Not to shabby. My Grandpa was Auto Mechanic and he made one for his boat house. Same idea but used lake water. Dam nice boat house too. He used a couple of radiators with a closed loop system. It would even warm the place up on the cold autumn nights when the water was warmer than the air. Nice job!

good job Bobby. you forgot the air intake. did you notice the fan speed increase when you opened the lid? you'll burn out the fan motor creating a vacuum. Another point no one mentioned, you're putting humidity into the room and you will get mould on everything and it'll grow. not good. these swamp coolers are designed for low humidity levels..... around 20% to 35%

Later that day I added an intake to the side of the cooler. I used a dryer vent with the flaps turned to the inside of the cooler.

@ziggy162 Inside a car is a very small volume of air. It wouldn't take long to cool it down. If you noticed he barely had any ice in it when he tested it. Look at how much ice he put in and and it's surprising that still cooled that much before the ice melted.
@RandyMabusedJW

Some people have the air intake going across the coil so that when it hits the ice it’s nit hot air. Then they have a output somewhere on top, some even having another small coil across the output.
@BobbyMunroe
@BobbyMunroe 12 лет назад
For the air intake I cut a hole in the end just under the handle and added a dryer vent with the flaps on the inside. This allows the air to flow into the cooler and out through the fan. For the wiring, I wired the fan and the pump parallel to the cigarette lighter plug and added a toggle switch to kill the power.

Heater cores are designed to work at high heat. There is little benefit at ambient temps. What may work better is to sink the core in the ice water and draw the air thru it. So far most posters have chosen to draw water through the core when the air temperature is not that low. Past air through the court instead well it is submerged in ice water. Then you will get very cold air out of it.

I'll go you one better. Why don't you just fill the heater core with water and freeze it. Then stick it to the front of a fan.

FirstName LastName This set up is basically the set up for the Sporty's Arctic Air Portable AC for small planes that cost $500-600. The Sporty's model doesn't submerge the the heat exchanger.

AtomicCortex Good Idea but wouldn't condensation build up inside the heater core?

I ended up putting a dryer vent (turned backwards) on the side under the handle. Keeps the cold air in when off, and let's air in when on.

would last a lot longer with large blocks of ice or freezing milk jugs or laundry detergent bottles

you need to cut a hole for the air to go in so the fan can run fine. not act like a vacuum. but i like it. 5/5
@fekyocouch
@fekyocouch 11 лет назад
i want that in my camaro, i cant run ac in the car in the summer because it will overheat that looks like it would make a car cool down pretty quick! maybe make it smaller with a motorcycle radiator and fan and put it in a smaller vessel so it can fit in smaller cars as well hmm
@ace66756
@ace66756 8 лет назад
If you cut your air inlet, and install a pipe or some kid of duct material and have it stop just an inch from the bottom fo the cooler. The air temperature will drop as it is coming to the surface, and will drop once more when it passes through the heat exchanger. And after I wrote this I see Firstname Lastname's comment, basicly the same. However my method will get colder since its getting cooled twice

Its a heater core from a Chevy S-10. About $20.

Take a ice cube maker refit it to supper cool water. Take an igloo put a fountain pump and cold sink in it. Take a GOOD fan and flatten the copper coil to increase thermal transfer to be used on the front of the fan leave a capillary at the back of the fan to help cool the fan motor on the return flow. Make a split system put everything in two igloos you can stack! Emergency colling system! Novartis!
@BobbyMunroe
@BobbyMunroe 7 лет назад
That would require more than 12 volts DC to operate.

@jimmartin7899
@jimmartin7899 7 лет назад
A mini Stirling cryogenic cooler to turn air into liquid would be better but then you would need to thread a niddle to makes her icy more insect use is always good.
@jimmartin7899
@jimmartin7899 7 лет назад
Turn air to liquid to fill a tank with a bell siphon that fills a radiator that boils off during heat exchange from fan forcing air through radiator with vapor flowing back into tank with cryogenic cooler to turn back into liquid to start cycle all over again. 30 watts for the fan and 30 watts for the cryogenic cooler.

It depends on how hot and humid it is where you are using it.

OK, so lots of questions. First....the heater core does not allow air to pass through it right? So what good does running cold water through a core at the top of the cooler do when hot air is being drawn into the cooler somewhere else? IF the core allowed enough air to circulate through it the cold water circulating through it would be chilled....but seems to me pointless to then cut an intake somewhere else. I am working on a design and liked this, but nowhere can I find how air restrictive a heater core is. There has to be a way to pass the intake OR exiting air through the heater core or it is useless....my idea is using wicking filter material from a humidifier....if you take a round one and cut it you have one piece that is 5-6 inches wide by about 12 inches long and they are a full inch thick. If you position one of these at both the intake and exhaust opening in a manner that allows them contact with the iced water in cooler, they wick this cold water up and all air coming in, circulating, then exiting passes through them and is chilled....no water pump needed....unless, what I may add is panel of evap pad between intake and exit that aquarium pump continually wets......and enters through cold wet filter, passes through cold wet evap pad, then exits through cold, wet filter.......gotta bring temp exiting down considerably. I just like this radiator circulating cold water and want to find way to force air directly through it as it enters and exits. Am looking at duct fans too....4-5.00, can be DC and if used at entrance, and exits would provide constant pressure. thoughts?
@BobbyMunroe
@BobbyMunroe 7 лет назад
Air does pass through the heater core. After I made this video, I added a dryer vent to the side of the cooler to allow the air to be drawn into the cooler, through the heater core , and sucked out of the top with the fan. What you have described is a "swamp cooler" or "evaporator cooler" and only works good when the humidity is low.

Hello sir, COOL project 👍! Tip, if you're interested, you can add a peltier thermoelectric cooling kit. See how that works. I believe the results would go way down below 60°. Check out the youtube videos on that. That plus your creation would be AWESOME! I'm looking to make one myself, just have to round up the funds hahaa.. Thank you for posting this video! Keep up the Great work.

what if you live in the desert and your average temp is like 120 mid july ? wouldnt the water be hot and the fan take forever to cool down anything?

Lol if you watch the temp at the end it is climbing up quickly. I'm sure this thing works, but it didn't drop the temp 20 degrees in 10 minutes. I bet he put the thermometer in the ice

Rye Gold integrate a solar panel and or rechargeble motorcycle battery instead of using your car battery. Also if interested get a computer fan or two. Happy modding :)

To Comfytees: I wanted it to be an "all-in-one" unit. To Jetwowairforce: The ice would probably last longer without the eveporator core.

What do you mean exactly. Can you put a fresh video up to show this change in design. Also how would the bilge pump and the fan both be connected to the same 12v socket? Is it simply a case of wiring them together?
