In the 6 months, I've had my pre-owned very clean black 981, I've had dozens and dozens of compliments already. My accord never got that kind of love. :(

@@chubz01 It hasn't missed a beat since I bought it. 100% faultless and still on original brake pads and battery. I use the car to pop to the shops or (pre Covid) drive to France, totally reliable....and fun!

@@lexden1 oh,man,that is so good to hear. Im actually in the market for one of these as my first faster sports car,and reliability is really important to me. I had a 2003 s2000 until recently,and that was flawless,honestly,and it was completely stock so it wasnt all thaaaat fast.But since Im such a Porsche fan boy 😅,I found myself looking for 991/997 911s,and the cayman..And I thiiink I found myself the perfect sports car,not gonna lie.

@@chubz01 I have owned 993's 996's and two 997's (not a 991 as I can't part with the Cayman!) and I must say, this car is the most fun and, arguably better looking. The dimensions are perfect for a 'sports car' as I think the new 911s - although impressive, are just a tad big. If you can live without the 'jump seats' the Cayman will not disappoint and prove to be a reliable, pretty fast car.

I've got a similarly optioned car. One thing to mention is that you can't stream bluetooth music from your phone to the radio unless you have the Nav option. There is a workaround, though. Just get an iTrip Bluetooth receiver and a short aux cable. You can install it in the glovebox in under 2 minutes and stream your music to the car via the Aux button. You can link your phone to the car if you have that option. Cosmetically, the 2014 model has round running lights and later models have a linear light. I prefer the round ones. Amazing car to DD and sounds much better than the 718 IMO.

I’ve had a 781 base for 2 years, Ive owned 5 BMW’s and 1 Benz E 320, the Cayman is the best car I have owned. It has the Porsche 3 ps, power, poise, and performance. Its all I need on US roads, now if I was back in Germany, I would definitely buy the S or GTS for the Autobahn

Well said William. Nothing beats a mid engine Porsche. Where do you live? handling makes more sense here in the Northeast than power because none of our roads are straight.

Just got one - 2014 with 21k miles. I'm definitely one who wanted the 981 for the engine. I considered a base Boxster, as that engine has plenty of zip, but found a Cayman S and, well, HAD to have it - lol. I haven't had the best start (PADM replacement - does Sports çhrono really make that much difference?), a delay in getting the part, and last night a flat tire (awaiting the replacement this afternoon). Some frustration having such an amazing car and having to sit and wait during great driving weather - AGH!!! Anyway, drop-dead gorgeous car (Basalt Black with apparently-rare, dark gray "Boxster S wheels" (per window sticker)). "Amber-orange" leather inserts and accents in dark gray interior looks really sharp - a hint of exoticness. All I can say is this is an incredible sports car - maybe the best available without going into supercar/exotic territory. I call this one my "baby Ferrari".

Great comment Bob. Congrats on the car. I got a flat tire in my Cayman S, left me stranded for a few hours... Sport Chrono makes a difference in the PDK cars. Launch control is only available on cars that have it. Enjoy your car. Plenty of good weather to come. More reliable than a Ferrari, that's for sure.

Nothing like a used car salesman doing a car review. Having said that, the 2014-15 981 S is one of my favorite cars. Don't care for the switch from the naturally aspirated 6 to the turbo 4 in the 718.

Not a well optioned car, which when bought new saved a ton of money as Porsche charges outrageous prices for most options. A well optioned car would at least have Sports Chrono , sport steering wheel, PDK which is outstanding and upgraded stereo. Rare options are sport exhaust, PASM (active suspension). Used prices are much more dependent on mileage than options and these are a fantastic value as they don’t really lose value anymore year over year, only as you add miles provided its well cared for. They are very reliable and for its performance is very easy on gas. It’s as fast as an E92 M3 but gets twice the gas mileage and has far fewer problems.

What makes the GT3 engines so special. There’s many things but there’s one single intangible thing you notice that stands above the rest. I think it must be a light flywheel making it rev so quickly that I’m noticing? Thoughts?

A great car with a great transmission price point is about the only hard point . I've always been a 911 guy but simply just don't have all the money to throw down on a 911.the car would look great in agate grey I think

What’s your feelings about the 718 Cayman with the 4 cyl turbo? They’re selling base versions for same price range used now? 300 hp with base 718.

I prefer the 981's due to the NA motor. By the 718's are faster and handle even better

actually if you have a very short commute, it's not the car for you for daily driving. You will kill the engine.

My 981s has the ecu remapped to 364hp, 420Nm 0-100km in 3.89sec, Exhaust bypass cutout gives the car a gt4 like sound and feel.... Won't be selling mine!

Considering getting a used boxster from the 2013 - 2016 years. Are these considered "981?" I can't tell from the listings. People have also been saying that they hold their value better than the 718. Why?

Great question. Yes 981 Boxster 2013-2016 is the 981. It holds value better than 718 because most, including myself, prefer the NA 6 cylinder engine over the terrible sounding 4 cylinder turbo

I’m looking for a replacement for my E46 M3. I’m looking at the M2, E92 M3, or this 981 Cayman S. Would you say the Cayman is the best choice for a fast sports car that I will take to the track and drive daily? (I don’t need back seats)

If you don’t need rear seats I wouldn’t look at cars with rear seats. I’d also look at S2000, Evora, Z4M though the last may feel too similar to your e46 though imho it’s a very different car. Maybe the new Miata too though I haven’t driven it.

Paul Definitely go for the Cayman S or the GTS if you can go that route. Just to note though, if you’re expecting an Uber blitzing fast car especially in a straight line, look elsewhere because it wasn’t built for that. It’s fast as heck in the twisties but many cars at 1/2 the price may outpace you in a straight line. Fair warning. I’ve seen many people buy these and say they regret it because they get mad when a challenger whizzes past them.

Difference price point but yes. A Cayman S like this is mid to high $40k's. My M2 has a trade in value of about $35k

The 981 is far superior to the 718 like a rabbit is to a rat, or even better the 718 is as real as Monopoly money. Car makers are bolting on turbos with massive bhp and torque to mask their lack of craftsmanship in the engine department.

CK ROY The 718 chassis is far superior to the 981 it’s plain and simple. Poor sound of the F4 and all the 718 GTS laps the Nurburgring the same time as the 981 GT4 @7:40. Everyone including me will choose the sound of the Flat 6 but to call the 981 superior to the 718 and lack of craftsmanship because it’s a 4 and sounds awful is a bit wrong. The whole package and what they were able to deliver with the 718 is pure engineering marvel. Porsche always did more with less and the 718 lapping the ring same as the GT4 is a staple of just that. Was it the right move to use a 4 cylinder....no. They could have used a detuned 991.2 3.0 and everyone would have been happy. But it is what is.

The 718 isn’t a bad car at all. I’ve driven one and it’s excellent. The only difference is the exhaust note. Better power and performance esp the torque boost low end. But of course it’s not cheap so I purchased a new Bullitt instead of a used Cayman. I may end up reading for a Cayman later on!
