Porsche snobs love to hate the original Cayenne generation, but they can't deny that the SUV saved their beloved company. With the high-spec Turbo and Turbo S versions, Porsche attempted to prove that a luxury SUV could provide a powerful yet comfortable ride for the family, plenty of utility with a 7,700-pound tow rating, and still retain the sporty driving dynamics that made Porsche famous.
The original Cayenne Turbo pumped 450 horsepower out of a twin-turbo 4.5L V8, while the Turbo S bumped boost higher to produce 520 hp. On top of the engine choices, the Cayenne could also be optioned with air-lift suspension, adjustable shocks, and even electronically disconnecting front and rear sways bars. But taking an expensive, complex luxury SUV off-roading seems a little crazy, especially 15 years later when known reliability issues start to get expensive. But depreciation has hit the Cayenne super hard, so watch HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle as he drives this attainable super SUV to test whether it's worth the potential headache of ownership.
