's fun and it's also good for you and very well organised.

I'm impressed with the gearing as it appears to be 3000rpm @ 100 mph which makes for relaxed cruising and good mpg...

Indeed, it’s partly why I went PDK. Needs to be in 6th to get max acceleration on Autobahn but that’s no hardship
