This week on Tyrrell's Classic Workshop, join Iain as he delves into the storied lineage of the Porsche 968 Club Sport. From its humble beginnings with the VW-collaboration Porsche 914, through the evolutionary steps of the 924 and the esteemed 944, we arrive at the pinnacle of design and engineering - the 968 CS.
Iain Tyrrell lifts this automotive marvel onto the ramp, revealing the secrets of its revered handling capabilities, largely attributed to its ingeniously simple yet highly refined suspension system.
Dive deep into German car manufacturing's ethos of continuous improvement and how it contrasted with the British industry's penchant for new inventions. Iain's detailed explanation on the whiteboard brings the genius of the 968 CS's suspension to life, making complex engineering concepts accessible and engaging.
And of course, no exploration of this classic is complete without a road test. Experience the 968 Club Sport's prowess on the open road through Iain's expert lens, showcasing why this car remains a celebrated icon in Porsche's illustrious history.
For enthusiasts of classic cars and admirers of German engineering finesse, this episode is a testament to the Porsche 968 Club Sport's enduring legacy. Subscribe to our channel for more insights into the world of classic cars, and join us in preserving automotive history.

Ian, presenting a car video like this and describing the car's performance with "it doesn't set anyone's underwear on fire" without making a face is only possible for an Englishman. This is exactly why I appreciate your videos so much. Compliments on that.

It's always a pleasure to listen to Iain explaining how things work, regardless of whether I already knew it or not. The point about reinventing the wheel every time also applies to the Italian car industry. South of the Alps, we could definitely have used more of that patient, methodical refinement approach that has served the Germans so well.

A little over 10 years ago a mate purchased a white 968 CS in Sydney ( Australia )( RHD of course) and was very busy with his business at the time. Knowing I was on holidays at the time he asked me if I could fly there and drive the car back to Melbourne for him. I drove from Sydney to Canberra and from there headed up over the Snowy Mountains on the winding mountain roads and back to Melbourne. What a car. Completely in it's element. A trip I will never forget. When I arrived and my mate asked what I thought of the car. I told him it was like driving a full size go-kart.

After owning a 944S and 944S2 when I lived in the UK, a 968 is what I aspired to. Then I got fed up with the UK, left the country, and that was the end of my Porsche ownership days. I sold my 944S to the Porsche dealership in Colchester and the rep gave me a lift to Colchester train station in his 968 Club Sport. It was a fast car. There was also a 968 Sport which, I believe, was only produced for the UK market. Apparently, some customers thought that the Club Sport was too basic, so the Sport was a Club Sport with the addition of some 'luxury' features - power windows, etc. Looked down upon by 911 snobs, but the Porsche 4 cylinder transaxle cars are lovely to drive.

Great video! Sport and Clubsport variants are both excellent; well they’re both from the Clubsport line. This particular car is well known in 968 circles and is 1 of 306 special order Sports (Porsche GB ordered them) and not 1 of 179 C16 CS cars. Still a very rare car. Rather than bring snobbery though, the issue is that the market values Sports and CSs differently and if a car is being passed off as a 1 of 179 CS to up its perceived value, then that’s naughty and as ever, Caveat Emptor. The Lux pack is a misnomer. It wasn’t an option on the CS in the UK, though was in Europe. The Sport is the equivalent and because it came from the same production line, will doubtless have the Porsche certificate of authenticity that it has a CS VIN number, which it will. But it’s still a special order Sport.

As a passionate aircooled Porsche fan and owner, I will say the 968 CS is the one watercooled I would love to have. Its styling, the jettison of creature comforts, and the improved performance and handling seems like it would be such a fun car to drive.

Buy a 3.0 S2 944 a much better car the 968s suspension was way to hard, plus it comes with the turbo body and later cars come with a much prettier rear spoiler

I used to have a mark 1 Porsche 944 with targa roof in the color 'saphirblau metallic' with the pasha interior. It was such a good balanced car and even with it's stock 163 bhp engine it was fast enough. In my memories I can still hear the whistling sound of those balance shafts while revving up the engine. I regret that I sold it.

Another great video, Ian. Love the nerdy bits. I never knew that the counterbalance shafts canceled each other out at TDC. I had to put a water pump in my 84, 944 and it took me 10 hours due to the timing of all the sprockets being so crucial. Getting the timing belt tension correct was also crucial. I remember being a bit frustrated that it took me 10 hours, but I called the dealership and they said they charge eight hours for that job. So I guess I didn’t do too badly for my first try.

Thanks for your video Ian. It's worth knowing that it )the 924) started life as a VW group project. They got cold feet and sold it back to Porsche. They had to pay a licence fee per unit. In the USA it was called "Audi-Porsche 924". The balance shaft technology while invented by the gentleman stated was licensed from Mitsubishi who used it badged ad "Astron Silent Shaft" in their 1980s large 4 cylinder engines.

The first time i drove a 968CS was on the A6 over Shap Fell back in 1997. When that 3 litre 4 went onto the third cam stage at 5k, and it took off to the limiter at 6800, it was a revelation, and the handing. Loved it then, and I would love one again.

My very first car was a 968 convertible and i kept it for almost 15 years. Too bad maintenance was a pain, here in France. Most Porsche specialists knew too little about them, or didn't even want to work on them. Parts availability was also an issue.

Makes me miss my old 1985.5 944, I went through that car front to back and it drove and rode like new, even the shifter linkage was tight after I put some flat model helicopter bearings on the rod-to-lever pin. It was just so lovely and balanced. Never left me stranded, pretty nice to work on and would just keep accelerating because of the low drag. And it looked stunning on its larger polished aluminium 16 inch turbo teledials

My all time favourite road driving sports car is the original 944S, without the handling package. Perfect ride/handling balance. The engine is smoother and more fun than the later versions. But, with more feedback and lower limits then the sport suspension versions, you could drive it really hard on the road without fear of getting in too much trouble. Brilliant car.

When Iain digresses, I listen with awe. Departures into affiliated trivia enrich the monologue and enlarge the education. Not entirely happy with the "wheezy" slights on the 924 though, but I can have my cake and eat it- my NA 924 is a good daily driver and my two children both learned to drive in it. Paired with our 924 Turbo, it holds a place in my heart as my first classic and will be staying. The 968 destined to be like the 964 in my opinion.

Hi there. I had the pleasure of owning a 968 back in den mid nineties. Working close to the factory in Stuttgart , i saw these cars every day and my second Porsche was a 968 , factory car , fully equipped. The 968 CS was a version that was presented a bit later and to me it was a campaign to get more order intake and more cars on the road. The price of the 968 CS was much lower than a standard 968 and the interior looked really poor to me. All in all , the 968 is a wonderful car to drive. It has lots of space inside and enables to go on holiday with all luggage required. The engine is very powerful , even though only with 4 cylinder. Today you can find good cars for small money. 😀😀

I would add that if buying a 968, the standard is, apart from the M030 suspension (which to be honest is not the most comfortable) , mechanically the same. Same power, same torque. A tiny bit of extra weight and at least half the price.

The 968 is my favorite Porsche. For me the it is one of the best sports cars from the 90's. Not bad for something which evolved from the 924 which was a bit of an odd parts-bin concoction that had a very uncertain place within the larger Porsche/Audi/VW lineup, with a lot of confusion and to-ing and fro-ing over whose badge it would ultimately wear, eventually coming to be branded as a Porsche. Hardly an auspicious beginning to what would become a celebrated series of sports cars. But it has always been something of an underdog in Porsche history which is one of the reasons I personally find it so appealing.

I test drove a 968CS in the early 90's through Hamilton's Porsche in Melbourne (Australia) and it is simply the best handling car i've ever driven or been driven in. I actually had trouble keeping it in the LH lane as it's steering so accurate and so little steering input was required to turn the car. And no Porsche auto-blip. It was a real drivers car. I loved it and would happily buy a good example today if I was shopping in that price range. Apropos that, the 968CS is underloved like the 996.2 911's & are a great buy.

I quite agree with you Iain, I had a 968 back in the day and I really loved it. I thought back then that it was under rated and I still do. I sold it and bought another Porsche which in my opinion took all the driving pleasure of the 968 and upped it to another level ... yup, my original 987 Cayman 2.7 had the same attraction as my 968, only more so!

That’s my old car !! Had it for several years , about 2 years ago. It has a fantastic service history and file of work done , it was a bit of a mess when I got it, nice to see my clean engine bay is still shiny😂. I put it through a classic auction and despite the letter from Porsche and a few other bits of proof, the consensus was it actually isn’t a club sport !! It’s just a Sport lux, without a rear wiper, with elec widows and rear seats, it’s right on the change year. I replaced the stickers and rear badge and put black Ppf on the leading edges of the wings and sills to protect against stone chips . Loved that car, used it hard , it drove so well and never let me down. Polished it to death , if I remember right the paint is a bit thin on the front passenger wing and under the door handle . I has the worlds largest 4 cylinder production engine , it’s a 3ltr . Lovely to see it again , gone some great pics of it somewhere . Sorry to say it’s not a true Club Sport , but no one really knows, enjoy it
