We bought this 996 Porsche 911 earlier this year from a scrapyard for just £5000. It was badly burnt inside and needed a lot of new wiring to get it running again. We were gearing up to take it on track for its final episode, but the day before the shoot, the car’s gearbox started to make a horrible noise, so we abandoned it. Today, we’re going to try and figure out what’s actually wrong with this car, how much it’ll cost to fix and decide what we should do with it.

Expensive Solution: Get a new transmission or rebuild current one. Cheap Solution: Skip 3rd and 6th gears when driving.

My 996 made the same noises about 6 months after I bought it. I took it to a specialist and they took it apart, finding out it had lunched 4 teeth off the 3rd gear sprocket. They replaced it, put fresh fluid in and put it all back together and the whole thing was £1100. I have a lovely 3rd gear paperweight on my desk, too. It could be far less catastrophic than you think! Edit: to add that White Bear Garage in Adlington did the work!

I would like to help you to bring back to life your 996. We have in France near Lyon a well-known Porsche specialist who repairs and sells over 100 PORSCHE refurbished gearboxes a year. New bearings, seals and synchros. All sprockets are checked and replaced if necessary. Right know he has for sale a 996 98-01 gearbox around 2k5. As my previous comments seemed not to appear, the workshop is in Sérézin-du-Rhône. Maybe a phone call could help. Fingers crossed. I can not wait to see it back on the road!! My 964 gearbox rebuild cost about £2.5k in labour. Porsche parts were obviously a lot more than that…..

It's pretty normal to need a hydraulic press to take apart the gear assemblies. A hydraulic press is far from exotic and shoul dbe a part of any good home garage. I've replaced a syncro at home on my van for example. I needed a press to take the layshaft apart and put it back together afterwards.

I got a but bummed out when you said you sold it but was glad to see it was just sold from company to yourself in order to fix it over time and semi-properly. I can say I wouldn't have gotten bored of it, I know cars can take a while to bring back but it is understandable to have to change content since a lot people will get bored.

V8 LS it swap either from Corvette, Camaro or Cadillac CTS. This way you resolve the transmission and the engine knock. Loads of content as well. Good luck!

to be honest 9300 pounds for a new gearbox from Porsche sounds actually not too bad, I expected much worse. Removing the gearbox and putting it back in should be a manageable task , that you can do yourself.

There is some truth in that, but it only seems reasonable, because you don't have to pay it :D . But really, this 9-12k cost renders almost any car it fits uneconomical to repair. I assume, if you didn't want the lsd you would get a better quote. Also since they would pay you 3700 pounds for your old gearbox, I assume the 'new' box, would only be a Porsche rebuilt one

That Porsche gearbox ~10k and 400£ for each gear sounds really cheap. Like Renault cheap. However nobody buys a mainstream car a new gearbox or new gears when u get a slightly used Renault/Nissan gearbox for 200£

It's what I do. My 'Shitbox' 2007 Grande Punto 1.2 has a grindy gear change up from 2nd to 3rd, so, I tend to skip it, but, IF I REALLY NNED IT, I have to push clutch in, wait for revs to drop to idle, THEN snick the gear knob into 3rd 🤣🤣🤣 (and yeah, I've fully changed G/box oil a good 3 times in a 6 month period to help flush out the old to ensure a fully clean/new oil is in there) 😎🇬🇧

re. what Hammond was saying about TDC buying the worst cars that are only available because no one else is stupid enough to buy them... and how that's apparently a big no-no.. I rather disagree (as long as they're not actually dangerous and genuinely unsafe to drive). We've all been tempted by a 10-owner, poorly maintained, knackered old banger with 8-months' MOT and a bodykit, and I think it's a valuable service to those of us who might otherwise make the mistake of actually buying one ourselves. It's nice to see what these sorts of cars are like but without having to waste actual money myself. Nice one.

I think you can use a 997 gearbox. The selector is on the other side, so you need the 997 shifter cables too. 997 gearboxes are cheaper than 996. Before you do that, have the gearbox stripped down and see whats broken. Don't be buying bearings from Porsche unless you have to. The gearbox is easy to remove, I did it on my drive on axle stands.

Hey I thought that Edwin and Will where going too a scarp yard and find a gear box for the Porsche 911 sitting in an damaged Porsche 911 they would probably charged you about £1000 or something and it's great that Edwin is going too keep it and use it every day.

Done tons of motorcycle engine rebuilds. Generally your paying brand tax if you know the dimensions of them its a £100 at most. I rebuilt a fzr600r engine recently oem parts would have cost close to 3k went down the after market parts and found the exact same bearing from the same manufacturer for £2.89 oem was £72.13. in the end i paid just over 2k as it needed new gearsets shift forks shift rods selector shaft gear drum ect but basicly had a brand new engine 30 year old engine. My tip is measure the bearings and go to a bearing supplier. The is 2 near me 1st is derby bearings and the is another in chesterfield

Shame you guys are in the UK. I used to work for Flying Lizard Motorsport when we were a privateer and when we became the factory team. We had so many spare parts for the 996. There was even a guy that would come to the track that would only rebuild, regear Porsche transmissions and differentials.
