Very useful if you have an old bottle of wine and the cork won't survive being opened normally, only downside is you can't seal the bottle, so down it

why is downing a bottle of port a downside?

The last thing you want to do is waste the experience by just "downing it" like so much swill! Decanted vintage port lasts a few days in the refrigerator in a container with a lid. With such an expensive price tag, and the exquisite flavors of vintage, it deserves to be savored.

@@ThundermansThunder okay rich boy, when you buy the expensive wine, you can decide whether I down it like a cheap can of beer at a college party

Looks fun! Definitely a good way to avoid disintegrated cork!

Yes, as mentioned when you have a really really old bottle of wine the cork may break apart and fall into the wine, why they use the port tongs.

It’s pretty cool to use port tongs especially for old bottles of port where the cork would disintegrate if you tried to corkscrew it. But dang I don’t like the taste lol😂

Why would you break glass when you can use a corkscrew😳😱⁉️

Traditionally it was used for old port bottles where the cork was quite fragile and couldn’t be extracted with a corkscrew

port is a very mature wine so itll be coz of the cork getting old. i assume you could do it on most if not all bottles though

I have never seen this method done before. I would much rather use a corkscrew 🤔😄
@AmandamccrossinSOMMVIVANT

This is used mostly for older bottles where the cork is more fragile and there’s risk of breaking
